Mets Deal With GM Sandy Alderson Runs Through 2019

By Jeff Todd | June 7, 2018 at 12:01pm CDT

Mets GM Sandy Alderson is under contract with the organization through the 2019 season, according to a report from Jon Heyman of Fan Rag. The veteran executive is earning $8MM total in the two-year agreement.

Alderson signed the deal with the team last December, representing a long-expected continuation of his tenure at the helm of the baseball operations department. At the time, though, the duration and value of the deal were not announced or firmly reported.

When he agreed to stay in charge, Alderson cited a desire to complete “some unfinished business” after a disappointing 2017 season. After shipping out several veterans in mid-season trades, the front office oversaw a busy offseason, that featured a variety of veteran additions.

Unfortunately, things haven’t gone as hoped thus far in 2018. The club is mired in a six-game skid and has fallen 7.5 games back of the pace in the NL East. Alderson already sent out former ace Matt Harvey and could now face some tough roster decisions at the trade deadline.

Recently, Alderson suggested that the Mets organization does not foresee any major deals involving core players. He indicated ongoing optimism that the current roster can compete, at least once it’s back to full health. But the pressure is building as the struggles continue.

In any event, barring a surprise shake-up, it’ll be Alderson who leads the charge in setting the strategy through the current season and into 2019. Whether he and the organization desire for the arrangement to continue beyond that point remains to be seen. It has been reported that assistant GM John Ricco is seen as an eventual successor.

As long as the Coupons stay owning the team, it really doesn’t matter who the GM is. Team is doomed until they sell.

Just the same as BAL. Alderson and Duquette are simply avatars for ownership.

Alderson got more AAV than I expected. Actually, I expected the terms, remain undisclosed. (Sign of cheap)

Both NY teams GMs got extensions recently.

Cashman got $5M AAV, his extension.

Alderson’s got $4M AAV, his extension.

The difference is guaranteed money. Cash got more than 3 times guaranteed money, as Sandy. (25M > 8M)

Every bit of news that comes out of the Mets organization is just static. Bottom line is that no major league team that has José Reyes, José Bautista, and Adrian Gonzalez on the roster is going nowhere fast. Wouldn’t be a bit surprised if they added Hanley Ramirez to the mix only because he’ll be available at league minimum.

The amazing part of this is that they portray these moves to be solid. The same thing with their mid priced fill ins that were bought off the sale rack as the players couldn’t attract a top tier team to pay them and opted for a slightly better pay day from the Flushing desperados.

And these players stats were paraded around like gospel; sure they will duplicate their best years’ stats. These second tier players are taking their share of DL staycation due to injuries and a lack of commitment to such a disfunctional group.

I feel sorry for the new manager as he probably would fair better under less dysfunctional circumstances.

Their laughing stock status is not something new or recent. Over the last 50 years this has been their self imposed fate.

Embarrass Mutt and Jeff to sell the team. That’s the only solution so a committed owner can clean house and bring in competent management and start over.

“Embarrass Mutt and Jeff to sell the team.”

That will never happen. Once the Katz-Wilpon group has stabilized its financial condition they will once again spend enough to compete. But for now the challenge for SA is and has been financial discipline.

They have no interest or intention of selling their team, their stadium or their teevee network. The real “laughing stock” is thinking that fans can shame the Wilpons into selling. Not happening, mikeyank. Deal with reality, perhaps?

majorflaw….the reality is this COULD happen. Problem is, you’d need a full commitment from fans to:

          1. Rescind season tickets and other packages for tickets
          2. Stay home and not attend games for at least a year
          3. Do not watch the team on television
          4. Refrain from buying team merchandise

None of that will happen. You will never get every fan to do this.

“3. Do not watch the team on television.”

That won’t work. If you are paying for SNY as part of your cable/satellite package it really doesn’t matter whether you watch the games.

I’d add another option: 5. Find another team to follow. Really, it’s much easier than you might think. Get the MLB internet package instead of cable and follow your new team instead of the Mets.

“None of that will happen. You will never get every fan to revolt.”

Correct. Teams are sold when ownership decides that its money would be better invested elsewhere. Occasionally an owner will be forced to sell due to personal financial losses unrelated to the team. None of that applies to the Mets, not even post-Madoff. Step right up and greet your future bosses, Jeffy Wilpon and John Ricco.

Sorry that your thinking has a major flaw. Stripping them of cash flow AND at the same time HURTING ratings can bruise their ego.

As long as hopeless Mets fans follow your outlook Major they will be pissing their $$$ and time to the wind.

There was a time when Los Angeles had a moronic owner who was incompetent financially as well. A combination of factors caused him to fold his tent AND the shame filled publicity was a big factor.

“Sorry that your thinking has a major flaw.”

You finally figured out that my UN can be used humorously. You must be so proud of yourself.

“As long as hopeless Mets fans follow your outlook Major they will be pissing their $$$ and time to the wind.”

