Yankees Designate Hanser Alberto For Assignment

By Steve Adams | January 11, 2019 at 9:41am CDT

The Yankees announced Friday that infielder Hanser Alberto has been designated for assignment. His roster spot will go to left-hander Zach Britton, whose three-year deal to return to the club is now official.

Alberto, 26, was claimed off waivers in early November, perhaps with an eye toward adding some infield depth following the loss of Didi Gregorius to Tommy John surgery. He’ll lose his 40-man roster spot with the Yanks before ever suiting up, though his strong work in Triple-A could generate interest elsewhere. Alberto, who has experience at second base, shortstop and third base, is a .309/.330/.438 hitter in 1000 Triple-A plate appearances, though he’s managed just a .192/.210/.231 slash through 192 MLB plate appearances with the Rangers.

Knew this was coming but a shame nonetheless. Excellent defense all throughout the infield, solid speed and an underrated hit tool. Hopefully someone grabs him.
Giants, Brewers, Cardinals, Seattle, Baltimore could all be reasonable fits

192 AB in the majors does not give a clear call on if hes bad. Someone will get him and give him a real shot at 400 ABs.

That’s what caught my interest. Seems he’s certainly got potential, though I need to look him up more.

I know it’s a pipe dream but I wish it was Ellsbury coming off the roster.

Ellsbury could make sense for another big contract. I always wanted Ellsbury for Samarzja. I don’t that he would win the Cy Young, but we could use like Garcia or Lynn, maybe with more upside. As it stands, where does Els play ? And I don’t want to eat the money like the Jays did. This will eventually get solved, he only has 2 years left..

Yeah, but at this point it’s more the roster spot that he takes up than the money. If he’s healthy this year and they can’t trade him, he has to be on the active roster. Since Stanton will most often DH, they are going to carry 5 OF. Ellsbury wouldn’t be the worst person to have as the 4th (really 5th) OF but that means Gardy is starting and Frazier starts the year at AAA, and I’d really love an opportunity for him to start in LF.

Wonder if the Tigers take a flyer they don’t have a 2b that can hit and is only an average hitter.
