Phillies Considering Attempt To Acquire J.A. Happ

By Jeff Todd | July 16, 2018 at 11:15pm CDT

The Phillies are at least internally weighing pursuit of Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. The southpaw has emerged as one of the best rental starters available on this summer’s trade market.

Of course, there are also a few other names we’ve seen connected to the Phillies of late, and it’s not clear that Happ is a particular priority for the rising organization. While there’s “definite interest,” per Salisbury’s source, two particular players from another division rival remain bigger targets.

Multiple other contenders have been tied to Happ of late, as well, and it stands to reason that the Jays will let the market develop unless they’re bowled over by an offer. Happ’s recent malaise has certainly dinged his stock, though, and it seems that all involved have reason to see how his next few outings go before a deal is struck.

The 35-year-old Happ got his start with the Phillies but spent only one full season at the MLB level with the organization. He has been quite productive in recent campaigns, but has allowed a few more home runs (1.40 per nine) thus far in 2018 than he ever has before in the big leagues.

Ultimately, there’s value in Happ’s 109 innings of 4.29 ERA pitching this year. Looking forward, too, teams will be intrigued by the fact that he’s sporting 10.0 K/9 against 2.9 BB/9. Those numbers are backed by a career-high 10.1% swinging-strike rate and average fastball velocity that has trended up a bit over the course of the season.

With $13MM in salary this year, Happ isn’t particularly cheap, though there are no future entanglements since he is a rental player. That’s ultimately a reasonable sum for a pitcher who carries his recent track record. Some suitors may ask the Jays to keep some of the contractual obligation, though it seems reasonable to guess that the Phils would prefer to take on the remaining salary rather than upping the prospect return. Toronto’s preferences are not really clear at this stage.

The Phillies’ rotation has had some strong overall performances and is not exactly begging for an upgrade — particularly if Zach Eflin is able to return quickly from the DL with no ill effects, as seems to be the expectation. But depth is always key down the stretch and every game will count in a tight division race. Adding a multi-inning lefty to a possible postseason roster would surely also hold appeal.

Toronto is going to be more concerned with the prospect return than a team taking on all of Happ’s salary. They need to add more pitching that is at least close to the major league level.. That’s the bigger issue for the Jays, not the salary

This and acquiring Machado will be painful for the Phillies in terms of prospects. I often wonder if this is an attempt to run the acquisition cost up and then bow out on Happ. Machado on the other hand seems to be their true target.

Cause the Phillies can sign anyone now! What’s your problem? My point is a team isn’t going to be able to sign every player and this is just getting rediculous.becasue it has already been said they will give up Medina for machado. It’s hard enough to make one trade. Don’t throw there name in 100 other trades options.

Or maybe they are considering a lot of different options because they have the flexibility to do so? They aren’t saying they are going to acquire every single player available, just that they are in the mix for pretty much anyone that can improve the club. If they miss out on Machado, would you rather them not have put any work into acquiring anyone else? That doesn’t sound like a smart business decision.

Track record suggests the Jays will maximize prospect return over salary relief. They took on salary last year in acquiring Teoscar Hernandez, while the year before they took on Francisco Liriano’s salary in order to add two prospects to the system. The Steve Pearce trade also saw the Jays pay a good portion of the remaining salary to maximize the prospect return.

Wouldn’t say much about the return for Pearce. Espinal is 23YO, playing in A ball and journeyman at best.

the guy Boston sold to the Reds for extra IFA slot (Lorenzo Cedrola) was 3y younger, better hitter, better fielder and played same level, so don’t see how Pearce brought Toronto anything when the Reds pretty much sent space they couldn’t use themselves being in the penalty.

They really only got a guy who was having a pretty good season, even though he’s old for that level. Espinal isn’t a nothing prospect, I read some Red Sox blogs which said he has a very real chance of being a big league utility player.

Philly does need an arm. A lefty arm. They may wait 10 days to see what they, Atlanta and Washington do in their games. If you are Philly you only obtain Happ if you are preparing to win the division, not the WC.

2 of his last 3 and 2 of those last 3 were against Boston and N.Y. the games against Detroit and new York were bad. Boston’s major hit was the Betts Grand Slam which was a great at bat but also doesn’t happen if Travis doesn’t commit an error.

Happ isn’t going to command a major piece and can be the Phillies #3 at a minimum.

Jeff, even though the Jays have not published their trade request for Happ, I understand that they are asking for a haul. I hear they are asking for a Top 25 prospect [singular] or a top 100 prospect and another lower level thrown-in that is a genuine prospect.

The Yanks backed off and are looking elsewhere and this was reported in these blogs two weeks ago.

I hear there is a West coast team is in serious discussions.

