Brewers Designate Eric Sogard For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 5, 2018 at 3:28pm CDT

The Brewers announced Thursday that they’ve reinstated Tyler Saladino from the 10-day disabled list and created a spot on the active roster by designating struggling second baseman Eric Sogard for assignment. The move leaves Milwaukee’s 40-man roster at a total of 39 players.

Sogard, 32, re-signed with the Brewers last October after turning in a quality season at the dish and in the field. The 2018 season has been a disaster for Sogard, though, as he’s batted just .134/.241/.165 through 113 trips to the plate. And while he’s known as a strong defender at second base, he’s spent more time this season at shortstop, where he hasn’t rated out as well defensively.

Sogard did bat .273/.393/.378 through 299 plate appearances last season, but his overall body of work in the Majors — a .238/.309/.314 slash in 1743 plate appearances — suggests that he’s unlikely to return to those heights. Both Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating peg Sogard as a strong defender at second base and at third base, and he could continue to provide infield depth for the Crew if he ultimately clears waivers.

Hoping he does accept the assignment so he can get his swing back. He is a good person and who knows maybe he can help in September

He had that ridiculous start last season, but since then he’s back to being the player that the career numbers really show he is. Great guy, great clubhouse personality, but I wouldn’t count on him “getting his swing back”.

He has been incredibly unlucky this year (.173 BABIP vs .271 career) but he is an average all around player with a very good eye and basically no power when he’s at his best. As much as I like the guy, he does not deserve a roster spot on a playoff-caliber team. The Brewers’ clubhouse will miss him but carry on just fine without him.

Same thing will happen with the other lightning-in-a-bottle guys like Saladino, Kratz, Orf, Miller…all small sample successes lately with little to no track record to support it.

I agree with all of those but Miller, he does have the track record to support it

Shields? How is he even an improvement over what they have? Sure he’s had 2 good starts in a row, but he’s only 2 weeks removed from that 4.2 inning 8 ER debacle against Oak. And his ERA on the year is still sitting north of 4 and he’d be moving to a much more hitter friendly park. And I can’t see them giving up what Balt is going to want for Machado when they have no chance at resigning him. Think its more likely that they make a run at Escobar.

Lol. Shields. If a team is desperately perusing the trash heap, I would target The Dark Knight over “big” Game James. Yolmer Sanchez would be a nice under the radar addition for a contending NL team.

he has a 4.12 era which would translate well in the NL not facing the DH.

You can dismiss the Shields rumors for this reason and this reason only. Pat Murphy had him as interim manager after Bud Black was fired and he has a very hard time dealing with him. So bad that Shields would bark at him every time he came to grab the call from him when he was getting rocked, so Murphy allowed him a longer leash because of it and in Shields last start against the Mariners in 16’ he gave up 10 rubs in an inning and a third I believe and Ron Fowler (the owner of the Padres) aired Shields out on the radio for tanking and not giving 100%, likely stemming from the longer leash and Murphy ceding to him.

Long winded response, but I think Craig Counsell is smart enough to take the advice of passing on a guy who very slightly improves your team, most managers don’t have the luxury of having a bench coach who was their college coach. It’s almost like having your dad with you to bounce ideas off at work, take his advice on Shields, Craig. Hard Pass.

Wish there was an edit function on the mobile app for iPhone, annoying typos you don’t catch until after you post would be nice to edit on here afterwards.

I have to hand it to Sogard. It’s very tough to get 113 at-bats in the big league with that slash line. If you hit .134/.241./.165 the odds are likely overwhelming that you will be unemployed way before you get anywhere near 100 at-bats. So… congrats, I guess.

Sogard can always hang his hat on 2017 as that magical season. 2018? Eh, that’s when reality came home to roost. This is the guy OAK gave up on a couple years ago. This is who he is.

Scooter needed a change of scenery, highly doubt that scooter would put up the numbers he’s putting up had he stayed put in Milwaukee, he would’ve have been platooning with Villar