Whatever are you talking about, mikeyank? I dumped the Mets in favor of the Nats, don’t go to Mets games, don’t buy Mets merch and don’t have a cable/satellite subscription. I’m doing everything TrimReaper suggested—and more.

“Stripping them of cash flow AND at the same time HURTING ratings can bruise their ego.”

If being exposed as financial naifs who got rolled by a well dressed conman didn’t embarrass them nothing will.

“There was a time when Los Angeles had a moronic owner who was incompetent financially as well . . . “

          Sorta with you so far.

“A combination of factors caused him to fold his tent . . . “

Not really. Due to his divorce, that owner was pretty much forced to sell.

“AND the shame filled publicity was a big factor.”

No, the inability to make payroll and open hostility from MLB were the only factors. No owner has ever been shamed into selling his/her team. Please grow up, mikeyank.

The Mets made (excluding costs) 81.2 million just off stadium operating income. That doesn’t include 150 mil from TV deals or ticket revenue. I find it hard to believe the Wilpons are still in financial trouble from Madoff. Especially when you add in their normal income from Sterling Equities these fools are in fine shape. They just don’t want to be embarrassed again like they were with some of the bad contracts they put out oh yeah and the worst team money could by. They don’t believe spending big money is the right business model. That’s why they get irate when the Yankees do anything big

Hey Eventually…there is hope! Go to http://www.igiveup.com and apply for a fan conversion form. There are still a hundred or so spots for Phillie’s AAA and Yankees (Trenton) AA teams. (Sorry there is a waiting list for the Scranton AAA team.)

I am happy to sponsor you since your behavior this season has become more rational as you have been working past your anger and resentment. However you will need a new identity here on this site. Here’s a tip: pick something simple. Avoid complex ones like this one:

      Mets2015NLChamps2016WSChamps

So the good work will get you points and pretty soon you will be eligible for discounted seats to a team’s home games far more exciting than the one whom you’ve placed blind loyalty previously.

Please note that there is an outside chance that membership to the MLB teams is possible in 2019. Your continued good behavior will help you gain a new MLB team in no time.

      Good luck on your journey!

Doesn’t matter who the GM of the Mets is.

Open a browser window at Baseball-Reference for the Mets Franchise History. Now open a second window for the Phillies Franchise History.

Notice the 50+ years of uninterrupted history. The Phillies and Mets always….for 50+ years……pass one another in the standings.

One is going up while the other is going down.

Two of the elite markets in MLB in the same division and they never, ever compete against one another.

Same $$$ as the Yankees and Red Sox with a polar opposite result.

    Just a “coincidence”.

The Mets are about to occupy the bottom of the NL Least for six years.

If I’m the Yankees I would gladly package Andujar and Frazier with Justus Sheffield and a couple of lower level prospects, to get DeGrom. A trade like that benefits both teams, considering how badly the Yankees want to win it all this season and the current state of the Mets.

Well they won’t trade for a good prospect since they don’t know how to handle true prospects. Development is not playing AAA in Vegas where even the batboy hits .320 and pops HR’s.

As a Met fan, sign me up for that one .. Nimmo, Conforto, and Frazier in the OF, Rosario and Andujar on the left side, figure out 2B and C, winner of Alonso/Dom at 1B, still have Noah, Matz, Wheeler, Gsellman, Lugo who hopefully continue to develop .. add a piece here and there and you’re set offensively for a good stretch

Hey Adam—I’m glad that you are a mets fan, because you sound like a mets fan. The Yankees are not desperate enough to trade all of that talent for deGrom, whom has talent and a fragile arm that could go in a snap of the fingers.

BTW-real teams have moments where they face reality and make critical decisions. You wouldn’t know watching a team who’s owners could care less and so they let bumbling Sandy and his retirement eligible friends bumble along aimlessly.

I don’t see the Mets and Yanks trading, the Mets pitching is good, they need to get some hitting from the regulars. At this point, Cepedes was a bad signing, he doesn’t play enough.

Mets can’t blame Rey Ramirez anymore for injuries. I believe this team has bad Karma (Wally Backman curse) and mismanagement from Alderson returning to a slow, limited fielding, homer happy team. Better defense, more athletic, more consistente hitting should have been the way to go.

Hey vibe. In all fairness the way to go is to boycott the Mets and force the coupons to sell. Embarrass them at the gate, with SNY viewership and even licensed merchandise sales.

Fans who have already bought tickets should refuse to enter the stadium until the 3rd inning to put further pressure on this farce.

Sandy has done his time fronting for the cheapskates. No hard feelings, but good riddance nonetheless.

Now, if he can figure out a way to take the Wilpons with him, then I’d be in favor of building a statute of him outside the entrance to Citifield, or renaming the rotunda after him and displaying his greatest moments (well, only one, but a biggie). Sorry, Jackie, you’ve done much for the game, but not a thing for the Mets.
