Blue Jays Acquire Gio Urshela

By Jeff Todd | May 9, 2018 at 3:02pm CDT

The Blue Jays have acquired third baseman Gio Urshela from the Indians, per a club announcement. Cash considerations or a player to be named later will go to Cleveland in return.

Urshela, 26, had recently been designated for assignment after opening the year on the DL. The out-of-options infielder did take 42 plate appearances at Triple-A on a rehab assignment, slashing .324/.405/.432.

Though he’s considered a quality defender, Urshela has struggled at the plate in his opportunities in the majors. Over 453 total plate appearances, he carries only a .225/.273/.405 batting line with seven home runs.

Good luck to Gio, a great glove man that never found the bat that would justify his roster spot.

I wouldn’t say he is trash he just doesn’t hit. And remember Shapiro was running the show in Cleveland when Gio was drafted too. Must still think he can be more than a defensive sub.

Would have been better off just re-signing Goins if they’d be going after a glove-first infielder with little to no bat.

Yes as I said in spring training signing Goins was the thing to do., This brilliant Jays Mmt team does this now? I think this Jays Mgmt staff needs to look at acquiring starters and another closer. Fire Atkins now.

We’ve already got a cluster of former closers with Oh, Clippard, and Axford. This Jays management staff has its blinders on still thinking this team can contend. The team we’ve seen the last week or two is more like what this team is, a barely .500 club that won’t make the playoffs.

Fire Atkins for not paying Ryan Goins $1.5 million (or whatever his arbitration price would have been) and adding depth in season by trading cash considerations?

        Seems like a drastic step…..

It would more be for the unrealistic belief that this team can contend, and holding onto assets while their value decreases day by day. The rotation which so many think it’s a great rotation really isn’t that great as the numbers this year have shown, and the offence isn’t good enough to compete with the likes of the Yankees and Red Sox. The team from Osuna to Donaldson should have been blown up at the deadline last year to bring in young talent to grow with Vlad Jr and Bo.

        • cjmask

Osuna and Donaldson are perfect examples. Last deadline everything was great with them and their value was higher. This year Josh has throwing problems, reducing his value, and Osuna has legal issues to work out, reducing his value. Those 2 alone would have restocked the shelves, and that’s not to mention what Stroman would have received. But sure. Bring in Urshela and Solarte and Diaz and Ngoepe while the Yankees bring in Stanton and Sonny and the Red Sox bring in JD Martinez and try to pretend the Jays can play with the big boys.

        • jimmertee

Totally right-on. This Blue Jays team should have been gutted last trading deadline. Time to replace the Jays executive team. Blunder upon blunder.

It’s the right thing to do. You’ll hear it until the right thing is done,: either the mgmt team is fired or replced or the Jays tear it down, tank and really rebuild.

Here’s two statements by jimmertee. Can BOTH of them be correct?

          > Yes as I said in spring training signing Goins was the thing to do.
          > Urshela is a minor piece that will add nothing to winning a championship this year.

Who happens to be correct most of the time, starting from a few years ago when I said to blow it up after the last playoff appearance and a 100 other correct calls since then. #Scoutseyes

        • TrimReaper

That’s because the Blue Jays are dragging their feet in-denial. All people, like Jimmer, can do is talk about what should have been done last year.

        • TrimReaper

You forgot about the Diaz acquisition. Wasn’t necessary as the Jays had Goins. That’s a major detail you left out. Keep Goins, no need for Diaz.

Urshela, for no reason, is about to be added to the 25-man.

          So yes, Jimmer was correct.

        • jimmertee

Diaz has good pop in his bat and can pick it up sometimes, sometimes it gets booted, but a sub 200 BA is not acceptable. It’s too bad, he is a good clubhouse guy and works hard.

He is a dead red hitter and any pitcher who can exceute a good offspeed plan can get him out.

          Back to the minors.

          I’d rather have Goins.

        • TrimReaper

Me too. Diaz is making $2-mil, Urshela league mininum plus whatever cash was sent to Cleveland is somehow better than Ryan Goins at $1.8? Some of these alleged Jays fans are using some weak arguments against Goins.

        • Stormie

It’s Ryan Goins. What arguments could anyone make about him that would be weak?

Domestic violence is not a joking matter, neither is mental illness which Osuna appears to be suffering from.

But the Osuna giveway scheduled for tomorrow and the fund raising in light of the Osuna news can be laughed at..
