Orioles Designate Jose Mesa Jr., Announce Alex Cobb Signing

By Jeff Todd | March 21, 2018 at 12:00pm CDT

The Orioles have designated Rule 5 righty Jose Mesa Jr. for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot will go to veteran starter Alex Cobb, whose four-year contract is now official.

Mesa, 24, was the last of three pitchers taken by the Baltimore organization in the most recent Rule 5 draft. Obtaining his rights in full from the Yankees would have required that the O’s carry him for all of the upcoming season on the active roster. Now, unless his Rule 5 rights are either traded for or claimed off waivers, Mesa will be offered back to the Yanks.

The young hurler obviously showed enough to draw interest from the Orioles after being left unprotected. In 84 innings at the High-A and Double-A levels last year, he allowed just 18 earned runs on 48 hits and 32 walks while recording 101 strikeouts. But it seems he’ll need some more seasoning before trying out the majors. Mesa struggled in his chances this spring, recording five strikeouts and seven walks in 7 2/3 innings.

Wright could become really good. You don’t give up yet on an arm like that.

I actually think he will be the next to go…or maybe Ynoa. The other two rule 5 guys look really good. I could totally see Mike Wright becoming the next Arrieta. Has the stuff,..just needs to figure it out.

End it is for that reason precisely that they will not give up on him. They have learned from the mistakes with the Cubs.

In the sense that he just needs to put it together, then yes, but Wright’s stuff is nowhere near as electric as Arrietta’s.

Mesa is not MLB ready. Wright will probably break camp then get DFA’d when Cobb is ready to go. Unless he shows something. I think 90% of his problems are mental and idk how you fix that.

I hope he comes back to the Yankees. The kid has potential.

He’s coming back. No one is keeping him on the MLB roster. He’ll be buried on the Yankees depth chart but maybe he’ll show something and you can flip him.

Tigers, Marlins, Reds….. There are a couple teams that could take a shot at leaving him on an MLB roster in order to keep his rights if they really see something in him. Teams have done it before.

Wright doesn’t have the right temperament to be a major league pitcher.

No one really expected him to make the team out of camp. Cobb move was slick and I hope I’m not screaming Ubaldo 2.0 come 2022.

I think it’s much more likely that Cobb is injured and not producing anything v putting up ubaldo numbers. That’s probably preferable. we couldn’t get ubaldo off the field with an injury if we tried. T

Pretty easy choice. He pitched his way out of an opportunity. Regardless a club shouldn’t be banking on a rule 5 pick to make or break their pitching staff. I’m glad the Orioles equipped themselves with mlb arms. Tillman sadly is debatable.

Any O’s fans know the status of Dariel Alvarez and his health/efforts to become a pitcher? I’d appreciate any insight.

O’s signed him to be a pitcher. Went on the DL 3 days later and had Tommy John Surgery. So he spent all of last year hurt and has not seen game action yet. (that I know of…)
