Medical Concerns In Machado Trade Talks Between Orioles, Dodgers Are “All But Addressed”

By Jeff Todd | July 18, 2018 at 5:31pm CDT

5:26pm: It “looks like the Machado trade to the Dodgers will go through,” tweets Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Barring any last-minute hiccups (Kubatko notes that there are some “final points to review”), Orioles will indeed get five players back in the deal. He goes on to say that the medical concerns that appeared to be holding up the deal earlier have been “all but addressed”, noting that they were not a deal-breaker for the Orioles.

Likewise, Jim Bowden of ESPN tweets that the Machado deal should be officially completed this evening. A source close to the transaction tells Bowden that the medicals are “no longer an issue”, and confirms that Diaz is still the headliner in the package.

That said, it’s important to note that the trade is not yet official. As J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group points out on Twitter, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes’ lineup card for this evening shows Gavin Lux as the leadoff hitter, while fellow Machado-package prospect Dustin May is listed as the starting pitcher.

3:41pm: There’s a “possible snag” in the reported agreement between the Dodgers and Orioles that would send star infielder Manny Machado out west, according to Steve Phillips of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (via Twitter). Precise details aren’t known, but it seems that some concerns arose in the physicals of the prospects that would go to Baltimore in the swap.

That said, the new wrinkle doesn’t by any means preclude the deal from ultimately being tweaked and coming together. Fancred’s Jon Heyman tweets that the holdup doesn’t involve outfielder Yusniel Diaz, the centerpiece of the return going to Baltimore. Rather, it’s an issue with a more “complementary” piece, per Heyman, which creates more optimism that the trade will ultimately be agreed upon and pushed through as had been widely reported.

While all indications are that the two organizations came together for an All-Star Game deal involving Machado, there has, of course, yet to be any formal announcement. And many have cautioned not to assume anything until all the boxes are checked. The Orioles, after all, have blown up several deals — trades and free-agent agreements — over issues identified in physicals. Baltimore’s medical medical standards are notoriously stingy, and today’s reports only serve as the latest entry in a fairly lengthy history of such hiccups.

If the snag ultimately proves to be insurmountable, then it could be that the Machado situation will return to the forefront of the trade deadline market development. It has seemed for several days that Machado would head out of the All-Star break in a different uniform, leaving about two weeks for other movement to occur. That doesn’t appear quite as certain now, though, which means that clubs who’d believed themselves to be runners up will likely hold off on making other deals.

To that end, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweeted last night that the Brewers’ offer was considered by the Orioles to be the second-strongest proposal they received. The Phillies, Diamondbacks, Yankees and Indians are among the other teams that were prominently connected to Machado.

The O’s always do this? 4 players have failed Orioles physicals. Balfour, Colvin, Pagan and Gallardo. They saved over $10 million on Gallardo and the other players only Balfour played after the failed physical (2 more seasons). Pagan and Colvin didn’t play again at all.

I doubt teams are willing to put their best prospects through a medical with another team’s doctors, if there’s a 50/50 chance that the trade isn’t happening.

you guys are both wrong but come on, saying maybe a top 15? nobody is going to take you seriously if you go really extreme to make a point. if we include defense and not just go off fantasy numbers than its safe to say that lindor, correa, seager, trea turner, bogarets, and maybe even brandon crawford might all be better all around shortstops than machado but he is much closer to being a top 3 shortstop than he is a top 15. i would love for you to name a dozen shortstops who are all around better. i named 5, i could maybe let trevor story, didi gregorious, jean segura, darby swanson, addison russell and the great defensive shortstop on the angels im drawing a blank on all slide but after that your getting into the names of alcides escobar and tim anderson and company

Interesting article, a couple of years old though and it doesn’t conclude that the Orioles are significantly more likely to not clear a player through medicals, only that they have a reputation for looking harder at them.

