East Notes: Nationals, Red Sox, Starlin

By Kyle Downing | January 6, 2018 at 11:54am CDT

Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post wonders if the Nationals will end up paying up for a Scott Boras client, as they often do late in the offseason. In recent winters, owner Ted Lerner approved deals for players like Rafael Soriano, Max Scherzer and Matt Wieters after the calendar flipped to the new year, and there’s certainly a possibility it could happen again. Janes lists reliever Greg Holland, outfielder J.D. Martinez and starter Jake Arrieta as Boras clients who make sense for the club’s roster as it’s currently constructed. The Nationals have a history of doing business with Boras late in the year, or as Janes puts it, “When big-name Boras clients linger into the new year, the Nationals linger, too, as potential suitors, regardless of whether they have an obvious need.”

Elsewhere along the East Coast…

  • Unlike the Nats, the Red Sox rarely make late splashes in the free agent market. Jen McCaffrey of masslive.com posits that this year might be different. Boston is still in need of an upgrade to their offense, and J.D. Martinez remains on the market. Though the only significant late-winter deals the club made in the past decade were one-year pacts with Mike Napoli and Adrian Beltre, the Red Sox are probably facing pressure from their fan base to improve an offense that finished dead last in the American League with 168 home runs and third to last with a 92 wRC+. Other big hitters still on the market include the likes of Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas, though neither seem like particularly good fits for Boston.
  • Though new Marlins second baseman Starlin Castro is generating some trade interest, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com believes he’s likely to stay put. Gary Denbo, the Marlins’ VP of player development and scouting, says that  Castro “has the ability to hit for average, and for a second baseman, he does provide power for that position.” Denbo also says he hopes that the second baseman can be a steady defender in the middle of the field. Since coming to Miami in the blockbuster Giancarlo Stanton trade, speculation has swirled around Castro as a potential trade candidate. I recently noted that the 27-year-old perhaps has some surplus value in his contract, which has two years and $22MM in guarantees remaining. His .300/.338/.454 battling line with the Yankees last year is solid, but his defense up the middle detracts a bit from his value.

Interesting – I really can’t ever remember the Red Sox making a big signing in January. Even a big trade?

2017 – Sale, Moreland, Thornburg all December
2016 – Price, Kimbre, Young were both December / November
2015 – Hanley and Pablo were both December
    2014 – AJ was December
2013 – Victorino, Napoli, Gomes, almost everyone was December. The only one of their 9 free agent signings / trades that came after December was Stephen Drew
2011 – Agon and Crawford were December

I guess that tells us the Red Sox fans are in very unfamiliar territory here – the team usually get what they want right away as long as they target it aggressively. Not sure how this compares to other big market teams

December isn’t late… also, good job using the Sale/Moreland/Thornburg trio when they were all traded for/signed at the winter meetings. Price signed on December 4th of 2015. Are you telling me that’s late?

Hey Estavao, I guess your one of those fans who subscribed to an opinion that “all of the hitters had off years”, right.

The reality is that all of those hitters were missing protection from a big bat in the lineup.

So Trader Dave’s now being late is curious. Wondering if the back story develops where John Henry has pulled back on Dave’s piggy bank and so he has no money to spend to attract a top talent like JD.

Interesting – the only other Red Sox January signing I can add is Stephen Drew leading into 2013. Sale, Thornburg, Moreland, Price, Kimbrel, Young, Hanley, Pablo, AJ, Crawford, Agon and everyone else in that 2012/2013 offseason was December or earlier. Red Sox fans are in uncharted territory here! By now their team has always gotten ‘they guy’ or all but declared themselves out of the bidding for elite talent.

So this is what it feels like to be a nationals fan…

This is an historic offseason in regards to how dead slow the market is. I’m thinking the GMs got together and made a pact that they’re gonna stop with crazy long deals players have gotten. Or they didn’t but most have the same thoughts on it. I think the majority of the big FA deals end up being a bust.

I think GM’s are realizing free agents are for the most part a bad deal, and long term free agents are out unless your name is Trout, Harper, Bryant,, Stanton, or Machado. GM’s would rather trade for their needs, it’s a better deal.

I agree. I think they’re all familiar with the aging curve now,

        cdn.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2013/12…

and while I think they’re willing to pay for a couple of substandard years at the end of a contract, what agents may be asking for are deals so long that the last 3 – 5 years are perceived by the younger, analytical minds in MLB front offices as being a losing proposition.

I’d rather see the Red Sox get creative and swing a deal for Adam Duvall, Domingo Santana, Khris Davis, Ozuna (when they had a chance) or something along those lines. Martinez will not be worth the money.

I also wish they had a second baseman and a catcher who could hit, but a boy can dream…….

Bour would not net a top 100 prospect imo. I mean Alonso just got peanuts in FA and guys like Morrison and Frazier are FAs that will come at reasonable prices and not cost a team one of their top 3-5 prospects.

