Angels Designate Luke Farrell, Announce Matt Harvey Deal

By Jeff Todd | December 21, 2018 at 4:53pm CDT

The Angels have designated right-hander Luke Farrell for assignment, per a club announcement. His 40-man spot will go to Matt Harvey, whose previously reported one-year contract is now official.

The 27-year-old Farrell has thrown 44 1/3 innings over the past two seasons, managing only a 5.28 ERA. He did show jumps in his strikeout (11.2 K/9) and swinging-strike (11.4%) rates last year, though clearly teams view him mostly as a depth arm at this point. Farrell worked to a 3.64 ERA in a dozen Triple-A starts in 2018, which he spent with the Cubs.

Why, because he’s John Farrell’s son?

Yes he is. His debut was with the Royals against the Red Sox…when his dad was managing the Sox

His ML debut was against the Twins. The Red Sox allowed John Farrell to miss the Red Sox game to be in attendance.

Negative because I want them to get rid of a garbage pitcher and an over rated utility player?

Nope. Negative because of you’re inability to recognize that both players can be quality assets to the team. You’re negative.

Cozart is owed way too much money right now. He can be a good bench player. Eppler needs a 3rd baseman who can hit, not that they are easy to find. Fletcher needs 500 at bats to prove if he can be a long term solution at second base.

Cozart being DFA’d doesn’t make sense

LMAO. They aren’t going to designate a guy that was hurt last year and an All-Star the year before. Some comments are just plain comical.

No what’s comical is that fact that Cozart has had one good year in his career. Cozart was a .250 hitter playing half his games in a band box. And barely was hitting in the .220’s when he got hurt. I would rather let Ward have that playing time at third. And Fletcher have the playing time at second. The Angels are not contenders for anything in 2019. Let the young players play and see what they can do. Ramirez was second on the team innblown saves. So forgive me for not trusting a guy with an era over 4.

We have 7 or 8 rotation pieces now with Ramirez and Ohtani still to come later this year and next. Maybe a couple more pitching tweaks and a catcher. Interested to see if Calhoun is still being offered as a trade piece.

They wouldn’t get much and would have to eat a big chunk of his salary.

I think last year at the plate was a blip. He’s an awesome gold glove defender and I think a good lefty lead off hitter so I think he would be a good fit for someone if we decide to let him go. I believe he’s worth a decent bull pen piece in return.

Angels fans have become the most self hating group I’ve ever seen. Give Cozart a chance, sheesh.

Angels fans are not self hating. There are several trolls who pose as Angels fans but say nothing good about the team or its players.

Package Cozart , Calhoun, and some prospects for Arenado or Thor. Let’s hope Eppler
