Red Sox Place Xander Bogaerts On Disabled List

By Steve Adams | April 9, 2018 at 3:59pm CDT

The Red Sox announced that they’ve placed shortstop Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day disabled list due to a “small crack in the talus bone in his left ankle.” Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston first reported that the Sox were going to place Bogaerts on the DL with a bone injury in his foot, adding that Bogaerts is in a walking boot (all Twitter links).

While any kind of broken bone is worrying, it seems this is rather a minor injury. Indeed, the Sox’ announcement indicates optimism that Bogaerts can return in 10 to 14 days. They’ve recalled infielder Tzu-Wei Lin from Triple-A Pawtucket in the meantime.

Nevertheless, it’s unfortunate to see Bogaerts face an obstacle after he had turned in a strong opening run to the 2018 campaign, with a .368/.400/.711 slash over his first forty plate appearances. Last season was a bit of a down year at the plate for Bogaerts, who is still just 25 years of age. He’s already earning a healthy $7.05MM salary this year and could command a big payday in his final season of arbitration eligibility if he can return in relatively short order and continue to be productive with the bat.

I hope the NYY leave a few crumbs after they demolish the Sox when they visit this week.

Yeah cause the 5 and 5 Yankees and their middle relief core really took care of and demolished the Orioles and Blue Jays. Good luck with that.

You’re making a lot of assumptions one week into the season, last year in April the Orioles finished the month 15-8. Ever hear of a small sample size? The Yankees bullpen have at least 4 guys who throw 100mph with incredible whiff inducing breaking balls.

They also got a solid lineup and solid rotation that will 100% get it going throughout the season. The Sox and Yankees will battle it out for first place all year, should be exciting to see who falls off and gets that first wildcard spot!

Didn’t you watch the opening series with the Jays? Boone has a lot of toys and does not know how to properly utilize them. That was a Yanks sweep they turned into a split.

Any assumption by either side is a too soon assumption. But man does Stanton love to strike out.

If the Red Sox has a hitter that could hit 50 HR a year that player would strike out a lot as well.

For those of you sitting in the Green Monster this week, I suggest that you wear a batting helmet when the Sox have lefties on the mound.

Thank god this doesn’t seem to be an injury that will impact him for too long. Also better now than September or October right? Shame he will miss Yankees series considering how well he had been doing. Also now both sox middle infielders are out. I’m comfortable with Nunez replacing one but not too confident if it is Holt or someone from Pawtucket.

On anyone, can be tough. I realize my age is showing but the Sox a) wouldn’t have made the playoffs in 86 if it weren’t for Buckner playing in August and September on two but ankles but b) he had nothing left to give by the time the WS was played. Look up how many times Rice got up to start an inning. Much more than the clean up hitter should have. Let Xman rest and come back only when 100%. This is April. Same with Pedie. On the Yankees’ side, ditto with Bird who was as key to last years playoff success as anyone.

Holt when healthy has been phenomenal in small doses. Also, Lin showed last year and in spring training that he also can do the job short term. Key seems to be whether the ankle will heal as compared to be a lasting lingering injury. From what has been written, he should be ok upon return. Xman however hasn’t always healed quickly.

Cracked talus bone requires 8-12 weeks to fully heal. Playing on it would be painful and risk a more complete fracture. 10-14 days is nutso

Maybe a complete fracture takes 8-12 weeks, so since this is a small crack may be the reason it’s only 10-14 days?

It was just a little Boston crack? Seems to be a bit of discrepancy in the healing times. 10-14 days to start playing on it sounds a bit hopeful.

Expect him to be out longer. Just a guess but the ten day DL allows teams to reassess with no real penalty.

    AL East (Current 2018 Standings)
    Red Sox 8 1 —
    Blue Jays 6 4 2.5
    Yankees 5 5 3.5
    Orioles 4 6 4.5
    Rays 2 8 6.5

    FanGraphs 2018 Projections
    Red Sox 96-66
    Yankees 94-66

    So what can I say?

Hate to see a great athlete in a hitting streak like Bogarts go down.

Maybe Nunez goes to SS and Pedroia to 2B when Pedroia gets off the DL.?

Tough loss for the Red Sox but it could have been worse.

With rest Bogarts should be fully back in 2-3 months.

I mean…I’m on #TeamRedSox in the battle of Boston vs New York…but those Fangraphs Projections imply the Yankees are only going to play 160 games this year…unless they’re expecting some ties? I’d double-check those numbers, dude.

Regardless, you don’t just lose your starting SS who is one of the better hitters on the team for “2-3 months” and not lose a beat. Here’s hoping Xander heals quick and can bounce back sooner rather than later.

The FanGraphs projections have the Yankees at 94-68 (162 games):

JD, teams can only play the schedule they’re given. Games count the same regardless of when played and not you but how many others would be laughing if they didn’t start out this way. Let the season play out. The beauty of baseball is the long season permits lousy teams to go on a five game win streak or a 10-3 roll. It also allows playoff teams to have short term droughts. Key injury here, hot pitching or even lucky bounces there and the Internet trolls would be screaming far differently…

Agreed. Anyone outside of their fan base giving the Mets the division or even the “Mayors trophy”? For those who don’t know, back long before interleague games. the two NY teams would during the season play an exhibition game so the winner’s fan base could have bragging rights.

Cracked bone? I’ve broken enough bones to know it takes 4 to 6 weeks to settle and 8 to 12 to heal….If I was Bogaerts I’d be getting a second opinion so I can sit….I know it’s a different sport but that is what Kawahi Leonard has done….He said I’m not right and I’m sitting…..10 to 14 days unless they are supporting it with screws is insane…..

Bogaerts has no plausible reason to play hurt so early in the season. Sox have depth for 6 weeks and if they really need a SS, call Detroit and get back Iglesias to play outstanding DEFENSE for the time he is out and Iggy can play anywhere in the INF. He’s a FA at the end of the year and would only cost a marginal prospect.
