Padres To Select Contract Of Tyson Ross

By Jeff Todd | April 3, 2018 at 10:20am CDT

The Padres will select the contract of veteran righty Tyson Ross in time for him to start today’s contest, MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell reports on Twitter. He joined the team on a minors deal over the winter.

Ross had been reassigned to open the season, but was expected to join the MLB roster in short order once he was needed to make a start. He’ll earn a $1.75MM base salary and can also achieve up to $4.25MM in incentive pay that accrues with every fifth start.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see whether Ross can rediscover the form that made him such an effective hurler for the Padres in his original run with the organization. Injuries have intervened, of course, and Ross was markedly ineffective (7.71 ERA, 36 K, 37 BB) in his 49 MLB innings last year while maintaining career-low velocity readings on his four- and two-seam fastballs.

That said, Ross had quite a strong track record before his shoulder problems began. And reports were fairly promising this spring. Ross allowed five earned on ten hits in his 15 Cactus League innings, with an 11:6 K/BB ratio.

Why does a Cubs fan have so much hate for the Padres? They should be grateful to the Padres for gifting them with Rizzo.

Jed Hoyer better be sending Josh Byrnes a Christmas card every year for that one.

Sixflags, I don’t have hate for the Padres. I have a strong dislike for Ryan who constantly belittles EVERYONE for their opinions. It didn’t matter if you agreed with him or not, he still put everyone down for their thoughts.

Can’t be any worse than some of the pitching we’ve seen so far… here’s to hoping he can get some sort of trade value built up before the trade deadline! Wishful thinking..

That sure seems to be the pattern. Get washed up guys or guys on the verge of, have them pitch in pitcher friendly ballpark, then trade them at the deadline for prospects.

Good plan. Hopefully we’re in year 4 of this three-year plan LOL.

I think this team is MUCH further off on this rebuild than some fans are thinking. I’m hoping I’m wrong… but with the majority of our top quality pitching prospects still in the low minors, and very few hitting prospects (coupled with our already anemic offense)… I think this could still be a while

2019 2020 has always been the estimated time frame. The hitters are moreso ready than pitching with tatis urias cordero up sometime this year once we trade pirela spangenberg headley galvis.

With quantril nix lauer up by mid 2019 and gore Baez up by 2020.

Tatis played one good season in low a ball… with a handful of games as a call up to AA at the end of the year, where he “held his own” (a classic Padres prospect description). Spring training stats leave little impression. I’m hoping he turns out to be what he is hyped as now also… but before I say he’s more ready than our pitching prospects, I’d like to see if he can hit quality pitching first. The thing about a high grade on prospects so low in the minors, is they could look great on low a, then completely lost once they face refined secondary pitches at AA. He could cement himself as a legit talent this year in AA…. but he could also look overmatched and exposed against higher talent. Let’s hold off on saying Tatis Jr is near major league ready….

Margot, Urias, Tatis Jr, Hosmer, Myers, Cordero should be one of the more productive and exciting lineups in the NL next year.

Disagree. Based on his past success in SD, they feel good with what he showed in Spring Training. Gotta love Pomeranz who could easily be a top ten starter IF he could stay healthy. Not comparing the two but the comment was made about the big ball park. A good pitcher can pitch anywhere. Remember when it was said that a lefty couldn’t start at Fenway? If all can get healthy, Boston will have four lefties in the rotation.

And the padres paid 13 million for Mitchell. Not surprised he’s off to a less than fantastic start.

Clayton Richard looked solid. Lucchessi once he settled down looked good too. If it wasn’t for a rare Hand hiccup in the 9th, that’s a solid win. Not too discouraged by our start so far this year but good lord Bryan Mitchel and Luis Perdomo looked awful. Do you think we’d try and flip Richard if he is having a Pomeranz-like first half?

What are you going to get for Richard? He’s long been proven as an innings eater and little else. He doesn’t have the same pedigree Pomeranz has.

Ross looked good in the spring, so let’s see if it carries over. Can’t be much worse than Perdomo or Mitchell so far…

Does anyone know if Ross’ velocity was back up this spring? I’m surprised there was no mention of that …

He wasn’t hovering around 92-94 for the most part. Slider didn’t look as sharp as it did in previous years, but hopefully that’s just due to rust in spring training. His slider was one of the better sliders in the majors… and he didn’t really have a third pitch. So if the slider is failing him, and he only has average fastball velocity/movement…. he could be in for some rough outings. Hoping he bounces back though