The player (more likely players) who failed the physical in the Britton deal aren’t known publicly, so we really don’t know if the deal was “botched” or if the O’s had legitimate concerns–as they have have had in practically every other case..

There are easily 10 better defensive SS in the league now. What makes him top 5 is his bat so don’t think for one moment that his desire to play SS over 3b is better for the team. Its better only for him because he wants to go down in history as one of the best SS ever. Derek Jeter was an average fielder with an average arm what made him top 5 and HOF was his bat. Ripken’s final years were embarrassing at SS and his bat finally went away but they kept him there day after day. He made All Star games with a .220 batting average. Baltimore has a history of doing things the most backward ass ways and this is why they sit at the bottom of American League East with no hope of leaving the bottom tier anytime soon. Just think about it, for the next 5 years do you have any hope of making the playoffs? NOT A CHANCE IN HAITI! Horrible farm system, horrible management team, stubborn owner. He should sell the team to give you all hope because its bad and can only get worse.

Huh? I read the article you linked. It seemed entirely inconclusive on the main point of whether the Orioles are nixing trades due to medicals significantly more often than other teams (more scrutiny not withstanding). You seem to have found something in it that I missed, so why not cut to the quick and tell me what it is?

Orioles are infamous for that “due diligence.”

I’ll give the Orioles credit for Grant Balfour (at the time O’s widely ridiculed for having failed physical)

But Grant Balfour was not a prospect back then.

You are really delusional if you think this is Baltimore doing Due Diligence. Every trade they try to make they mysteriously come up with medical issues of the prospects. This has been happening for years & I don’t understand how you O’s fans can continue to take this crap. They should have traded him two years ago when it became obvious that they were not going to extend him. Of course he was not going to sign with you all in Free Agency and it was obvious two years ago you could to compete with Boston and NYY so you wasted a great talent, didn’t trade him for top value and now with the last chance to salvage anything, you are going to blow the trade for “medical issues”. JUST PLAIN DUMB!

I think the Brewers dodged a bullet..that’s not the kind of trade that Sterns promised us. I believe he said “no rentals, only controllable players” with the goal of building a consistent contender. I don’t mind moving some prospects but a bidding war for a 2½ month hitter isn’t my ideas odd a good idea. Often the best auctions are the ones you lose.

I agree with this. I actually think that Machado is like the 9th or 10th best in the entire league at SS. Now 3rd base, that’s a different story. That’s the only red flag I’ve seen about Machado and his determination to call himself “a shortstop” He’s not. He’s a 3rd baseman and a damn good one too.

This year yes. Why trade Andujar who’s an all star 3B in the future for 2 months of Manny. Did you see what the Dodgers were giving up? Nowhere near a player of Andujar’s talent. They were giving up one top 100 prospect that’s it

Andujar isn’t a very good 3rd basemen when it comes to defense. In fact, he’s one of the worse. On plays that 3rd basemen make 40-60%, Andujar had made ZERO % up to last week.

You mean Frazier that they’re currently destroying by calling up and sending down a week later. Im not bashing Cashman, he is a great GM.. But Machado would really help this team. He is a better bat and defense compared to Andujar. This team needs pitching and I think theres a better chance to get a better pitcher than Happ or Hamels with Andujar in the deal .

I’m a yankee fan and it’s comments like this that make the rest of us look bad. Why would the yanks trade Andújar for a rental? And what makes you so sure they can flip Machado for a “young” SP? Yeah Miggy isn’t the best defender but he’s not hurting the Yanks and his offense is above average. You’re a clown. Cashman has made great deals, trust the process

You screwed up by getting mad at Cashman.

Machado is not what they need. If Machado’s price drops and he falls into their lap the way Stanton did, fine, but I would not give up anything of serious value if I were the Yankees. Andujar and Didi are doing well enough at 3rd and SS.

As for “are the yankees better with…” you’re asking the wrong question.

