Padres Designate Kevin Quackenbush, Select Jordan Lyles

By Jeff Todd | September 1, 2017 at 4:17pm CDT

The Padres have designated righty Kevin Quackenbush for assignment and outrighted lefty Dillon Overton, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports on Twitter. Those moves help clear the way for a variety of September call-ups.

San Diego has selected the contract of right-hander Jordan Lyles and activated shortstop Erick Aybar from the DL. The club also added lefty Kyle McGrath and righty Jose Valdez to the active roster.

Quackenbush has never quite replicated the success he found in his debut season of 2014 and struggled to a 7.86 ERA over 26 1/3 major-league frames this year. Lyles was also effective in ’14 as a starter for the Rockies, but has steadily declined ever since and washed out of the Colorado bullpen earlier this year.

Quackenbush is one of my favorite MLB player names.

I think he was the longest tenured Padre on the 40 man roster. When Alexi Amarista signed with the Rockies in the offseason Quackenbush became the longest tenured Padre. So long Quack! Wasn’t that long ago when a lot of people thought he would be the closer of the future.

It was (and still is) Robbie Erlin actually. I wonder how his recovery from TJS is going. At the start of the season they said they expected him back around the All Star Break. He is actually arb eligible this offseason so I’d bet against him staying on the 40 much longer tho.

Torres? Yeah I doubt he will be the closer next year. I think Maton is the favorite, with the front office hoping Capps can put it back together and get close to his pre- TJ form to also throw him in the running. I think Yates would also get a nod before Torres imo. All speculative and leaning on the fact we are assuming that Hand is traded in the offseason. Because if he isn’t he is obviously the closer in 18′

Robbie Erlin, wow totally lost track of him. Out of sight and out of mind. With that being said I give more credit to Quack now because even with his constant shuttling back and for from El Paso, he was atleast serviceable and provided innings when we have needed them. Erlin on the other hand has been hurt or very mediocre. So much to show for the last of the Mike Adams trade.

Never lived up to his talent. Shame. Always thought he’d be the closer, but can’t wait to see torres be the closer next year.

At least he probably racked up a bunch of frequent flyer miles with all his trips between San Diego and El Paso.

U can’t be an effective closer with one pitch: 90 mph straight fastball! I liked quack ‘s guts: I am going to throw this ball as hard as I can to see how far U can hit it. Maton is scary as a middle reliever much less as the closer! He doesn’t just get hit, he gets bombed. Without Hand, we have no closer. Hopefully Another Jackass Preller knows this and keeps Hand. The Pesky Padres are actually leading in the ninth inning more frequently. Got the freakin Dodgers twice yesterday! Myers, SS, closer w/o Hand are 3 biggest holes. Myers so dumb, he couldn’t apply Zinter’s techniques….so they fired the hitting instructor. Meanwhile Hedges praises the guy. Myers is mediocre….not the face of the franchise….not if we want to win!

Myers is dumb and Renfroe is stubborn….not sure a new hitting instructor can fix this. Guaranteed contracts are stupid! Myers got way too much with a promise to do better. His defense and base running are suspect. He is an outfielder! Put him in LF, bring back Adrian for his last few years and hop Naylor develops @ 1B.
