Minor MLB Transactions: 1/17/19

By Steve Adams | January 17, 2019 at 8:27am CDT

We’ll track the latest minor moves throughout the league here…

  • Outfielder Charlie Tilson cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the White Sox and has been sent outright to Triple-A Charlotte, the team announced to reporters (Twitter link via Daryl Van Schouwen of the Sun Times). Chicago will now be able to hang onto the 26-year-old speedster without dedicating a 40-man roster spot to him. Tilson suffered a torn hamstring in his MLB debut with the South Siders back in ’16 and saw his 2017 season wiped out by a stress reaction in his ankle. He returned to hit .264 with a solid .331 OBP in 121 plate appearances with the White Sox last season but slugged just .292. Lack of power isn’t new for Tilson, who has batted .266/.321/.356 in just shy of 700 Triple-A plate appearances. Tilson now finds himself a ways down the depth chart in Chicago and will need a strong showing in 2019 to move back up the organizational ladder (or to pique the interest of another team).

Maybe you can get a can of Coke for him.

trade bait? Nobody even picked him up off waivers. Besides, with Willie Jay ahead of him on the depth chart, Tilson may not see the majors until 2025 when Willie hangs up the cleats.

The Cardinals must be thanking their lucky stars they traded him to the pale hose instead of Harrison Bader who was Tilson’s main competition for the CF job at AAA.

I can’t imagine Bader was on the table during those trade talks lol. Can’t really be thanking your lucky stars when he wasn’t offered. Bader was top 5ish prospect for cards while tilson was fringe top 10 at the time.

I never said Bader was on the table. I live near Springfield and saw both of them at AA. Tilson was supposed to be the golden boy but Bader was starting to look like a challenger. The FO wisely decided that Tilson was limited in his advancement but Bader would be coming along a bit later anyway. As I said – good decision to trade Tilson but I don’t recall who we got for him.

Bader has K’d 30% of his AB…..wow….getting in Moncada territory there but with less upside. Almost 31% in career

Duke didn’t do much. Even trade for both teams. Tilson on DL and Duke only a fair showing before DL himself.

What has Bader done so for? Not exactly a perennial All-Star. Good defense? not much than average at best bat. Let’s see what happens this year.

You obviously are not familiar with Bader. Without stretching it I can say he is probably in the top three best CFs in baseball. He came into everyday play late after Tommy Pham was traded. His defense was of Gold Glove quality if he had played the entire season.. But you can stick with your one stat to judge him by. You will be hearing more of him in ’19.

Bill N, you just described Peter Bourjos circa 2011.

No need to talk to you. You seem to know it all anyway. I will let Bader do the talking while you keep your head in the sand. Don’t quite understand your “Pham is an infielder” remark so maybe it is you that doesn’t have a clue.