The Giancarlo trade was a fix from the beginning.. He was ALWAYS going to be traded to the Yankees, backroom deal that was done months before the trade… And the red Sox don’t need, nor should they get JD he’s not worth the money or years it would take to get him.. Stand pat and take a shot next year at some real impact players.

So where’s your evidence? We have evidence that you’re wrong however:

      1. Stanton was only willing to go to 4 teams.
      2. 2 of those teams weren’t interested.
      3. The remaining 2 were NYY and LAD and LA wanted Miami to take on bad contracts.
      4. Stop looking for conspiracies when there aren’t any as you just look stupid.

Yeah. I’ve been comparing the Stanton trade to when the Twins traded Johan Santana to the Mets. Santana want to only go to one of three teams. The Red Sox and the yankees refused to give the Twins anyone they really wanted and the Mets gave up a little bit more. So in the end Santana was traded to the Mets for very little.

The Marlins hands were tied on the trade so they took the best they could get.

IIRC, the Santana trade was different in that he was a pending FA. Stanton has a long-term deal if he choses not to opt out.

Correct but the clear plan for the Marlins seems to be appears to be a restart. They weren’t getting the job done with Stanton and they didn”t look like they were getting better. So two options, throw good money after bad or lighten the load to see where the team is in 2 years.

Since this is the last year Bryce Harper and possibly Daniel Murphy, Gio Gonzalez, and Ryan Madson will suit up a National, they need to go all in to try and win a world series before they become post season hopefuls or worse.

Marlins and Nationals can help each other out in many ways and extend the Nationals window as world series contender.

Miami gets Robles, Soto, Kieboom, Romero, Raquet

Nationals get Yelich, Realmuto, and Barraclough.

Yelich at center, eaton in lf, harper in rf and yelich takes over rf for 4 years once harper leaves.

    Realmuto upgrades catcher

    Barraclough upgrades the bullpen

In the next 3 years, when realmuto is a fa, the nationals will have rebuilt their farm through the draft and ifa.

Nationals would not include Robles when the return would have been Sales, unlikely that he would ne included now given that he’s a year closer to being in the majors. a healthy Eaton, Harper and MAT with Goodwin and Robles coming gives the Nationals all the OF they should need. a 5th starter is what they desire. ideally, a LHP. Ross wont be back till year end likely and Gio isn’t someone you can tie your horse to. Fedde has potential, but just that. lock up Rendon, make an offer for Bryce, pray Weiters rebounds some and Pedro can platoon with better results than Lobaton and above all…. pray for health. getting to the playoffs should not be the goal. fielding a team in October with holes plugged and playing lights out is the goal.

It isn’t a lock the Nats lost Harper and Murphy. Gio is overrated and awful in playoffs. Madsen is solid but not irreplaceable. I don’t get why everyone thinks they should mortgage the future for players that are nice but not elite and don’t dramatically increase their WS odds. Is Yelich a massive upgrade over Taylor (and if he struggles Robles)? Is Realmuto a big enough upgrade over Avila to part with Soto, Fedde and others for Realmuto?

I know Yelich and Realmuto are long-term assets themselves but their ceilings are not elite, Robles and Soto have elite ceilings. They have lower floors and greater risk but they are cheaper and can allow our Nats financial flexibility to sign free agents to fill holes created by leaving players.

Realmuto’s already a top 5 at his position and Yelich is a young and former silver slugger, solid defense at any OF position that can win batting titles. Can’t see the Marlins saying no to this deal.

Realmuto is a good catcher, for sure. Yelich is a very solid player on a great contract. But I still don’t think acquiring both makes sense for Nats at the cost mentioned above. obviously the Marlins would say yes but I don’t see any way the Nats make an offer like that.

        • tbonenats

Also, while Yelich is a good hitter it would take a huge spike in BABIP or some adjustments to go from a .290 hitter to one that will hit .340 go win a batting title.

I think the emerging truth of this off season is that there simply aren’t quality, must-have players out there. The better availables at the moment don’t play premium positions and all have several lower cost alternatives.

The FAs who are most “urgent” are pitchers. It’s just not a vibrant market for position players this year. Owners will wait out the prices and that’s ok by me. The baseball salary realm needs some correcting from to time.

I can tell you first hand that Red Sox Nation is NOT in on JDM. If you read the comments on the Red Sox site, you’ll see that the vast majority of the RS fans want another starter.. JDM is an over-hyped, under defending 1-year wonder. We especially do NOT want him if it means we need to trade away a young, contract controlled, star on the rise.

    Reply
    • Bruin1012

The reality is that JDM is a hitting monster. Look at his advanced hitting statistics he is an absolute monster and has been for awhile. He isn’t anywhere near a one hit wonder since he changed to a more fly ball approach he has been a monster. He could play left in Fenway but is more suited to DH. Just look at his advanced stats if you believe in that kind of thing. He hits the ball as hard as anyone in baseball and most of those are in the air he would kill it in Fenway. The real question is if he can stay healthy. If he plays DH he should stay more healthy his bat isn’t even a question.
