Carlos Correa Wins Arbitration Case Against Astros

By Jeff Todd | February 5, 2019 at 2:23pm CDT

Shortstop Carlos Correa won his arbitration case against the Astros, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link). The GSE client will earn $5MM rather than the $4.25MM figure that the team had submitted.

One of the game’s brightest young stars, Correa picked a poor time for his first misstep in the majors. After turning in monster offensive numbers in an injury-limited 2017 season, the former Rookie of the Year again missed time in 2018 and wasn’t quite himself at the plate. He ended up posting a .239/.323/.405 slash over 468 plate appearances.

So long as Correa can put his back issues behind him, his outlook remains quite bright. He’ll still open his arb earning period with a strong $5MM base rate, though that’s about half of what he might have taken home with a platform season that better matched his prior offensive output. (Fellow youthful star shortstop Francisco Lindor earned $10.55MM after posting his best offensive season in his final pre-arb year.)

This decision is now reflected in MLBTR’s Arbitration Tracker.

It’s called a down year, he helped them win their only world series, he is worth like 4 times as mich as this. Absolute Ignorance.

Here’s somewhat of a comp- Baez helped Cubs win WS, he got 5.2 but Correa gets 5 mil??? I was shocked by Baez agreeing to 5.2 arb salary. I’d take Baez at 5.2 7 days a week & twice on Sunday compared to Correa at 5. Dude almost won MVP whereas Correa was injured or underperforming. SMH cause something doesn’t add up.

Hey Jeff Todd, you mention in article that Correa could have earned more (like Lindor’s 10.55 mil) but how can you explain Baez only getting 5.2 this year with his unbelievable season?

It’s an insult to Lindor to offer the comparison.

because when you are arbitration eligible the first time, uses your entire career to date, not just last season.

baez, if we lump 2014-15 together, had 1 awful season, 2 slightly good seasons, and his breakout of 2018.

had say, 2017 matched 2018, he certainly gets more than 5.2 million

You do realize that he was awarded the amount that HIS SIDE SUBMITTED, right? That is why the headline says “Correa WINS”.

That bum is a 24 year old who was an all star last season and ROY 3 years ago. But if you don’t want him, I’ll gladly take him.

The young guys are drastically underpaid. But the MLBPA leaders are all older players who are focusing on free agency dollars and creature comforts for themselves.

My version of “monster numbers” greatly differs from yours. His line was .315/.391.550 and 24HRs/84 RBIs. Those are very good numbers, especially the OPS, but not MONSTER. He’s a very good player, but the comparison to a young A-Rod that he gets are both untrue and unfair. He will eventually be grossly overpaid, and I hope it’s not Houston doing it. His health is a major concern already at such a young age.

A very good player with those numbers still deserves more than 5 mil

Those were Correa’s stats from 2 years ago. Baez again as a comp was close to Correa’s stats in 2017. If you take 2 year (’17-’18) average between those players and Baez’s stats absolutely destroy Correa’s! Yet he gets 200k more?!?!?!
Also, how in the world does Lindor make double what Baez makes in his arb1 year? Baez “agreed” to his arb salary which is mind boggling. He got robbed when you compare his stats & salary to Lindor’s and Correa’s.

Considering Correa signed way under slot value as 1-1 in draft, allowing Astros to also offer McCullers over slot to forgo college, I’d say it’s probably a wash at this point. If he returns to 2017 form and makes it a whole year he’ll get paid!

Some of the takes on here are a little surprising. Let’s keep in mind that this is a 23 year old player that’s already been worth 18.3 WAR in his career, yet you’re flipping out that he’s getting paid $5mil? Come on, the guy is obviously worth it

With this behind them and only Cole arb left, does Houston offer a big front end 5 year deal now to GC to entice him long term? Pay him big upfront so it all levels out when CC, Breg and Springer are FA’s.