My opinion on Happ is that the Jays better trade him soon before 2 or 3 more of his starts self destruct. I called him to throw a 150 innings this year in total. I can’t see him pitching [well] much more than that due to age,.

The Jays blew it with the timing of trading Donaldson, Smoak, Bautista and Estrada as [accurately] called in the pages over the last few years. This organization could have been much more ahead of where they are at now if they had correctly assessed the [poor] situation of the club and players above.

If the Jays could get a near ready top 75 level starter and a weaker throw in for Happ I would suggest that they take it soon.

Lucky Blue Jays’ fan. There’s your saving grace. Hope you get what Twins got for Jamie Garcia. (Rare trade Cashman — who won GM of the Year— got had bad…)

There’s a catch though… Yankees were only responsible for $500K league minimum of Jamie Garcia’s salary. If you expect a haul, Rogers can’t be cheap. Even in this sad state of SP market, they have to cover J.A. Happ’s salary, to expect any haul for 35 y.o starter on expiring.

No, the source of the Happ info is inside the Blue Jays room. That is why I have been so negative about the Jays leadership in the past.. When you know the actual stupidity of some of the in behind the scenes decisions like not trading Bautista in 2016 when there is no opportunity to win a championship and a good prospect in on the table it can get a little frustrating.

The Jays constant misjudging situations and poor team appraisals have cost this organization years of rebuild time.

I do understand why they are operating like they are. The goal wasn’t to win or too rebuild. The goal over the Shaprio/Atkins era was first money, pure and simple. To heck with rebuilding, let’s lie to the customers that we want to be competative and paint a picture we are trying to win.

The Yankees walking away from the Happ trade opportunity is enough proof of what I am saying, they are asking for a haul when the goal of trading Happ should be two-fold, getting as much as they can as soon as they can before he breaks down.

To Clarify, I wrote that due to rotation issues the Jays WOULD NOT compete for a championship in 2016. Go look it up if you want. That doesn;’t mean I didn’t cheer them on.

I correctly called the Cubs to win the world series that year.

FYI, I also correctly called the KC Royals to win the World Series in 2015. I called it before the playoffs even started that year.

If you look up these pages in Dec 2016-Spring training 2017, I called the Jays bad rotation issues and the miserable year. If you look up Dec 2017 -Spring training 2018 in these pages, I called exactly what is happening to the Jays this year. Strong start but due to rotation issues, they would be out of the playoffs by trade deadline day.

In Spring training of 2018, I called the Bosox to win the AL EAst but the Yankees to win the world series. Let’s see if I am correct.

So get over it. Some people do know what they are doing. And stop calling people names, it is not professional.

To repeat what I have written previously in these pages, and since you asked, Sinker, I called for Bautista to be traded in 2017 and 2016 at the trade deadline.

I know from a source in the Blue Jays room that at the 2016 deadline there was a more than decent prospect that could be had but Atkins and others in their delusions thought the Jays could compete in 2016. What a joke.

The Jays blew an opportunity to acquire a good piece in that deal.

Here’s the deal; Bautista wouldn’t have commanded much in 2017. Maybe I’m wrong, but I highly doubt it. 2016 was just frustrating because the Jays needed a bat and didn’t get it. Jays had to ride it out and play to win.

2015, as a mediocre .500 team you could have justified dealing Bautista. Instead they went for it and won the division. Good call? Yep.

2014 was a missed opportunity to win. Jays stood pat and did nothing.

In hindsight, what if the Jays had dealt Bautista and Encarnacion after the 2012 season instead of “going for it”? Odds are the Jays would have been competitive right around the same time-frame. But, the only misstep with Bautista in my opinion was overbidding after Bautista declined the QO.

I hear ya. Agreed for 2017 wouldn’t have gotten much for Bautista and I didn’t hear anything about a deal for Bautista then.

FYI, I saw that they were going nowhere is 2016. They didn’t have to ride it out. They needed to start a full rebuild then. I called for Donaldson to be dealt then too. And my source inside the Jays at that time told me there was a good deal offered for Bautista that Atkins didn’t go for.

          Hence my frustration..

I think Shapiro got “Hoodwinked” on the Atkins hire. Shapiro is a very good executive but he blew it with the Atkins hire and I think he is realizing it now. Depending on how the 2018 trade deadline is handled by Atkins will tell us whether Atkins has a job with the Jays next year.

That is why AA is no longer here in my opinion; Shapiro wanted to hit reset during the 2015 season and that did not happen. Once they were in it in 2016 they couldn’t turn their back on the chance at another postseason appearance. Fans would have never forgiven them.

You may be right about Shapiro being “hoodwinked”. However, I don’t see him giving Atkins the pink slip. That would mean Shapiro’s clock begins and his job security is less safe with a firing. He’s going to ride Atkins out and hope prospects develop.
