Rangers Designate Brett Nicholas, Announce Signing Of Tim Lincecum

By Jeff Todd | March 7, 2018 at 8:37am CDT

The Rangers announced today that they have designated catcher Brett Nicholas for assignment. His roster spot was needed for the addition of righty Tim Lincecum, whose previously reported signing is now official.

With this move, the Rangers could be slated to utilize Juan Centeno as the backup to regular receiver Robinson Chirinos. With younger backstop Jose Trevino also on the 40-man and veterans Curt Casali and Michael Ohlman also in camp as non-roster players, there are a few other options on hand, too.

Of course, Nicholas may well end up back in Rangers camp himself if he clears waivers. The 29-year-old has only limited MLB time, with 110 plate appearances over the past two seasons. He has produced solid numbers with the bat at Triple-A of late, though, with consecutive .809 and .822 OPS campaigns.

I agree, if he falls that far on the waiver wire.

Nats must be pretty desperate then.

They do need catching, but Nicholas seems to be a guy to give a shot to. He’s hit pretty good in the minors lately

The cover photo makes this seem so much darker.

Nicholas deserves his chance to be a big league catcher.. He has looked good when he’s been given an opportunity.. Don’t understand this move at all for the Rangers

I agree 100%. Out of the catchers they have on the 40 man roster, Nicholas shouldn’t have been the one to be DFA’d.

Should have been Centeno. Nicholas is a decent hitter, especially for a backup catcher. Lefties with power at that position are valuable off the bench

I agree. Nicholas deserved a chance this year, and it’s not like Centeno’s any great shakes.

The Pirates should make a play for Nicholas and cut Lavarnway loose.

Hope the Braves claim or trade for Brett Nicholas. The team has no catcher after this year with MLB experience.
