JULY 31: The Brewers have released Miller.
JULY 28: The Brewers have designated infielder Brad Miller, per a team announcement. The move was made to make room for the newly-acquired Mike Moustakas on the active roster. At the same time, the club reinstated right-handed reliever Matt Albers from the 10-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Keon Broxton to Triple-A.
Milwaukee acquired the 28-year-old Miller earlier this season in a one-for-one swap with the Rays, to whom they sent first baseman Ji-Man Choi in exchange. That hasn’t worked out quite as they’d hoped, as Miller’s been worse in 80 plate appearances in Milwaukee than he was in Tampa Bay this season. Since coming over, he’s hit just .230/.288/.378 with an eye-popping 38.8% strikeout rate. That’s incredibly concerning considering his abnormally high .366 BABIP.
Miller’s amassed 2,505 plate appearances during his MLB career, mostly with the Mariners and Rays. All told, he owns a .239/.313/.409 batting line with 75 career home runs. Miller came up through Seattle’s system after being selected early in the second round of the 2011 draft. He put up excellent power and contact numbers throughout his minor-league career while putting up a walk rate of at least 11% at every level from Class A-Advanced up. Those gaudy totals never translated to the majors, though, and while he was a useful player at times, the organizations he was a part of were surely disappointed to never see him reach his full potential.
bucketbrew35
They’d better hope Shaw can adjust to the keystone.
brewcrewbernie
Miller was a butcher there so Shaw can’t be any worse I guess.
deweybelongsinthehall
Miller earlier this year looked good at first but unfortunately his bat isn’t sufficient for him to play there long term on a playoff team. Could however resurface as a 25th man if a team has a rash of injuries.
MilTown8888
Especially not on a team with Aguilar, Thames, Perez and Braun at 1st
mmarinersfan
Miller is a butcher anywhere. Watching him throw the ball over the head of our first baseman (Logan Morrison) playing shortstop was a joke.
stubby66
Kinda surprised Saladino is surviving the crunch
ib6ub9
next wave
MilTown8888
Still need more than once ss that is slumping at the plate on the team.
AlBundysFanClubPresident
Now all we need is cub fans to tell us Stearns f’d this up somehow, Miller is really an underrated talent and he should have either signed him long term or packaged him in a trade for a TOR starter (that isn’t even available..you know, cuz the cubs already got 4.75 ERA Hamels…)
ray_derek
You should really just worry about your own team and not the Cubs
AlBundysFanClubPresident
Says the cub fan who spends hours a day trolling brewers rumor and trade posts.
fisher40
Then stop trolling on a Brewers thread… typical cubs fan right there
Vanilla Good
ray_derek is beyond the typical Cubs fan. He’s a cancer. Someone used to post on here that he hates music and I believe it.
getright11
Great stereotyping. Like all fans arent annoying.
Gobbysteiner
All cubs fans certainly are
GoRockies
Hamels has a 2.93 ERA on the road so he’ll be a great pick up
AlBundysFanClubPresident
My point was that if the brewers had traded for Hamels cub fans would be all over here telling us how bad he and his ERA are.
egrossen
Didn’t Chatwood also have a sparkling ERA on the road before coming to the Cubs?
simschifan
It’s ok the way the Cubs are playing this week The Brewers May not need another pitcher
Sideline Redwine
LOL
twentyforty
They’ll need several more. As you know. But a team that hangs Wild Card banners like a t-shirts and trophies league doesn’t know any better. Nor do their fans.
brewcrewer
Couple years ago Cubs would have loved to hang anything
MilTown8888
Cubs are welcome to pick him up
ThatBallwasBryzzoed
Lol they just traded for him. Why not DFA that Orf dude. He has 2 hits in an many months
Doesn’t matter, Moose is replacing anyone that played 3rd most of the time.
Danthemilwfan
Orf went down already
Sideline Redwine
LOL all the Rays fans who lamented getting rid of him. I would say that at least one team had the sense to cut him–but the same team actually gave someone away for him!
All told, two guys who will be out of baseball by year’s end. Choi hits a mean single up the middle…and that’s about it.
FOmeOLS
I’ve got a question for the Brewer folks. Does acquiring moose means that they are no longer interested in the Orioles Jonathan Schoop? I don’t know how good overall Travis Shaw is, and I don’t know whether he’s considered a stopgap or if this is a genuine attempt for him to be a solid second baseman, so the question remains valid.
