Why wouldn’t the Padres spend all that $ on another outfielder? They already spent a bunch of money on Eric Hosmer despite already having a working 1st baseman signed to an unmovable contract in Wil Myers and one of the game’s better 1st base prospects in Josh Naylor.
I think the cubs would like to move a pitcher in a perfect world but how do you do that? Drew smyly coming off surgery. Only one year on his deal, hard to know what you have there. Jon Lester has too much money to be moved without eating a sizeable chunk. Tyler chatwood isnt going anywhere. 25mm left on a contract that shouldn’t have been a dollar over that in the first place. Darvish owed over 100mm and didn’t do anything this year. Quintana? Coming off a down year. Hendricks? Relatively cheap and controllable in a rotation of guys who are over priced or question marks. That leaves mike Montgomery available to trade. He certainly has value but he’s also the only guy in the rotation with significant BP experience. I don’t think this a situation that gets clearer by trading. I think chatwood is the guy they’d like to see go. He’s the source of the problem. I don’t see anyone taking a flier on him for well less than half of what he’s owed. Justin Wilson is a FA so that leaves room for either smyly or Monty to step into that kind of role and the other can be a swingman.
