Agency Changes: Gurriels, Calhoun

By Jeff Todd | February 14, 2019 at 9:23pm CDT

Here are the latest agency changes from around the game. As always, you can find updated representation information in MLBTR’s Agency Database.

  • Both of the Gurriel brothers — Yuli Gurriel of the Astros and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. of the Blue Jays — have hired Magnus Sports, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca (via Twitter). The elder Gurriel is closest to free agency, though he still has two full seasons to go on his five-year contract with the Houston organization. He’s also already 34 years of age. His little brother is still just 25 years old and cracked the bigs for the first time last year, turning in a promising initial showing with the Jays. His contract takes him through the 2023 campaign, with at least one year of arbitration eligibility remaining thereafter.
  • Meanwhile, Rangers power-hitting prospect Willie Calhoun has hired MVP Sports Group, per Robert Murray of The Athletic (Twitter link). The 24-year-old has seen brief tastes of the majors in each of the past two seasons but has yet to earn a full showcase at the game’s highest level. He’s seen as a high-end talent with the bat who still needs to iron things out defensively. It seems Calhoun will ultimately be given a shot in left field, but he’ll need to bounce back from a 2018 power outage (11 home runs in 578 total plate appearances) in order to force his way back onto the active roster.

Yes, Sometimes look at a long term fit instead of a 1 – 2 year fit.

They need to trade some outfielders. Gallo, calhoun, mazara, deshields, with taveras, thompson, and martinez in minors

As an Asian man, my initial reaction to Yuli gesture was laughing at Yuli because joke try so bad. Second reaction was laughing at Yuli because all everyone reaction punished him for bad joke flavor. Joke is on Yuli!

Don’t act all holy like you’ve never done something inappropriate or insensitive (even if its with your ‘friends’). We all do stupid things! You and learn and hopefully grow from it.

Not all of us do it on national tv while we’re being paid millions. He is lucky Darvish pulled a class act and let him off the hook. Otherwise it would have blown up way more than it did

Question you should ask yourself… If he had hit the bomb off of Kenley Jansen and acted like a monkey in the dugout, would you be as cool about it? Basically the same thing

X if you’re watching the Yankees you’d know Gurriel played for the Jays. Either you’re just trolling or you don’t watch enough baseball. I do expect more from you. The others can practice keyboard bullying…

The pence pickup is relatively risk free. Teams want options

Calhoun is 24 but had a down 2018, Pence is a bounce back candidate brought in to compete with Calhoun for a roster spot

Move Gallo to center, bring in Bryce Harper ,Texas needs to give us Ranger fans something to believe in again, since losing Josh Hamilton years back this has been a faceless club, sure we had Beltre but he was never the face of the Rangers, to me he will be the guy who pulled a hamstring once or twice a season and the guy who hated his head to be touched, Gallo is a big man and centerfield is rough on big guys. Bring in Bryce.

Not sure Calhoun is ready for the big leagues. He gives some indication of being a dead pull hitter in these days of the Shift, not much arm strength and his glove needs improvement. Gallo plays decent defense in left field. I’m not sure Gallo is going to stick around long term unless he starts making some better contact with runners on base. I sure hope the new hitting coach can work with him. .
