Red Sox Place Chris Sale On DL

By Connor Byrne | July 31, 2018 at 4:41pm CDT

The Red Sox announced that they’ve placed left-hander Chris Sale on the disabled list, retroactive to July 28, with mild inflammation in his pitching shoulder. The team recalled righty Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Sale’s roster spot.

Fortunately for Boston, expectations are that Sale will only miss one start, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe tweets. Assuming that proves true, this won’t be a catastrophic occurrence for Boston, which has seen Sale continue to serve as an elite starter since acquiring him from the White Sox entering 2017.

Dating back to his change in Sox, Sale has worked to a tremendous 2.56 ERA/2.31 FIP with awe-inspiring strikeout and walk rates (13.04 K/9, 1.92 BB/9) across 355 1/3 innings. Last season was the third straight 200-plus-inning campaign for Sale, who has logged a 2.04 ERA/2.08 FIP with 13.21 K/9 and 2.11 BB/9 over 141 frames this year to once again put himself in Cy Young contention. Thanks in part to the 28-year-old Sale’s brilliance, Boston has registered the majors’ best record (75-33) en route to a six-game lead in the AL East.

Whether he misses one start or more, Sale will count as the third BoSox starter on the DL, joining Eduardo Rodriguez and Steven Wright – each of whom are seemingly dealing with more severe injuries. For now, the Red Sox will continue with Rick Porcello, David Price, the just-acquired Nathan Eovaldi and Drew Pomeranz in their rotation, and they’ll utilize lefty Brian Johnson as a starter to cover for Sale’s absence. However, in the event Sale’s injury proves more serious than expected (and if Rodriguez and Wright still aren’t back), perhaps Boston will end up on the lookout for yet another trade pickup prior to the end-of-August waiver deadline.

The Sox will PAY THE PRICE when he faces the Yankees as their top starter. It will be batting practice and Price will not make it out of the 5th inning.

I actually kind of like it…I bet he isn’t hurt at all. They’re giving him a start off, which I’ve wanted them to do all year…I didn’t think it would come against the Yankees, but if they give him the Yankees start off, it prevents them from getting another look at his stuff before October hits.

Pretty interesting strategy imo, assuming he isn’t actually hurt (which I doubt he is).

Exactly two weeks ago Sale threw 100.7 MPH, hardest since his 2007 rookie year when he was a reliever. At the time I compared it to Pedro overthrowing in the 1999 All-Star Game, which caused the same thing … shoulder inflammation resulting in a DL stint for Pedro. There’s no doubt in my mind this is 100% the exact same situation.

This from Fangraphs: “In a separate excerpt, it’s shown that Martinez thought he knew how he developed [shoulder] inflammation in the first place: Martinez said his problem might have stemmed from overthrowing in the All-Star Game, when he started at Fenway Park and struck out five of the six batters he faced to earn MVP honors..”

According to Sale, he started feeling it his “last couple starts”. Guess how many starts he’s had since the All-Star Game.

If you want to get technical, I never said the injury is 100% related as I’m not in a position to make such a definitive statement. I’m 100% convinced it’s at least partially related, based on valid comparisons and especially timing. But nobody from the Red Sox wants to hear that or give that as a reason, so they’ll probably try to blame it on something like a change in how he grips the curve or whatever.

I’m not looking for any points and I actually agree with what you’re talking about. I’m 100% on board with the idea that single pitches like that can be the cause of injury.

There is however doubt in my mind that it’s the cause here and that was the only part of your comment I disagreed with.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to what we are convinced, we both have a right to say what we think … so it’s all good. In Pedro’s case, I don’t believe that any doctor or team member came out and said that was the cause. Pedro is the only one that said it. Doesn’t make him right or wrong either, because it’s just his opinion too. He was convinced that was the reason, and most people agreed with him.

If you were his treating doctor and made that statement I’d think it was ridiculous.

Since you aren’t, I don’t know what word best describes your comment. (I’m assuming you aren’t his doctor, if you are I apologize, and your comment remains ridiculous).

Well the Yankees better catch Boston in August because after August the Red Sox have a much easier schedule in September and a lot more home games. So no as usual you are wrong Mikeyank not two months the next month August if the Yankees haven’t caught them by then probably over but don’t let things like facts get in your way.

      1) Win walk-off 13 inning pitchers duel against first place Phillies
      2) Push lead to 6 games
      3) Trade next to nothing for excellent defensive 2nd baseman, exactly what they needed
      4) Gave their ace a week vacation (I hear he’s heading to Smugglers Notch, ‘to rest’)

      Bring on the Yankees!

If the Red Sox were engaged in any kind of significant trade for a starter, they wouldn’t have weakened their negotiating position by putting Sale on the DL today. They would’ve waited to close the deal first.

How about a sling? How about favoring his arm? How about the slightest look of sorenes? How about any indication that he would need surgery that would put him out for 18 months?

And again the tear would have to move down his arm for him to need TJ surgery.

I’d be angry and try to blame others if I said something that stupid too. Having a tantrum about it and pretending that a dictionary or an education will make you sound like less of a fool doesn’t really work unless you’re intimidating children.

Don’t feel bad. Everyone has a brainfart once in awhile. Just accept it and hide your shame instead of twisting yourself in knots trying to make it sound like you aren’t a complete idiot.

He gets amped up to face the Yankees and won’t hold anything back so maybe they don’t won’t him letting it lose like that at least that’s what I hope. If he comes back after the 10 days only misses one start then the Sox probably gamed the 10 day DL.

With Sale sitting the Red Sox do not have even one reliable starter. As someone has suggested already give him all the rest he needs even if it is to the middle of September. The rest of the chumps or even their grandmothers could cover things with this offence.

“Mild inflammation.” With this guy’s mechanics, I’m surprised that his arm hasn’t completely dislodged from his body.

Every time I watch this guy pitch, I feel like I need to be put on the disabled list. God, it looks painful.

I think him getting injured will start to become a trend. You can only get away with those terrible mechanics for so long.

The idea that the red sox are doing this intentionally to rest Sale is ridiculous. I’m a Yankees fan, but from what I’ve heard of Sale he is a gamer who would not want to sit out against the Yankees. If this was Price I would say you’re right, but Sale wants to pitch and there no way the Sox would sit their best pitcher against the Yankees to get rest. you sit him against the orioles or rays, not the Yankees.

On the other side of it, my guess is its just what it is being billed as, mild inflammation. He’ll be back in a week or two.
