Brewers’ Brent Suter Diagnosed With Torn UCL

By Steve Adams | July 23, 2018 at 3:40pm CDT

3:40pm: The Brewers announced that Suter does indeed have a UCL tear. He’s been placed on the 10-day DL for now, and right-hander Jorge Lopez has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs in his place.

3:15pm: Brewers left-hander Brent Suter, who left yesterday’s start after three innings due to a forearm strain, has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, tweets Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. He’s likely to require Tommy John surgery.

[Related: Milwaukee Brewers depth chart]

Suter, 28, has been through a tough stretch recently, struggling to a 7.58 ERA over his past four starts (19 innings). Whether his elbow was at the source of those troubles isn’t clear, though the soft-tossing Suter hasn’t experienced much in the way of a noted velocity drop in that time.

Those four outings have ballooned Suter’s ERA from 4.15 to 4.80, but he’s been a largely serviceable piece for Milwaukee for much of the 2018 season. From April 27 through June 21, Suter logged a tidy 3.47 ERA over the life of 57 innings, and he’s posted excellent K/BB numbers all season long (84 strikeouts, 19 walks in 101 1/3 innings). He’ll drop out of a rotation that should see both Freddy Peralta and Junior Guerra return this week, joining Chase Anderson, Jhoulys Chacin and Wade Miley in manager Craig Counsell’s starting five.

If Suter requires Tommy John surgery, he’ll obviously miss the remainder of the 2018 campaign and much of the 2019 season as well. It’s a blow to the Brewers’ pitching staff and to Suter’s future as he looks to solidify himself as a regular big league contributor, though he seems likely to be retained and accrue MLB service time on the 60-day disabled list both this year and next. Suter will finish out the season with one-plus years of MLB service and won’t be eligible for arbitration until after the 2019 season, at which point he’s a lock to be a Super Two player so long as the Brewers keep him on the roster.

Milwaukee has already been linked to upgrades in the rotation and in the infield, and the loss of Suter would only further the possibility of the team adding some rotation depth. That said, it’s also unlikely that a prolonged absence for Suter will spur the Brewers’ front office into action and prompt a significant rotation upgrade.

As a Mets fan they make me sick year in and year out. Injuries and bad moves. So seeing Degrom continue to be a #1 starter with no run support makes me say trade him. I want to see this guy get 2-3 runs a game and be a 29 game winner

since about May he’s been a very useful back of the rotation starter with some atrocious defense behind him. Should be a cheap option versus more expensive options such as Happ or dare I say Degrom. Coupled with Soria and I’m sure the Brewers would consider it very much

for a team that want’s to win and doesn’t have a ace on that team shield won’t get them over the hump.
It’s either trying getting the likes of Degrom, Archer ( I know, I know overhyped on here) or wait until the august waivers and pick up someone like shields.

far cheaper trade package and coupled with bullpen help is why they would do that. He’s an innings eater and one the brewers will surely need with Suter gone. Obviously nothing is stopping them from getting Happ as well but pitching depth is 100% a major need now

Still, is 6 starts enough to write off the past two seasons plus the first 3 months of this season? An acquisition of J.A isn’t going to cost too much and if he gets going he’d slot into the top 3-4 of the non- Cleveland and Houston rotations.

It is very likely that this is just a rough stretch that he going through, I don’t know why everyone thinks he’s automatically garbage now

If he were to go to NYY, I’d rank it Sevy, CC, then Happ. Happ has both a lower ERA and Fip than Tanaka as well as a better track record.

I do think they should go after a guy who will bump down Sabathia though. Happ probably isn’t the best fit but he is easily an upgrade in that rotation.

Oh cause he’s a Blue Jay everyone should just ignore everything and dwell on his past. It doesn’t work that way like Bo and Cat said “trending down” and “dropping fast”. The dumbest thing was teams rewarding these players for what they did in the past and not looking forward.

BTW…the stats I posted included last nights game. If I was cherry picking with a motive I would have ignored that game to make him look worse.

This should make Stearns more apt into trading for Archer, not Degrom. The price on Degrom is way too high, but after seeing Archer’s start last night, he would fit in just fine at a cheaper cost. Maybe not Hiura, but package maybe Burnes + Broxton and a few midlevel prospects should get it done. We do need more than a SP though, and hopefully they go and get a 2B and/or utility player (merrifield, Dietrich)

Chris Archer seems like a natural fit for the Brewers. He would get out of that AL East where it’s easy to get torched by the Red Sox and Indians, and in previous years the O’s and Jays had high powered offenses. I remember watching Greinke go back and forth in KC between being “maybe an ace, maybe not,” to when he came to the NL, he excelled into a true ace. I could see the same thing with Archer.

The Brewers patched together a surprising effective rotation with a bunch of low ceiling try hard guys who are starting to break down. Don’t expect to see last year’s Davies back, and a little break for Guerra probably won’t help him any more than it helped Suter. This is not a recipe for an extended playoff run. Let the young guys fill out the rotation. The Brewers window isn’t closing. There are serious holes on this team that have become apparent to anyone paying any attention. Address them, don’t do a mad scramble to patch up this team for a wild card run.

Fiers was a Brewer and I actually would love to get him back and we definitely need an upgrade at short. the only question is what’s the price going to be?

Iglesias and Fiers wouldn’t cost much either… maybe a top 10 through 20 prospect and a couple young players not on the teams top 30. Besides, Fiers and Iggy can show off their World Series rings as motivation.

Hey Brew Crew fans, how bout Escobar/Lynn for Gatewood, Feliciano, and Medeiros?

I could see two of those three with some lower level prospects, but I don’t think the Brewers are interested in Lynn.
