East Notes: Mets, Phils, Harper, Yanks Pitching, Dozier

By Jeff Todd | January 16, 2019 at 9:57pm CDT

“Come get us.” That’s the message that Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen had today for the rest of baseball, and particularly the club’s division rivals, as MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports. While other organizations in the NL East surely also feel optimistic about their own recent roster improvements, that created an opening for the hard-charging rookie exec to dish out some further smack talk: “There’s a lot of good teams. … I hope that those guys continue to get themselves better because we’ll go slug it out with them every day.” Otherwise, as he introduced Jed Lowrie today, Van Wagenen suggested that he may be more or less done tinkering with the position-player mix, though he didn’t rule out further action. On the pitching side, it’s less of a complete picture, though the newly minted baseball ops leader did laud the “depth” the organization has already assembled, citing players such as lefty Hector Santiago and Rule 5er Kyle Dowdy. Certainly, a few additional arms wouldn’t hurt, though there’s no denying the talent the Mets have assembled at the back of the bullpen and, especially, in the rotation.

More from the eastern divisions …

  • The most recent chatter on Bryce Harper has focused on his ongoing dalliance with the Phillies, due in no small part to a recent, in-person meeting. Jon Heyman of Fancred tweets that Harper “hit it off” with Phils skipper Gabe Kapler, which perhaps represents a notable, though unquestionably secondary, factor in the still-developing situation. Though the word long has been that the Philadelphia organization has at least a slight preference for Manny Machado over Harper, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that the latter may actually be a better match. Lauber ticks through a variety of ways in which that’s arguably the case, ranging from Harper’s fit in the lineup and on the roster to broader considerations such as marketing.
  • Even as they look for a deal to send out starter Sonny Gray, the Yankees are seeking another rotation asset, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred (Twitter link). It stands to reason that such a player would be a depth piece, whether a veteran on a minor-league deal or an optionable hurler acquired via trade, or perhaps a swingman type who’d initially work out of the bullpen. After all, even without Gray, the Yanks appear to have five rotation spots accounted for. It’s certainly understandable that the club would like to account for any starts that end up being missed by that unit, however. Otherwise, the New York org is said still to be looking at the relief market.
  • Veteran second baseman Brian Dozier weighed some multi-year offers before he landed with the Nationals, as Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com writes. He and his wife ultimately preferred the fit in D.C., says Dozier, who says he spoke with Kurt Suzuki and Josh Willingham about their experiences in the nation’s capital before making his decision. Dozier ended up securing a $9MM guarantee for one season of work; in all likelihood, he’d have taken a lower annual salary if he went with a lengthier pact. The opportunity will also give him a shot, then, at returning to the market in search of a bigger contract. For both Dozier and the Nats, the bottom-line question is whether the 2018 season is merely a blip or the start of a decline for a player who had been a star-level performer for several prior seasons. Dozier says he’s fully recovered from a knee issue that may have led to “some bad habits,” calling his rough campaign “a good learning year.”

Would SF take Jeff Gray take for MadBum… if the Yankees are given a window to work out an extension. Would the Yankees even want Madbum. Would Madbum sign an extension to play with the Yankees?

Harper wants to be baseball legend. Face of baseball! People say Trout Trout Trout. But Harper sees himself.
Discount for Yankee jersey, play under brightest lights, post season almost every year? Maybe, maybe, maybe! Then every Harper swing, hit or miss, gets three front page stories, while Trout asteroid numbers are a blip on back page of Anaheim gazette.

If Harper wants to be a legend he’ll sign with a team and deliver two WS championships. If he does that with the Phillies, he’d be the first player to accomplish that feat in team history.

If Harper wants to play for any SPECIFIC TEAM, f’it whatever reason, darn skippy Boras will do what Harper says… period. Remember Arod being willing to restructure his contract and take less money to go to Boston? The MLBPA blocked it but it was their intent nonetheless. I don’t know how badly either Manny or Harper want to be Yankees but i could see a scenario like 5/$175 with a 2 year opt-out or opt-in (extension for Yankees) being viable if the offers they have are for more years but less aav like 10/$250 or 8/$200 from less desirable teams.

I think that the “re-enter the market next year” strategy is a mistake. I can’t think of one player it’s worked for except injury recovery guys. I also think the market shift is here to stay unless the next CBA changes it somehow.

It might work for a player with a QO but that’s about it.

      This guy should be extended.

      1) He convinced the Wilpons to spend (more than usual, much more than their typical Wilpon anemic standard)

      2) He gave Mets’ fans hope. The newfound confidence transpired in them – despite owners- is sight to behold.

Those are not good reasons to extend a guy. You extend a guy for doing well, not for for “convincing Wilpons to spend” (even though they were already spending prior: 12th highest payroll on opening day in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons) and “selling” that your team will do well. No wonder you think Maccagnan should stay as Jets GM simply because he drafted Darnold (which is such a no-brainer move to make). You need to base GM performance on team performance amd stop prioritizing whether a GM is good or bad off these foolish reasons. Its almost like you are one of the beat writers for a team that is just trying to say some vague politically correct statement about a the team so that they appear level headed.

This isnt to say that the Mets will do bad or that the GM is doing a bad job, for that remains to be seen.

