Red Sox First-Round Pick Triston Casas Out For Season Following Thumb Surgery

By Steve Adams | June 29, 2018 at 1:53pm CDT

Red Sox prospect Triston Casas, the team’s first-round pick in this year’s draft, will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb, according to a team announcement. Casas, an 18-year-old third baseman, appeared in just two games for the Red Sox’ Rookie-level affiliate in the Gulf Coast League before incurring the injury.

Clearly, it’s a discouraging outcome for both the organization and for Casas, who forewent a college commitment to the University of Miami in order to sign with the Sox for a $2,552,800 bonus. Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston hears that there’s optimism that Casas will at least be able to participate in the instructional league this fall (Twitter link).

It’s been a rough year for Boston prospects on the whole. In addition to the Casas injury, the Sox lost top prospect Jay Groome to Tommy John surgery. The organization’s No. 2 prospect, Michael Chavis, was hit with an 80-game suspension in early April following a failed PED test and has not yet played a game in 2018.

He will rehab and prove himself to the team in the Arizona Fall League.

Trader Dave has BIG plans for him during the winter meetings. He’s planning on swapping the kid for Miggy and moving Miggy back to 3B since Dave says, “he’s getting injured too often at first”.

This is the same site that believes calling a Batting Average of .248 decent.

“This is the same site that believes calling a Batting Average of .248 decent.”

They must be using the Phillies lineup as the standard.

.248 will be the average of the Mets player that is put into the all star team.

Jose Reyes is at the beginning of a tear to get to the important mark as the best hitter on the team.

I can be wrong, but I never saw them saying that a BA is decent, but the triple slash of BA, OBP & SLG.

So, what do you call a, e.g., BA of .248 (like you said), OBP of .400 & SLG of .550?

Great …the player can take walks and hit the ball over the fence. What about better contact and getting on base at the same time? If you want a Ryan Howard or Adam Dunn then there you go.

I already explained this to you. It’s exceedingly rare for our writers to comment at all about whether a batting average is good or bad, because it is not nearly as important as OBP and SLG.

It’s fine if you disagree with us on that score, but I’d be pretty surprised if you could cite a specific example where a writer specified that batting average — as opposed to a triple-slash that includes it — was “decent.”

(Oh, and fwiw, the league is collectively hitting .245 this year.)

There you go…you cited a BA without a triple slashline. Your right…248 is decent lmao

Not trying to be savage! I don’t mind being criticized and no doubt quite often deserve it. Just don’t appreciate misrepresentation.

          No. NO. Stop.

Nobody “made your point”. Not “Lol”. The original, slight argument you had (that the author was praising the prospect of a .248 BA) has already been shown to be wrong.

Please stop making the mistake far, far too many people make in your position, where they seem to think they need they need to save face and that the best way to do that is by continuing to argue and pretend their original argument was something other than what it was. It’s incredibly transparent behavior that fools no one and has the opposite effect of what you’re going for.

If you really want to save face, then admit you were mistaken. Trust me, you’ll get a lot more respect that way.

Non sequitir, and also not true, as your continuous insistence on getting in the last word is the proof. It’s not a good look. Grow up, please.

I’m sure you will respond, even though nothing you can possibly say at this point will send a better message than not saying anything. But whatever, go for it. Last word is yours if you want it.
