Giants Release Jarrett Parker

By Jeff Todd | March 30, 2018 at 7:56pm CDT

The Giants have released outfielder Jarrett Parker after he cleared waivers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports tweets. He had been designated for assignment recently.

It’s somewhat surprising to hear that the San Francisco organization is parting with Parker entirely after deciding not to keep him in the majors. The 29-year-old has at times been seen as a potentially useful MLB asset, but it seems the club just didn’t have the space available at Triple-A and decided to allow Parker to explore other possibilities.

Parker did go down on strikes twenty times in his 48 plate appearances this spring, but also ended up posting a healthy .561 slugging percentage. He’s a .274/.368/.503 hitter at Triple-A and has hit at better than a league-average rate in his 382 career MLB plate appearances, so there’s little question that Parker will draw some interest from other organizations.

It is a surprise they didn’t keep him as minor league depth, but I guess with Duggar, Slater, Williamson, Shaw, etc. all competing for time, Parker wasn’t going to get much. I think the Giants were doing him a favor letting him go to seek better opportunities elsewhere.

I thought they would outright him to Sacramento, but, after reading your post, I can see why they did not. They were doing Parker a favor. I should catch on somewhere.

    Should’ve released Gorkys instead..

Gorkys is at least useful. Parker was not.

Parker’s lifetime ops is 800. Gorkys is 600. Gorkys has a lifetime -1.0 WAR. Parker has a 1.4 WAR in 200 ABs. Who’s not useful again

They are both similar players in some respects. Parker has much more power while Gorkys hits for better average., which at this point isn’t saying too much. Gorkys is better than Parker defensively and plays center very well. Parker is okay in the corners, with a great arm. For me the key was Gorkys hitting improved measurably as the year wore on last season. I think he is much more useful than Parker this year. My hope was they would release Parker and Blanco and keep Williamson..

At this time…..Gorkys fits the roster….Parker does not….in the future…if and when Duggar comes up….then he probably will the next one out

Gregor Blanco is essentially the same player. Just slightly older but offsets with better hitting

Blanco is better both offensive and defensively

@azcrook. Are you saying that because Gorkys is a RH hitter or for some other reason?

I’m not much of a fan of Parker or Gorkys but honestly think that either one of them would go to another team and instantly hit better. Seems to always happen.

The Giants need new management. Everytime a golden boy has a good year they throw out the 20 million dollar contracts. Now they’re sinking under the weight of all those anchors. They need to be more cut throat. Lincy getting paid tens of millions to be a mediocre reliever when it was obvious he was done? WTF? Farm system bare when they used to find so much gold in Latin America they had to give some away.

They’ve had low picks. And ur “anchors” have titles and are still productive.

They are also a high-revenue team with a high payroll and they can afford those “anchor” picks very easily. I mean, they were winning with guys like Zito and Rowand and post-good Lincecum and now Melancon and Pence and Cueto, and even going back to the days of Noah Lowry and Pablo and Michael Morse, and Cain’s contract was bad at the end, Angel Pagan was paid a hefty sum by the team….some teams can afford to do this and still win.

Honestly. Last year I would have LOVED Pagan on the roster to play LF. He would have done better than the players SF tried out there. Yeah sure he wasn’t going to hit for power but nobody they played in left did either.

What does any of that have to do with Parker?

The original comment was mentioning the Giants barren farm system and its inability to produce much talent, instead signing players to bad contracts. That strategy is okay when you’re winning.

Hey @allduke11 congrats on the first post! But you make a fair point. SF has gone the veteran route and like it or hate it. You’re stating fact and I guess some others have posted things to the same point but yours was snarky yet still funny. I got a laugh out of it! Keep posting man!