      The real question is:

Are the Yankees better off trading Andujar for a strong SP or for Machado? That question is pretty easily answered. Because to land Machado right now, it would likely take the same kind of prospects they would use for a starter.

They’re either or dumb or dense, but likely both. Take what you can get man. Jeez Louise. You have a superstar player on the worst team in baseball who is out of contract in just 3 months. You’re getting quantity and it’s already a given that 2/3 of the prospects you get probably won’t work out, but that’s just because that’s the average for the game. Prospects miss or get hurt. Take what you can get. Don’t mess this up. It’s almost like the Orioles don’t baseball. SMH

This is all SOP for O’s and a couple of other teams. I doubt there is a professional baseball player, or college, or high school player who does not have some type of injury that will be found in medical history or examination. The O’s know this and it is in its negotiating playbook how to use that information and attempt to extract additional consideration from teams. Fortunately EVERY other MLB team knows this so negotiates with those teams accordingly.

Machado is their only big piece that can pull a major prospect haul so they have to get this right. Furthermore, I’m certain lots of other clubs run into snags in completing trades due to physicals as well. The O’s just seem to get their information leaked to the media more.

I think they want him, but know where to stop. They know they have as good a chance as anyone once he reaches free agency and aren’t willing to give up the farm for 2 months

Yeah your right. This is all about trying to get the Phillies to up their offer. You also probably think the song “You’re So Vain” is about the Phillies too.

I think the orioles do this because they like the attention. They have the entire baseball world talking about one of the worst teams in the past decade. That’s brilliant marketing right there. What’s that old saying? There’s no such thing as bad publicity. The Orioles are geniuses at that.

I hate the Orioles FO, so much. They should have got 3 pitchers for Manny to begin with, now their stupid medical team gets in the way again.

(I like the team though, iconic name/colors/franchise players etc, I don’t have anything against any of the their players, other than they’re almost all the wrong players who should be on the team)

If the O’s medical staff were wrong about any of the players they turned down for medical reasons then this would be laughable. As it is, its just expected. This deal will get done by the end of the day.

Maybe it’s just that the players don’t want to play for the poorly run Orioles so they make up an injury to avoid being traded

I can only imagine your frustration; but, I think this will get worked out. It’s probably a pitcher (Dustin May) and the Dodgers will end up allowing the O’s to select another pitcher (Ferguson, Kremer, Cooper). Diaz could be a very solid corner outfielder. I do hope it works out for the sake of the O’s fans. If its not the Dodgers, another team will come through with a decent package. Machado is a tremendous talent and he needs bring a player(s) that will meaningfully contribute in the future.

Have the O’s ever missed on one of the players they turned down for medical reasons? Let me ask that another way, have any of the players they turned down ever not had a major injury?

In all seriousness, how many outfielders do the Orioles need?

Austin Hays was supposed to be pretty good and a possible starting right fielder for years to come and now the O’s trade for a RF’er?

    SMH

Also, I am not surprised about the medicals, but I am glad it’s almost over

There is certainly hypocrisy regarding medicals – there are a huge number of people saying “Oh, BAL needs to just do it, stop being difficult”, but then when something like the SD-BOS trade/injury fallout happens, people are quick to jump on the fact that there were injuries hidden deliberately, how the Padres were dodgy and how Boston didn’t pick up on the problems.

Well, here’s a Team that is picking up on problems.

Absolutely no one burying Baltimore here, will be here putting their hand up when one of those players ends up on the sideline and saying “Oh, they were probably right to have reservations”.

And it’s not like Baltimore hasn’t been right before. Terrible organization, terribly run – but they have hit the nail regarding injuries.

It’s cool to make fun of them, but that’s just people getting their kicks on an easy target.

Orioles have one of the most stringent medical exams in the league. That is their prerogative. There is no guarantee that the next package down from the Dodgers would pass medical muster. At the end of the day, the team needs to get more for Manny than a draft pick when he’s out the door.