MilTown8888
If they’re willing to put Shaw at 2nd to accomodate moose then I’d think they’d be willing to get Schoop and play him at SS if they needed to get all 3 of those bats in the lineup on a given day. Counsell likes playing matchups too so he’d find ab’s for all of them. Moose & Shaw are lefties, Schoop is a righty.
Brewers are gonna stick with Shaw for the long haul. His contract status makes him a valuable long-term asset. If the Brewers weren’t commited to him he’d be worth a boatload as trade bait.
custardflan
The plan likely is Keston Huira is the second baseman of the future and will likely be up next year and maybe this September. Moose will probably be looking for a big contract and go free agency and then Shaw goes back to third. It’s possible Moose would stick but unlikely. Also possible Shaw gets traded since I think he has just one year left after this year on his contract. I may be wrong on that thought.
basic white dad
Essentially I would say yes. Their #1 and #10 prospects play 2nd. So I can see them playing Shaw at 2nd through the year then moving him back to 3rd in the off season. Let the Moose roam free to cash in somewhere, bring up the top prospect and move the Mayor of Ding Dong City back to the hot corner. Schoop would be a good pick up but I don’t see them trading more of the farm for him. Now anything should be for a pitcher without giving up Corbin. I don’t see a catcher available that’s a difference maker for the club.
stubby66
Here now you know you can’t say anything about Orf without Stubby saying his two cents worth. Look we gave him a chance which he rightfully earned and so far it hasn’t worked out except for his snickers deal. Get over it. I do believe that there is also now room on the 40 man roster too that will help like November call ups for Derby, Huira and maybe even Betancourt. I’m not worried too much on how this will work out because it’s called defensive replacement late in games and shifts. C’mon now the Cubs hide Schwarber pretty good why can’t the Brewers lol. It’s not the perfect scenario but it will help. I will take 25 hard working full of heart players over prima donnas any day!!!!
nickc-2
So glad Rays flushed BM
afsooner02
Meh…we gave up nothing and ended up with nothing….was worth a shot.
stubby66
Wonder if the Brewers could pick up Zack Curtis as some pitching depth
bucketbrew35
Anyone else wish they could bank $14 million plus and never reach their “potential?” I mean damn, lol.
swinging wood
You say that like he was born and given a $14M check for doing nothing.
You’re also free to work whatever talents you have to the point that somebody is willing to pay you that amount for your services. Nothing is stopping you.
dust44
Brewers have way too many infielders and outfielders and not enough pitching to win in the playoffs
Danthemilwfan
We have way to many good players, the best bullpen in. Baseball and the 9th best era amongst starters in the league with Davies back soon and Nelson maybe with a month Togo. We also can grab one of many pitchers including wheeler and degrom after they clear waivers. Baseball is not the we have one good player at that position so we are done sport. Injuries, slumps, rests. That’s what a good team still has to do with.
augold5
You really think wheeler and/or degrom are going to pass waivers?? More like Harvey would be a possible addition
daveineg
I believe the Brewers have the 5th lowest ERA among NL starting staffs with no current member of their rotation carrying an ERA above 3.69. The “group think” notion that the Brewers need a starter is because there’s really no big name at the top.; But Chase Anderson and Jhoulys Chacin are a combined 42-24 since the start of 2017. Twenty-two year old Freddie Peralta would have one of the highest K rates of all starters if he had enough innings to qualify. Junior Guerra’s been solid and Wade Miley would be top contender for comeback player of the year if not for a few minor injuries. He’s healthy now.
People also forget that they should be getting back Zach Davies who was a 17 game winner last year.
rememberthecoop
That’s incredibly
southi
I wonder if the Braves might consider replacing Flaherty with Miller. Both, have not had good seasons and posted very similar type numbers, but Miller historically has the better bat. I wouldn’t be surprised if Miller had some positive regression the rest of the season. With the defensive flexibility of Culberson and Camargo you don’t need Miller much on the dirt, just as a bat off the bench. The braves need to upgrade over Flaherty.

Resist the urge, Dipoto…. resist the urge
stevegarland1008
Romine? Really?
rememberthecoop
In his only full season (2016), he hit 30 bombs. The closest to another full season was the year prior, when he hit just 11 homers. It never ceases to amaze me when a player has an outlier season like that – outside of steroids, or injury, what makes a guy suddenly capable of great feats, never to duplicate them again?
stevegarland1008
the Mariners should claim him and dump Romine .. as bad as Miller has been he’d be a huge improvement and can play all infield positions ..
cincinnatiredlegs12
Reds should pick him up. Next Scooter Gennett right there
tony98732
Send him to Baltimore…we’ll take anything we can get at this point. Haha
