Astros Place Anthony Gose On Outright Waivers

By Jeff Todd | March 5, 2018 at 5:55pm CDT

The Astros have placed lefty Anthony Gose on outright waivers, per Jake Kaplan of The Athletic (Twitter link). That will ultimately open a 40-man spot, though it’s not clear whether the organization has immediate plans for utilizing it.

Gose was taken in the Rule 5 draft back in December, meaning any claiming team would need to retain him on the active roster for all of 2018 in order to keep him permanently. Given his prior MLB experience as an outfielder, he would be arbitration-eligible after the season were that to occur.

If Gose clears waivers, he’ll be offered back to the Rangers, who had signed him to a minors deal last fall. The Texas organization took a low-risk shot despite the fact that Gose had only previously thrown 10 2/3 High-A innings, over which he allowed nine earned runs and six walks but also recorded 14 strikeouts.

Despite the limited track record, the 27-year-old Gose has shown a powerful throwing arm on the hill and could also bring value on the bases and in the outfield. But it seems his interesting time in Astros camp did not make the desired impression. Gose failed to record an out in his only Grapefruit League appearance, issuing walks to all three hitters he faced.

Only one start tho. Can’t judge him off of that. Can’t call him “awful” when he didn’t even have a chance to show what he got

Sure you can. 3 batters, 12 balls, no strikes.

Yeah, yeah. He threw strikes, just none that mattered. There really wasn’t any room for mistakes to make the club.

Nooo!! He converted to pitching from OF

I was rooting for him. :/ His Spring training debut was a wild one, he faced 3 batters, walking all 3 (all reaching full counts) and all 3 scored.

Took Gose 19 pitches to walk all 3, and all of them fouled off a couple of tough pitches. He hit 98mph on the very first pitch. Someone claim this guy!!

Drafted by the Phillies. A lefty who can throw 98? Gotta be worth a shot for someone.

Goes to arbitration next year if claimed, too expensive for the Pirates owner Bob Nutting.

Why? Most of the Astros relievers are better or as good as him. He won’t be cheap and he’s not worth it.

Considering the struggles of the bullpen late last season and in postseason, if you can get him to accept a 1-year deal, you do it.

He’s not going to accept a 1-year deal. He turned down a similar offer to what Wade Davis got. Unless you’re willing to give him a 1/$22M+ contract he won’t sign for one year. Our bullpen is very good and we added 2 solid relievers in Joe Smith and Hector Rondon. There is no reason to add a decent, but overrated Greg Holland.

If there is pitching available to make your team better and you can get it on a team-friendly contract, you do it. Not a hard concept to grasp. I’m not saying give up 4 years. If he doesn’t sign soon, he will be taking a 1 year deal.

He’s not really much better than what they already have. Someone will give him a 3-year deal. He’s just not getting the AAV that he wants. He’s not coming to Houston.

Would have easily been Detroit’s worst trade in modern time had Devon Travis not been born injured.

Man, reading that article. I sure as hell would not want him in my clubhouse if I was a manager. It’s one thing to have a high level of self-confidence. It’s completely different to be conceited and arrogant when you are a failed OF, being converted into a pitcher, and have failed at that thus far as well.

I honestly would take A-Rod’s personality on a team over Gose.

That Chronicle article is just weird. Gose is an enigma. He’d be damn interesting if he could control the ball.

He should play in Japan, Ashe clearly wants to be an outfielder.

The signing was a surprise and a long shot. Guess it was worth trying? Dude was a little cocky for not pitching above A ball… I think he steps in as the 7th man in the rangers 8 man rotation.

He needs to connect w a good hitting coach and rebuild his swing. Great arm and super fast should get you to the bigs. Good hitting will keep you there.

Gose cannot and will not hit at the major league level. His bat is AAA. His speed, arm and atheticsm is all elite Major League level.

He has a cannon for an pitching arm but has no idea where the ball is going. He needs years in the minors to sort it out. I hope he can do it. #scoutseyes

The baseball people on the Toronto sports radio station were talking this morning about Gose’s “terrible attitude.” And this was before the DFA; the context, I believe, was comparing him to Granderson and Devon Travis.

Isn’t he a prototypical small ball NL OF? Runs, No Power, SBs. That’s not what AL teams look for, which is why he’s already flamed out. Go back to an NL team bud. Steal some bases.
