Angels Place Garrett Richards, Nick Tropeano, Zack Cozart, Jim Johnson On 10-Day DL

By Jeff Todd | June 15, 2018 at 5:11pm CDT

The Angels have announced a significant roster shuffle occasioned by a few injuries. Starters Garrett Richards and Nick Tropeano are each hitting the DL, as are infielder Zack Cozart and reliever Jim Johnson.

It’s not fully clear how severe these injuries are, but it’s still an ugly casualty list for a team that has already had some worrying health issues arise recently. Richards has a left hamstring strain, while Tropeano is dealing with right shoulder inflammation.

With Shohei Ohtani already on the shelf, likely joining JC Ramirez and Matt Shoemaker there for a lengthy stretch, the team’s rotation depth has already been tapped into. It seems the team is likely to call upon John Lamb in the near-term, as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register tweets that he’s with the team (though not yet active). That’ll require a 40-man move. Otherwise, the best 40-man possibilities are Parker Bridwell, Felix Pena, and Miguel Almonte.

Pena is among the four players coming up to take the open roster spots for the time being. He could presumably become a rotation option, but there’s a pressing enough need that it’s fair to wonder if outside possibilities will be pursued.

Along with Pena, the team has called up three additional right-handed hurlers to help absorb innings. Eduardo Paredes, Akeel Morris, and Jake Jewell will all come off of the Triple-A Salt Lake roster to join the club in Oakland. That’ll at least help the team deal with the absence of Johnson, who has a lumbar strain.

In some regards — without knowing details yet from the team — Cozart’s injury may be the most worrisome. It’s particularly poor timing given that Andrelton Simmons is also sidelined, though the real concern here is the question of severity.

Cozart has been diagnosed with a left shoulder subluxation, a potentially worrying injury. That injury has in recent years sent at least two players — righty Carson Smith and infielder Marco Hernandez — to the operating room for season-ending procedures. Hopefully, that won’t be needed in Cozart’s case, but the fates of those players serve to illustrate the seriousness of injuries of this general variety.

Is Fletcher still on the big league roster? He’s not in the lineup tonight.. kinda pisses me off after his 3-4 debut.

I hate to be negative but the Angels have no chance of making the playoffs, which is truly sad. They are too right hand strong and really wish they picked up different starting pitchers. Oh well I guess. Long season left, will see….

Angels coaching staff has to figure a lineup and stick with it, I’m frustrated as a fan to watch different lineups every night.

I know they are all a bunch of very injury prone guys going down, but this is also getting pretty excessive to the point organizational practices should probably be looked at.

Fluke injuries are one thing, but many of the things affecting the Angels seem to be more overuse injuries, which should be able to be minimized with proper training and conditioning.

It’s one thing if this was an outlier, but the Angels have been decimated with injuries for several years running now.

I’d imagine Tyson Ross and/or AJ Happ would be good options. The Angels supposedly have an improved farm system and while starting pitching is always in high demand, I don’t see their prices being too high

I wonder if the Angels will promote Canning. Not ideal obviously, but he’s their best option at this point. 5 of their top 8 starters are on the DL

Correction, 6 of 9 – don’t forget about Alex Meyer

And Parker Bridwell is on the Bees DL, so I guess it is 7 of 9

        Counted Bridwell already…
Forgot Ramirez and Meyer, if you consider them better than Canning then it’s 7/10 hurt.
        Barria Skaggs Heaney all healthy

Canning has merely about 2 months in pro ball and isn’t expected until late 2019. He’s more a last resort type.

Same is fairly true of Barria honestly. He is just 21 with little time in advanced ball. Was not expected until possibly a ’18 September callup.

One other guy who would have been an upper level/ML ready option for a call about now is Nate Smith. But he too has been hurt for the last year plus.

30 teams just drafted some pitchers. The highest the Angels took one was the third round… and you don’t call up your picks that quickly in baseball.

Simba should be back soon so the Cozart injury won’t sting as much. Plus with Fletcher/Fontana/Fernandez able to play all over the INF depth should not be an issue. The real problem is pitching. The rotation has been decimated and the pen has grossly underwhelmed. Maybe Jewell and Lamb can prove their worth but reinforcements are needed. Instead of the top of the market names being bandied about here is rather see us look at Danny Duffy from KC. He’s not cheap and has struggled much of the year but that should lower the asking price and there is clearly talent in that left arm. Kyle Barraclough is a BP I’d look into. High K High BB guy but the stuff is there. We need to gamble on controllable upside as opposed to established rentals IMO

Bear claw is gonna cost a lot though. You aren’t going to get him without giving up a prospect of consequence. Duffy will be relatively cheap to acquire. I agree the angels should probably be looking towards the next couple of years as well because it’s going to be hard for them to do much this year.
