Blue Jays “Appear Close” To Striking J.A. Happ Swap

By Jeff Todd | July 25, 2018 at 9:18pm CDT

10:18PM: “The industry belief” is that the Yankees and Brewers are the front-runners for Happ, Sherman writes.  The Cubs still “might be in play,” though Chicago also asked the Jays about Marcus Stroman.  In another tweet, Sherman mentions that the Blue Jays like Yankees infielder Brandon Drury.

9:33PM: The Yankees still look like the favorite for Happ right now, with Feinsand calling them “the leader” of the teams in pursuit, and SNYTV’s Andy Martino saying the Bombers are “in strong position.”  A trade may not be imminent, as Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that a deal is “unlikely” to take place tonight.  (All links to Twitter.)  Both Feinsand and Martino list the Cubs and Brewers still being involved, with Martino adding the Rockies as a new team to the Happ rumor mill.  Feinsand feels the number of teams in on Happ will result in a nice trade return for the Blue Jays.

9:10PM: There are conflicting reports about the Yankees’ involvement in the trade, as Steve Phillips of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM tweets that the Jays are “focusing on finalizing” the Happ deal with New York.  Fancred’s Jon Heyman, however, reports that other teams are still in the running, and the Yankees “seem unaware they are getting [Happ], as of this moment.”

3:46PM: The Yankees are “heavy in the mix” for Happ, Feinsand tweets, with other teams (such as the Brewers) still possibly being in play.  The Cubs are one of the other teams involved, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.

3:39PM: As the Blue Jays and Twins began action at 3:07pm CT today, Happ hadn’t heard about a trade, Fancred’s Jon Heyman tweets.  Happ is in Toronto’s dugout, Sportsnet.ca’s Ben Nicholson-Smith and others have reported.

2:54PM: The Blue Jays “appear close” to striking a deal to send lefty J.A. Happ to a contender, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (via Twitter). Particulars of the potential match are entirely unknown, though certainly a variety of contenders make sense generally as destinations for the veteran starter.

Happ has mostly been a quality performer for the past several seasons. He currently sits at a 4.18 ERA on the present season, with peripherals suggesting he has been even more effective than the results would suggest. Though Happ endured a few rough outings recently, he racked up nine strikeouts and allowed just one earned run over five innings in his last start.

As a pending free agent on a struggling Toronto team, it has long seemed clear he’d be dealt this summer. Happ ranked sixth among trade deadline candidates on MLBTR’s recent list.

Last we heard, the Jays were said to be lowering their asking price on Happ as the deadline draws near. The Yankees, Phillies, and Cubs have been linked to him in recent weeks, though it’s not at all clear whether any of those teams is pressing to land the southpaw today.

Agreed, I’ll take numbers like that every 5th game. I’d rather see prospects traded for a better starting pitcher than Happ.

Plus, no way Cessa and Shreve are related. Maybe half-siblings, step-cousins, or in-laws, but full on related? I doubt that assertion.

I have only seen him win that shut out 6 inning game since he is with the Yankees, and it slays me when management thinks these pitchers have great stuff, so they wait, and wait, they shouldn’t wait that long anymore,
they should shut the door behind them.

Cessa has been very good in his past couple of starts. I would have no interest in Happ. He will not pitch in the playoffs, and I don’t think he’s better than what the Yankees can pull from their farm system.

Alternate Realities. -insert X-Files theme- The Yankees in an alternate universe will acquire J.A. Happ since Happ is retired prematurely in that universe. Once he’s done, he’ll be sent back to the Jays of this universe along with alternate reality prospects. It’s so crazy that…it’s crazy!!!

Well, what in the world is Stearns waiting for? Did the fact that they were tied for the division lead a few days ago surprise them? Did they have a plan to contend next year first? They need starting pitching (deGrom) and a shortstop/2nd baseman who can get on base at a .350 clip or better. Get it done. Striking gold on all prospects is very rare. Hang on to Hiura and start dealing everyone else.

Well, 1st of all they’re certainly not getting deGrom without giving up Hiura and the rest of the top 5 in the system. The Crew give up prospects when it’s for controllable players.

The Mets aren’t contending anytime soon. Two of the top five from the farm (Phillips, Ray -they need outfielders Cespedes…), add in Broxton, and maybe 2 pitchers from the top 10. That really doesn’t hurt the Crew that badly, but it sure helps the Mets. We get deGrom for a few years, which they need badly.

Jays trade Happ to Milwaukee for Herman Perez Twins trade Dozier to Milwaukee for 3 of their top prospects including Brett Phillips

Twins trade a prospect to Toronto to complete the 3 team trade. Obviously this is a joke. And I’m not serious. The best the brewers do is Asdrúbal Cabrera

Who is an upgrade for 3rd SS and 2nd.

Happ has been killed by the defence behind him in the last couple starts. He’s also been left in deep into games where no contending manager with any bullpen would leave him in the 8th inning or 7th for that matter.

His last start he threw 102 pitches over 5 innings, and 2 starts before that, he failed to make it to 4th. Happ’s gave up 27 runs in 31.1 innings last six GS. He got lucky Mookie’s Grand slam, all unearned.

How much worse would ERA be if 5 unearned runs Happ gave up against BOS, were all earned?

That’s the whole reason they’re unearned, because he should’ve been long out of the inning. Happ is rock solid and has been for years now. Not an ace but rock solid.

The only possible scenario where I see the Blue Jays getting a top 100 prospect for 2 months of Happ, is if the Blue Jays way 95%+ of what he’s owed for the remainder of the season. He’s not worth a top 100 prospect, especially as a rental. Machado is a much better player and also a rental, and the package the Dodgers sent to the Orioles was headlined by the #86 overall prospect.

Why on earth do the Blue Jays want Drury? The one thing they don’t need is another infielder. Their top prospects are infielders. They have Gurriel already in the majors. Guerrero Jr. & Bichette are coming soon. The Jays also have Smith & Biggio in the minors. They just traded for at least one first base prospect, maybe two. They got a infield prospect for Steve Pearce. They also still have Travis & Diaz in the majors. Solarte is still on the roster as of now (he could be traded). Donaldson will be back soon & he isn’t going anywhere as of now because he hasn’t played. Where does Drury fit? It seems like a bad fit

Many don’t realize: Since a visit to The Pitcher Whisperer in Pittsburgh back in ’15, in 88 starts, his team’s w-l is 55-33. On a team that could only be called “good” a month or two at a time….

that is crazy. liriano was clearly a better pitcher out of the pen and had control issues throughout his career which lends better to a short role. happ has proven he can be dominant most nights but does have a clunker occasionally.
