Yankees Place Aroldis Chapman On DL, Claim Chris Rabago From Rockies

By Steve Adams | August 22, 2018 at 3:56pm CDT

The Yankees announced that they’ve placed closer Aroldis Chapman on the 10-day disabled list with inflammation in his left knee and recalled righty Chance Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees also claimed minor league catcher Chris Rabago off waivers from the Rockies and optioned him to Double-A Trenton.

Chapman exited last night’s game with a trainer after throwing his sixth pitch. He’d been displaying diminished velocity prior to that, sitting at about 96 mph with his heater. He’s headed to see a doctor on Friday, tweets Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, though the hope is that he’ll only require a minimal 10-day stint on the shelf. With Chapman sidelined, the Yankees will likely to turn to either Zach Britton or David Robertson to finish off games in save situations, though manager Aaron Boone has not yet tipped his hand as to who’ll be his primary stopper.

As for Rabago, he’ll join the Yankees organization after struggling through a down season in Double-A this year. A 13th-round selection by the Rockies back in 2014, Rabago played his way onto the 40-man roster when he batted .272/.350/.393 through 358 plate appearances in Class-A Advanced last season. In 2018, however, he’s managed just a .213/.292/.361 slash through 229 plate appearances. Rabago, who turned 25 back in April, has thrown out 34 percent of would-be base thieves in his minor league career.

Betances has been lights out lately. Robertson and Britton have the most experience. I’d say Robertson will likely be option 1, than Betances, Britton, Green. Britton has been wildly inconsistent since the trade.

Robertson and Britton have been disasters this year. Green has been terrible in the 2nd half and Betances is not a closer, Steinbrenner’s words.

      Pray for blow outs?

2 bad games? Dude leads the team’s relief corps with 7 home runs allowed,is second on the team in blown saves, and had those “like 2 bad games” after someone on Twitter pointed out he is keeping pinetar on his belt. He grabs it after every pitch.

Robertson has a WHIP under 1, and averaging more than a strikeout an inning. Lol, that’s a “disaster” to you? Exaggerate much?

Green’s (“terrible”) actual stats the last seven days:
        5 IP
        0.00 ERA
        0.86 WHIP

        Last 31 days:
        13 IP
        2.77 ERA

Also, can you share the link where Steinbrenner said that about Betances? I know Randy Levine said that after his arbitration case, wasn’t aware Steinbrenner said it as well.

They always lacked depth and aren’t making upgrades when they need to. This is why you don’t hoard prospects while contending. But make no mistake, why is Neil Walker in RF? It’s not the manager this time, the Yankees FO is really blowing it this season, although a lot of stuff is bad luck, like Neil Walker over a guy anyone could have like like say, Nick Martini or Jose Bautista, seems pretty clear cut, but just not in practice.

Definitely won’t be surprised to see Oakland both end up with more wins than the Astros and Yankees. Oaklands soft schedule has them primed with the 2nd most wins in baseball, and they own a 4-2 season record against the team who is #1.

The Yankees probably have the softest schedule left making them almost a lock to make the playoffs. It looks to me like Oakland, Houston, and Seattle fight for the last two playoff spots one of those three will be the wildcard and one will win the division.

The Yankees have 11 games against contenders, A’s have 12, it’s negligible and both have it soft, thats why that 3 game series in Oakland might be critical to both teams. I think Oakland is playing better than NYY right now and will win 2 or 3 of them.

“I think Oakland is playing better than NYY right now” keywords being “right now” things most definitely can change, and usually do. Thing is they aren’t playing the A’s right now, and the outcome won’t come down to what you think. That’s why they play the games.

Why is Neil Walker in RF? Because Judge and Frazier are on the DL and Stanton has a bad hammy. I can’t think of any team that has enough top flight outfielders to handle three guys unable to play RF.

Barring a collapse by the Red Sox, winning the division is out of reach. So it doesn’t make sense for the Yankees to trade decent prospects or blow past the cap. The still have the talent to win a WC spot so their mission now is to just get everyone healthy for the playoffs.

Justin-Brad..The Mariners are 9 games back in the loss column from the Yankees, and the A’s are 5 back. Fangraphs gives the Yankees a 100% chance of making the playoffs. The Yankees would have to stumble in an historic way for your scenarios.

and those Fangraphs %’s think the A’s have a 0% chance at making the World Series, which is odd considering they’re playing the best baseball out of all the contenders.

“Fangraphs gives the Yankees a 100% chance of making the playoffs.”

Either you are mis-stating FG’s position or FG is mistaken. You simply cannot give a “100% chance” until and unless it has been clinched. Even if the Yankees were one game away from clinching a playoff spot with twenty games left to play their playoff chances would have to be less than 100%. Might be 99.6% or so but as long as there is the mathematical possibility of not making the playoffs it can’t be 100%.

It was 100% on 8-22, with the loss last night FanGraphs now has the Yankees at 99.9% to make the playoffs, giving them a 95.2% to win the WC. If you have any questions then simply go to FanGraphs, and compare your math with theirs to see who’s flawed. Oh by the way those stats for 8-22 were reported on MLB Network yesterday.

I agree with you, 100% doesn’t make sense. But the Red Sox are currently at 100% to make the playoffs even though it’s not a mathematical certainty. Seems flawed to me.

Has to be, Mr. Smuckers. If something happens only once in a couple hundred years it still happens and still must be accounted for in your calculation. That’s one of the biggest points Nate Silver made in his book. Otherwise you risk getting squashed by a “fat tail”, a contingency you ignore due to its rarity only to have it pop up and wipe you out. Know how “put” options work?

Yeah sure, a 10 day stint after he lost 10 mph on his fb, just like how Judge was so barely injured he was totally going to come back earlier than expected. Right. Totally going to happen.

I agree. Betances has great numbers but he’s one of those guys who can’t close. Does anyone else remember the 2016 home sweep at the hands of the Red Sox ? Betances was the “closer” after Miller and Chapman left and he was a disaster. He killed an excellent start from Tanaka. That was the day that their ‘16 season ended after an enchanting August…
