J.D. Martinez Rumors: Wednesday

By Jeff Todd | December 13, 2017 at 9:57am CDT

We haven’t heard an immense amount of chatter to this point on J.D. Martinez, the top free agent slugger, but that could well change today. The power-hitting outfielder is set to appear at the Winter Meetings to sit down with a few possible suitors, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported (via Twitter) yesterday. Here’s the latest chatter:

  • We learned yesterday that the Red Sox will get face-to-face time with Martinez and agent Scott Boras, as Jon Heyman of Fan Rag tweeted. Indeed, it seems that Martinez is a top priority for Boston, though adding him would presumably mean finding a deal for center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr.
  • The Diamondbacks are also slated to meet with Martinez, who starred there after a midseason trade, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). Whether the Arizona organization can find the cash to make that happen remains to be seen, but it does seem the club’s discussion of Zack Greinke in trades is likely related.
  • While the Giants are also a rumored suitor, though GM Bobby Evans would say only that the team will “maybe” be among those meeting with Martinez, as Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic tweeted yesterday. As Baggarly further explains, though, in a subscription piece, there are ongoing concerns internally that blowing past the luxury line would not be wise. Certainly, there’s no clear path to adding Martinez (or any other high-priced free agents) without doing so.

With Stanton & Judge in New York, and the A’s not listening to offers on Khris Davis, it looks like Boston is trying hard to solve the power issue. I’d expect them to be looking at Joey Gallo, Nelson Cruz, and Justin Smoak, as well. Maybe Moustakas too.

Yea that’d be to balance salaries which is why they would add prospect but given greinkes age contract and declining stuff this doesn’t jive with what NYY is trying to do

Red Sox sign JD and trade JBJ for Greinke. free up money for AZ and they get a great Outfielder for very little money. They might have to throw in another prospect with JBJ, but it would be a win win for both teams.

Red Sox need to sign JD, and sing mustaka to third base devers to first. Mustaka is great hitter and cheap, and JBJ trade for reliever

Keep JBJ. Martinez is not a good defender. Put Hanley at first (or trade him for next to nothing) and DH Martinez. Centerfield is a more important defensive position than first

That works too. I think Hanley is going to have a great year now his shoulder is fixed. I do expect JBJ to rebound, but he needs to do it for an entire year, and not just the beginning. I love JBJ, but we need more pop in the lineup.

Alex Cora has some great ideas, some are to change the offensive thinking to not run the counts up so much and swing at pitches in the strike zone early in the count.
Guess time will tell how well that works.

No, we don’t. We won 93 games without it. I don’t understand why everyone is crapping bricks over the Red Sox supposedly needing to spend all this money.

the sox already suffered through one overrated jd in boston… don’t do it. he will be looking for too many years at too many dollars. bring in hosmer or moustakas (devers to 1b).

people losing their mind about boston lacking power… betts and boagarts had wrist issues that sapped power plus betts, bogarts, bennintendi and devers are all under 25 and still developing. pitching and defense still win games.

Hosmer is the most overrated player in baseball and he is not worth even half of the 200 million that Boras wants. Get Carlos Santana, let a dumber team sign Hosmer

It’s funny how you say pitching and defense still win games when the Houston Astros won the World Series this year with hitting, bad defense, and not one of the better pitching staffs

I agree, JD is not a fit for Boston, as he hits to the opposite field, and the Green Monster wouldn’t benefit him.
Hosmer is meant for Fenway, in using the green monster to his benefit.
I would sign a SP for Depth (I would like to see Lynn signed) he is very undervalued

Let JD sit on the shelf for a while and maybe he’ll get the idea, what they’re asking for is ridiculous. If anyone gives him the money it will be Chris Davis all over again.

It would be nice if JD was cool with just being a DH. Then you keep the OF intact and try Hanley at 1st. Then maybe sign Moreland/Napoli or someone on the cheaper side of things to platoon with Hanley a bit or fill in when he gets hurt. Or trade Hanley and spend stupid money on JD/Hosmer. I know Jackie’s bat has been inconsistent but I think we will regret losing him to make room for JD.

I am wondering if DD is asking him if he thinks he can play 1st base and if he would be willing to try that. If he is and would be willing on the footwork and what’s required at first base then two problems solved. Hopefully they can work that out and keep JBJ would hate to break up the best outfield defense in baseball, arguably.

Red Sox Sign JD Martinez, (although I would them to prefer to sign Hosmer) and trade JDJ for Wil Myers to play 1B.
Sign Lynn SP and should be good

    another idea:

Sign Hosmer, who hits .573 in fenway. Sign Santana for DH, trade Hanley for a prospect to rebuild farm system, maybe SF Giants for SP -T.Beede ??

In what world would the Giants want a defensive liability to add to their existing poor 2017 defense? Giving up one of the very few prospects they have for an aging defensive liability who’s offensive production will only get worse is a bad idea.

The Giants have previously been linked to both Hamilton and JBJ- exceptional defensive players well suited for AT&T Park. Hanley just isn’t the type of player they’d want.
