Brewers Designate Boone Logan

By Jeff Todd | June 19, 2018 at 2:36pm CDT

The Brewers have designated lefty Boone Logan for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot will go to right-hander Freddy Peralta, who was recalled to take a start this evening.

Logan, who’s closing in on his 34th birthday, simply never got things going after joining the Brewers on a one-year deal over the winter. His $2.5MM guarantee included a buyout for a club option in 2019, which obviously now will not be exercised. The contract also included a hefty $3.2MM incentives package that started to accrue after 25 appearances.

Logan will continue to receive the promised money, but won’t see any of that potential extra cash. He opened the year on the DL and has struggled since being activated. In 10 2/3 innings, he has allowed seven earned runs on 15 hits and 10 walks (three of them intentional).

To be fair, Logan has also run up 14 strikeouts and shown well in terms of average velocity (94.3 mph on his fastball) and swinging-strike rate (14.0%). That said, the walks seemed to be a product of real command troubles. Logan has worked in the zone at a 45.0% career rate, but has done so on just 33.9% of his pitches thus far in 2018.

They’ll probably sign him to a minors deal so he and Repczynski can battle it out for the title of human bullpen torch.

For what Cleveland wasted on him last year ($7 mil?) he ought to be cleaning the stadium after games.

Somewhat surprising seeing as how he is still owed a minimum of $625k next season too.

It was an option year, hence they declined the option and don’t need to pay his salary

Are you actually trying to justify Logan by citing 14 strikeouts? The guys allowed 25 base runners in 10 2/3 innings. I don’t care if he struck out all 32 outs in that time, he was still awful.

Seems like 2018 is a carbon copy of 2017 for Logan. Tribe couldn’t get rid of him fast enough, and now Milwaukee has given him the bum’s rush out the door. Despite two years of health issues and horrific performances, some team will give him a minors deal, and all you’ll hear are accolades from that team’s fan base on what a great low risk move it is. Yeah whatever.

I like this decision now can we DFA Sogard( even though I like him) and put Arcia down to work on his swing. Bring Miller and Orf up it can’t hurt to try. Also we have to decide on Santana trade him or find more playing time. I think maybe trade him and let Phillips be the extra outfielder. Kratz is ok but would rather start working in Bettencourt or Nottingham in as a catcher

I see we now have a 40 man roster spot now I wonder if they are considering giving it to Orf, Huira, Corbin, or Derby?

Stubby I gotta give you credit for banging that orf drum in almost every post. Miller is a butcher in the middle infield, but right now up the middle is horrible. DFA sogard for sure. I was pretty sure they were gonna trade Domingo this winter, but they didn’t and now he has lost almost all trade value. hitting like 250 with no power. Kratz is working out fine but long term Nottingham will replace him. Kratz has convinced me he’s worthy of a roster spot. playing good d and bat works out sometimes

No, someone on BrewCrewBall is adamant about getting Orf up so I thought you all might be the same person. That’s all.

Yes that would be me . I love talking about the Brewers and what possibilities we could do to make the team better. in all honesty I don’t think they need to do many trades to bring players in. I like a lot of the young guys in our system. I wish our roster could be more. Guys I feel need to be off the 40 man is Sogard, Franklin, Miller and honestly don’t think we need Miley. Now if we aren’t going to give Orf, Bettencourt, Archer, Wilkerson, Wren, Broxton a chance would like to see them get a chance some place. So far I do believe that Corbin, Derby, Nottingham, Erceg, Trevor Williams, Griep,Olczak and Huira have so far earned a call up in September

The Brewers have been real fun to follow these last two years and even going back to to the early Fielder years. I agree with Sogard and Franklin, not too optimistic on Miller and holding out hope for Miley but even if we drop those four, we don’t have room for all of the other six. Wren and Orf seem to be the biggest disappointments in terms Sterns giving them a chance. The others have been given a chance elsewhere and all seem like injury insurance/AAA depth which is a great advantage to have for an organization. I sorta hope we don’t need Burns or Hiura until next year. I am guessing they still need developing. Don’t know really anything about Griep and Olczak. Who is Trevor Williams?

Oops that would be Devin Williams and he kinda will drop in with Bickford, and Kirby a couple years off but I agree with a lot that you are saying, maybe the Brewers could try and lock up some of these young talent like Hart did with the Indians

One batter at a time, so such a small sample size seems to skewer the numbers. Regardless, he’s horrible and wouldn’t waste a roster spot.

So I gotta question for you guys would DeGrom or Syndegard be worth giving up Corbin, Huira or Peralta? My guess 2 of the three would have to be dealt. Syndegard maybe but not DeGrom. I also think Huira could be called up now and Corbin along with Peralta would be ready no later then next spring. I would rather trade Davies and/ or Ortiz for maybe a guy like Sisco.

I’d rather keep hiura because the middle infield is in bad shape. I’m a Villar hater though. Do you think he’s a good long term guy? I don’t.

As much as I’d like seeing Syndergaard on our roster. I DO NOT want to see Hiura, Burnes, and Peralta traded away. All are on the verge of being a full time pro by the end of next season.

I agree with both you guys. maybe they just try to grab a step below top tier guy and hope one of their farm guys grow up into a one. Phillips or Domingo are the only guys I think the crew can do without.

I still love their future and the window is just beginning to open, so i don’t want to see them move to fast and lose someone who can help in the next 4 years

I wouldn’t give up both Burnes and Peralta. No way. One of them and any position player other than Hiura? Sure. That won’t get either DeGrom or Syndegard, but that’s fine. The Brewers are deep in starting pitching. If they want to add a vet with postseason experience, go after Hamels or Happ. Neither will cost them their 3 prized prospects.

Of course they will but Brewers couldn’t wait him out. They signed him to get high leverage outs and he wasn’t doing it. It’s the same scenario as with Neftali Feliz last year. They ate some money by releasing him in June also.

When you build a bullpen every year, it’s almost certain that one or two moves won’t work out. This one didn’t.
