Gary Sanchez To Undergo Shoulder Surgery

By Steve Adams | November 7, 2018 at 6:49pm CDT

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez will undergo surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder this offseason, general manager Brian Cashman tells reporters at the GM Meetings in Carlsbad, Calif. (Twitter links via Lindsey Adler of The Athletic). The shoulder has bothered him since 2017 and been treated with cortisone shots in the past, but Sanchez aggravated it while working out in Tampa this past week.

The timeline for Sanchez’s recovery is about three months, and the current projection is that he’ll be ready for Opening Day. That timeline will push Sanchez’s recovery right up to the point at which pitchers and catchers are set to report to Spring Training. Any setbacks or delays, then, could call into question his availability for the beginning of the regular season. In the event that he’s not ready, however, Cashman indicated the team is comfortable with Austin Romine stepping up as the primary catcher early in the 2019 season (Twitter link via SNY’s Andy Martino).

Sanchez, who’ll turn 26 in December, endured multiple DL stints in 2018 for a different injury — a right groin strain that limited him to 89 games and 374 plate appearances in 2018. It seems safe to assume that the groin injury, paired with the now-known left shoulder troubles, played a significant role in the downturn in Sanchez’s prodigious offensive output. After hitting a combined .284/.354/.568 with 53 home runs and 32 doubles through 754 plate appearances between 2016-17, Sanchez slumped to a .186/.291/.406 slash line this past season.

The conversation starts with trout and ohtani and depends on how many STL years of pujols Anaheim is willing to kick in.

His trade value was hurt more by his .180 BA than any surgery. In fact I’d say his surgery and reveal of a nagging injury would (if anything) actually improve his trade value.

hey the Yankees need to go after Sandoval to be the back up catcher. If he is behind that plate it may keep his weight issues under control!!! Go get him should be able to block very well.

Maybe he’ll hit .201 next year. Actually, he should be working on weighing 201 lbs. next year. If he was in better shape, he would have been a force to reckon with!

BA doesn’t matter, and it especially doesn’t matter for a catcher. Nobody running a baseball team in 2018 looks at BA ever I can guarantee you that.

No judge and Severino should be untouchable. If moving the other two makes them more competitive or a better team, they should be traded

Torres either strikes out or hit a home run. He crumbled under pressure in the post season. Andujar is a better all around athlete

Hey Ray, are you telling me that your decision is formed around one post season in his age 21?

I think it would be wise to buy a larger size thong as your brain is being robbed of blood flow because it is stuck under your cup.

This surgery should really only benefit Sanchez. A debridement surgery shouldnt cause too much concern. Its not like TJ for a pitcher.

Would a Cervelli for Didi trade make sense? A Sanchez/Cervelli catching tandem is a great combo and they provide injury insurance for each other since its unlikely either would stay healthy for 140+ games.

The Pirates could then try to give Didi an extension this offseason at a discounted rate due to his TJS rehab and have their shortstop for the remaining years of Archer and Taillon’s arbitration.

After a handful of years, Sanchez is what he has shown us… when healthy he can slug with the best of them. Defensively, he has the physical tools to be the best catcher in the game, BUT his willingness to get it done on defense is just NOT there and he plays at a well below average level. His offense simply can NOT overcome his defensive shortcomings. I personally would love to see the Yankees trade him.

I love slevin’s non biased non prejudicial perspective.

Do YA think that surgery to his non throwing shoulder which has been problematic for some time might have affected his fluid movement of his glove shoulder?

What dopes. Why don’t you Yankee wannabe geniuses switch over to the cubbies and attack players with a few years under their belt and have away their post season?