Those are idiotic reasons for an extension. They’re payroll hasn’t gone up much at all. Fans would rather have an organization do things smart so the team can have sustained success.

He didn’t spend much more this year. Its all future spending. This year Familia only 6.6 mill goes to 16.6 the last yea rof contract. Tradeded away 24 mill of contracts for Cano plus 20 mill for a gain of 20 mill this year.Wright off books this year. That means this year Mets not spending so much.Lets see what the Mets do down the road

Let’s see how long it takes for Mutt and Jeff to fire Wagon Wheel. He skirted death with some dumb offers that were not accepted (Dodgers catcher who was not worth the money)!and time will tell how long it takes for the Sliding Cano deal from blowing up.

Cabo’s skills are diminishing and the press will become intolerant for his poor defense up the middle. Nobody will ever describe Cano as hustling. Combined with the PED’s continuing to break his body down, he has the potential in only a couple of seasons to make Cespedes time off look pedestrian in comparison to AC amp. As a New Yorker with a disdain for the crook owners, I’m watching the over under for his firing.

So Willy don’t look to far down the road.! They will be out of the race before June.

Why wouldn’t they? They’ve been devastated the last 2 years with injuries. They accomplished more in 2015 and 2016 than all of the other NL East teams combined.

Hey Burn—as a loyal Mets fan I know what you mean. You value the “almosts” so much that you no longer understand that they don’t matter.

Look at 2017 and 18–when the team fell out of contention (before June 1). And how many meaningless games they played per season. (Over 110 each year.)

All teams work through injuries. Your team encourages it with poor training and weak oversight.

Here’s a plan for working past annual Mets Official excuses:

Each time you veer off into the poor Mets and self pity remind yourself that:

-The Mets have always brought this upon themselves.
-you can’t blame poor luck on Bernie Madoff got more than 6 years.

The rest of the mediocrity is franchise incompetence combined with Mutt and Jeff thievery.

I wouldn’t underestimate the Mets. They have a strong trio of SPs (DeGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler) that could make a run at the World Series if they were to make the playoffs. But at the same time, they have to stay healthy, plus, their offense has to click and give them run support and the bullpen to hold it down. Blah blah…the NL East is any teams to win unless your the Marlins.

I so badly want this Machado drama to be over. There have been so many conflicting reports in the last few weeks, I don’t know who or what to believe. Everyone has their own version of what’s going on. Frankly the sports world is even worse than the mainstream news media. I’ve never seen such poor and uncorroborated regular journalism before. Golly, just sign somewhere for a fat contract and let the circus be over! Let’s get to the rest of the market before spring hits

I’m really lost on how Brody can think the Mets are such a heavy favorite in the East?! I’ve got no dog in the fight, but the Nats are so much better on paper even without Harper, and the Braves and maybe Phillies look more dangerous too. I guess if a lot breaks right for the Mets they could possibly get in the playoffs. But for him to act like they’re such a lock to win the East makes me seriously question his ability to do his job correctly.

So much better is definitely a stretch, but agreed I personally don’t think were the definite favorite but as long as we stay healthy we can compete with anyone, as far as Brodie goes he’s just built different he only knows how to be the best so he expects the same from his baseball team.

He obviously feels like Cano is going to be great the next couple years. I have my doubts. Diaz is awesome, but he’s just a closer and they only can do so much. The Ramos signing was a good deal, but since when is Wilson Ramos a huge difference maker? Lowrie is kind of old again, but a proven player and good depth I guess.
Yeah I just like the Nats and Braves a lot. more. It doesn’t even seem close to me. Maybe I’m missing something? Even if Brodie thinks his pickups are much better players than I do (which he clearly does), there still not nearly enough to make the Mets a playoff lock. It’s just silly..

I’m ok with the Mets being done with the heavy lifting. A 5th starter (Gonzalez,Miley,Bucholtz) improvement over Vargas would be nice. But as long as there will be room to add at the deadline I’m good. The team can certainly compete as is (health permitting) and there is no runaway favorite. It’s going to be exciting in the NLEAST this year

As a white sox fan I just want these guys to sign somewhere. Even if it is the Yankees getting Machado over us, it doesnt matter. I just want the rest of the offseason to move on. My team is trending up from the abyss of the rebuild process and all I care about is seeing development.

There are only a handful of teams in on these 2 and all it takes is a team to get fed up and move on and these guys will lose a ton of leverage.

The writers fail to mention marketability when it comes to Harper and Machado.
Yes, what counts the most to a teams success is the performance on the field but looking at it from a pure business aspect Harper is a lot more marketable than Machado. Selling jerseys, being in commercials, selling other sports memorabilia etc… will bring more financial value to the team. I think this could come into play a bit more. Harper overall would bring more value to an organization.

Big market teams don’t care about selling jerseys anymore. Between government taxes, revenue sharing and the luxury tax, you don’t really want to be making that much more money than anybody else. It’s just gonna be taken from you, if you do.

Best way to run a big club, these days, is to keep the payroll low enough to minimize the luxury tax, and use any excess money to invest in things marginally or in no way related to baseball. The Yankees for instance are buying stakes in soccer teams, e-sports tournaments, TV networks, etc., etc.. All the while their payroll has been dropping, because baseball is not worth investing in with all the vultures looking for scraps.
