Jose Reyes Hopes To Play In 2019

By Jeff Todd | January 25, 2019 at 4:50pm CDT

Veteran infielder Jose Reyes is planning to play the 2019 season, Anthony Rieber of Newsday reports on Twitter. When last we checked in, Reyes had indicated uncertainty as to whether he’d continue his playing career.

The question remains whether Reyes will receive an appealing opportunity. His on-field decline is certainly part of the picture. But Reyes will likely find it especially hard to get another chance given that he was arrested and charged with attacking his wife in 2015. While the charges were ultimately dropped when she decided not to testify, Reyes has acknowledged making a “terrible mistake” and was suspended under the league’s domestic violence policy.

That terribly unfortunate event ultimately set the stage for Reyes to return to the Mets, where he has played for the past three seasons. While he certainly did not rediscover his prior All-Star form, Reyes was an effective player for the organization in the first two years of the deal. He struggled last year, however, with a career-worst .189/.260/.320 batting line in 251 plate appearances.

Under the circumstances, it’s all but impossible to imagine the 35-year-old securing a 40-man roster spot. Some organizations may decide not to consider hiring him at all. Still, there’s little doubt that the switch-hitter remains worthy of a non-roster contract from an on-field perspective, so it would not be surprising to see him catch on somewhere if he’s willing to take a minor-league deal.

If that player is Jose Reyes. You’re really going to sign someone who is bad at the game and beats their wife to a minor league deal when there are hundreds of other better infielders who don’t beat their wives without a deal? Yeah, any team signing Jose Reyes to a major or minor league deal is insane.

Hundreds of minor leaguers who don’t stink at baseball to boot.

I’m not sure why anybody would waste a roster spot on him. Even without the baggage he was just terrible last season. Can’t hit, can’t field… Why would anyone need that even in the minors?

Go to the D.R . And take as many illegal preforming substances you can find. Maybe catch on with a team there working out and if someone has a major injury on a mlb roster you might play a few games before getting suspended. Worth a shot.

He has been AWFUL since the start of the 2015 season. He’s been a bad hitter and an even worse defender. He made $46,000,000 in that time to produce -0.7 bWAR. He was worth -0.8 bWAR last year and -0.6 bWAR in 2017. He’s a piece of garbage individual and there is no reason any team in the league should even offer him a minor league deal. There are plenty of other bad infielders available on minor league deals who haven’t beat their spouse.

Unless, of course, Houston wants to pick up another woman beater while the price is low. Stash him in AAA.

It really doesn’t matter that much. Reyes’ last at bat in a Mets uniform should have been the final game of 2011, when he selfishly left the game after a bunt single to preserve the batting title.

The mets should have never let a woman beater return home to play for them. The Rockies showed character by cutting him upon his return from the suspension.

Not at all. It makes clear the reality of the situation: some teams will not want to employ him at all, due to his terrible act. How many? Unclear. But if he was still capable of more on the ballfield, there’d probably be more teams with interest.

I did not offer my opinion in the post. Had I done so, I can assure you that it would not be the one you suggest (i.e., that his baseball ability bears at all upon whether it is moral to employ him).

Here are the facts about reyes the virus 1) 2007 and 2008 biggest collapses in MLB history Reyes hit under 200 during both collapses and made everyone lose focus and urgency. 2) the blue Jays were under 500 with Reyes then they got rid of him and they started to win and went to the ALCS 2 years in a row 3)Rockies got 16 games worse after they acquired Reyes 4)The Marlins got rid of Reyes in the first year of a 5 year contract 5)2017 mets underachieving disaster 22 games under 500 with Reyes 6)2018 once again disaster, overall 30 games under 500 since Reyes returned. 7)last game Shea stadium history loss with Reyes. First game citi field history loss with Reyes. Reyes is the rare athlete that infects guys around him his laughing and overall personality doesn’t allow guys to have the right mindset to perform at their highest capabilities which is why the biggest collapses in history happened with Reyes . it’s been 2 decades of the same disaster result. Mets were in the World Series in 2015 before he showed up
