Red Sox Place Dustin Pedroia On 10-Day DL

By Jeff Todd | August 1, 2017 at 2:50pm CDT

The Red Sox have placed second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day DL with knee inflammation, per a club announcement. His roster spot will go to just-acquired righty Addison Reed.

Boston had been waiting for Pedroia to be seen by a specialist today, and evidently the result coming out of his check-up was to allow more time for rest. The same joint was operated on last fall, so the club will surely exercise some added caution.

That said, there’s no indication at the moment that there’s any reason for broader concern. Pedroia is still a productive player as he closes in on his 34th birthday, having recorded a .307/.381/.411 batting line with quality defensive metrics through his 85 games this year, though for the second straight year he has rated among the game’s worst baserunners.

Fortunately for the Sox, the team’s pre-deadline addition of Eduardo Nunez and promotion of Rafael Devers will allow the club to fill the void without much issue. The former has slotted in at second in Pedroia’s place over the past three games, while the latter is off to an impressive start through his first six games in the majors.

Once again.. Thanks to that hack Machado and that filthy take out slide he put on Pedroia when he intentionally over slid the bad with no penalty on him and Pedroia’s surgically knee has given him fits since, yet i recall fans everywhere screaming at Barnes the next day for throwing a pitch high and tight at machado to let him know his illegal slide won’t happen again with Boston with impunity.

That’s ok we’ll welcome Manny to the Bronx next offseason and he can takeout Pedroia in pinstripes all of 2019. If Pedroia is still playing that is!

Please dude. Whether or not the slide is cause for whatever knee issues Pedroia is going through, that slide was not intentional. Your ballclub has attitude problems and is full of jerkoffs. Pedroia is the only classy dude on that team; you got bigger problems to worry about.

Keep the name calling to the playground. Watch that slide again.. not meant to injure I’m sure but it was an illegal take out slide. The subsequent accident is the reason for the rule.

What an idiot thing to say maybe the stupidest comment I have seen. The Red Sox are full of guys that are good guys let’s see say something bad about Bogey, Betts, JBJ, AB, Moreland, Sale the list goes on they are ass classy as anyone in baseball those guys I can only assume you mean Price and Hanram but saying full of bad guys just complete idiocy.

Bruin, if you dont like my opinion, tough stuff. Calling somebody a jerkoff is hardly an insult. The reason a I made that comment is because the whole team was behind Price’s harrassment of Dennis Eckersley. They all clapped andbit even continued multiple times. Your manager said theg would not apologize. Theyre the ones that lack class. So I stick by comment.

          Hey Bruin1012,
Say what you want about that comment from Bronxbomber7, but don’t cast all Yankee fans as classless or your going to hear a storm coming your way.
Frankly, both teams have had their moments regarding class….Ortiz was something of an ass when he didn’t get the calls at the plate…Manny was the King of Jerks, Varitek picking a fight with A-Rod…guess who’s laughing now with J-Low on his arm and the king of the classless acts…..saluting the all time saves leader upon his retirement at Fenway, you remember Mariano, with a video salute of all his failures. Real Classy Bosox!

Honestly Rocky I was just referring to him you and I have had spirited disagreements and I’m not referring to you if I came across as all Yankee fans that’s not true there are plenty of classy Yankee fans in this site but what bronxbomber7 said was ridiculous.

Okay Bruin1012…we’re very cool, and appreciate your clarification.
I agree with you, not sure where his comments came from….no need to start throwing darts at who’s classier….or who meant do to what.
A second baseman with a guy that size is defenseless and I understand why you and Boston fans feel the way you do. You’re protecting your guy which is what it is all about.

There’s no respect within Boston fans’ ranks. If there were they would not be spewing their typical anger, rather they would respect Pedroia’s classy reaction.

They will miss Petie more than his baseball contributions. As he focuses on rehab he will not be around to keep the malcontents in check. Mr. “my shoulder hurts too much to play 1b” will further alienate the clubhouse, which John Farrell has not had any control of the year. Hence he also disrespected Petie’s wishes by prolonging the controversy over many games to show that he has bravado.

I still say it’s the “curse of 10 Day DL” Pedroia is iron man as they come. Maybe this ‘knee inflammation’ isn’t serious enough to commit to the 15 day DL until after the specialist’s visit. Dustin Pedoia is the heart and soul of this team.

I realize that. The point of my post was I miss the 15 day DL, because you really had to think before really commiting to the full 15 days.

I’m guessing Sox would’ve hesitated to put Pedroia on the now defunct 15 day DL, until he gets checked out by that specialist, Muchad slide and Addison Reed trade notwithstanding.

I can see how you made that mistake tho, i apologize.

Machado is a dirty player and a well-known crybaby. If he played for Boston, the Yankees, L.A.,, Philly, etc., he would be crucified by the media.

You can’t understand sarcasm thru the internet and Im giving you the benefit of the doubt that was a very poor attempt at being sarcastic, in poor taste.

Never wish injury unto others., I don’t care if it’s David Ortiz to Dustin Pedroia who is, in fact “Derek Jeter” of his team.

It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to compare, the ageless wonder who continues to produce, former MVP, clubhouse leader and 2x champ Dustin Pedroia to Derek Jeter; Derek eter isn’t above Pedroia, and the 2 mean as much to their teams as each other. Stop sounding entitled. Jeter means more to the game of than you realize. He played the game right accomplished many things like Dustin Pedroia

Wtf are you talking about? Nowhere have I commented on wanting him hurt. What I said was “if he’s still playing Machado can take him out”! Players have been doing that and will continue, either intentionally or unintentionally. Pedroia is no where near the class of Jeter either as a player or a leader. He gets interviewed when times are tough and comes off both arrogant and short..something by the way Jete never did. Go YouTube a few of Pedroias locker interviews, such about Price disrespecting Ech..

I wouldn’t ever go that far….Pedroia is a good little player that is the voice of his team, but Jeter was an ALL TIME GREAT first ballot Hall of Fame.
This really is not a good comparison.

By “takeout” I assumed you meant literally slide into and take him out. That’s dirty man. It ends careers.. I hate when fans do that.. Take injury out of it..

But it wasn’t just you and wasn’t fair to single you out, especially someone I think with good post history (not random troll)

I know you didn’t wish injury and it’s all part of the game. (hard slide)

Remember Nick Swisher? One of the Classiest guy in baseball. His slide essentially ended Tsuyoshi Nishioka’s career. It was 100% legal, and there was nothing milicious.

That was where I was coming from and I’m sorry for thinking you wished injury on Pedroia.

Hey the take out slides , moving the catcher out of the base line of home plate is just ruining baseball period…baseball players are just being a bunch of crybabies if they get hit…but hey that’s baseball. No more lobbing balls to home plate for intentional walks just point to the bag and move on? And now they want to put a runner on 2nd for extra innings…baseball is becoming a joke, play the game as it is and stop changing rules because someone can’t watch the full game and ball players can’t take the hit on base paths.
