Clayton Kershaw Battling Shoulder Issue

By Jeff Todd and TC Zencka | February 25, 2019 at 6:24pm CDT

FEBRUARY 25, 6:19pm: Kershaw tried to play catch today but “didn’t feel great,” Roberts told reports including MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick (via Twitter), Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register (Twitter link), and Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times (also on Twitter). The organization still doesn’t have plans for an MRI and will wait at least a few more days before allowing Kershaw to attempt throwing again.

“It’s not ideal,” Roberts acknowledged. “You’re hoping when he picks up a ball that he comes out of it feeling better. So obviously it’s not ideal. But we’ll deal with whatever comes our way.”

FEBRUARY 24, 9:50pm: Kershaw suggests the shoulder discomfort may stem from an attempt to add velocity this spring, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. No MRI was taken, but since being shut down Kershaw has been taking anti-inflammatories to improve the feeling in his shoulder, which appears to be effective. The plan is to have Kershaw resume his throwing activities on Monday.

12:54pm: Roberts provided some more details on Kershaw’s condition today, telling reporters (including Castillo and The Athletic’s Pedro Moura) that the issue is with Kershaw’s throwing shoulder.  The southpaw has been working to increase his velocity this offseason, which Roberts speculated as a possible contributor to the soreness.  There doesn’t appear to be any major concern about Kershaw, as Roberts said the hurler won’t be undergoing an MRI and is still expected to throw again within a few days’ time.  Kershaw is still expected to be on the mound for the Dodgers on Opening Day.

FEBRUARY 22: The Dodgers have shut down star hurler Clayton Kershaw indefinitely, manager Dave Roberts tells Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times. The venerable southpaw is dealing with an unspecified health issue that Roberts would describe only as an “arm kind of thing.”

Initial signals from the organization are that there’s nothing to worry about at this point. Kershaw says he’s “just going to take a few days right now” and adds that he expects to resume throwing in short order, Bill Plunkett of the Orange County-Register tweets.

In Roberts’s view, too, this is just an early pause “to just kind of step away, give him a couple days.” That said, he acknowledged that he “can’t say right now” just when Kershaw will be ready to ramp back up.

Clearly, there’s no reason to rush to judgment about what might be going on here. Given Kershaw’s recent health history, there’s also some reason for added concern. Both men were rather circumspect about the underlying issue, declining to clarify whether Kershaw’s prior back and shoulder problems were involved. For the time being, then, we’ll just have to wait to see how things progress and await further word.

Bad part is, he worked out pretty religiously to get that heater back up. May have some dead arm issues, hope that’s all that’s wrong for the hall of famer!

If the ERA is sub-3, then the 120 IP is acceptable. Dodgers don’t need him to be the best player anymore.

Yeah they do. First round after wild card is a 5 game playoff. If he’s not pitching 2 of those games, their chances go down substantially.

Huh? Yes they do. They are paying him $30 million a year to be an ace and anchor that staff. I highly doubt they are expecting 120 IP a year. C’mon man.

I live how people just throw out random numbers like 120 innings. In the past three seasons Kershaw’s spent time on the DL but still averaged 162 IP with his lowest output at 149. Now all of a sudden outa nowhere he’s only good for 120 innings…ok.

He lost three weeks to tendonitis last year. That issue is acute, not chronic. The chronic issue is his back. If they’d said his back was giving him trouble I’d be a lot more concerned. They are going to treat him like the crown jewels, which he is.

I know Clayton’s regular season career numbers wouldn’t be so good if he faced the likes of Carmelo Martinez and Ryan Klesko 18 to 21 games a year.

Carmelo Martinez? The guy that posted a lifetime BA of .245, .337 OBP, and 108 HR’s over 9 years? You are just silly. Klesko was better, but he faces much better players already in the likes of Arenado, Goldy (as a DBack), etc. Just a strange sample of guys to pull from when there are so many better players in that division already.

Kershaw has near HOF stats already. I’m just baffled by this in general.

Well, it’s not fatigue, so there’s a legitimate reason for concern. Hopefully taking 7-10 days away from active work helps.

There’ll be domino effects if he misses several months this season. The division gets immediately more competitive in light of recent and pending developments.

ST just started so no need to jump to conclusions. He hasn’t been throwing much the past 4 months so it could just be general soreness. I read other reports where he made it through the BP session but he wasn’t happy with how it went.

In seasons past I’ll worry about Kershaw health. But with the depth of the rotation and walker showing he can be a ace. Dodgers will be fine if Kershaw had to miss time

Hill is commonly on the DL same for Ryu. Not a lot of wiggle room in that rotation for all the problems they’ve had with those three.

Ferguson, Santana, Stewart, Stripling, and Urias are five MLB ready pitchers available for when guys are on the DL, plus the Dodgers will make move when necessary as the season progresses, they have wiggle room and then some.

          “Led both leagues in walks.”

          “Belted 34 home runs.”

“Wrapped up age-25 season, prior to FA.”

Opposing teams have no problem walking him knowing walks won’t hurt them. Clearly those walks didn’t help them win games. More hitting probably would have. So go ahead and lead the league in walks. Won’t help.

Good thing they have that taxi squad of SP…. oh wait that was the 2017 team. Good thing they have all that bullpen depth with a rotation full of 5IP starters… wait that was 2017 too.

Can anyone say with conviction the 2019 team is better than the 2018 squad? Clearly 2018 team wasn’t as good as 2017 as LAD never filled the role Brandon Morrow provided on that team. I mean it wasn’t like he wasn’t lights out in virtually every post season game in 2017 until he hit a wall in WS Game 5

Someone explain how Pollock, Kelly & Martin make the Dodgers better than last year’s time that had the performances of Puig, Kemp, Wood & Grandal? How is it that Dodger fan seems to think their team is better this year?

Kemp is a 1 dimensional player that disappeared in the crutial part of the season. Only reason he was an all star was because of a fan vote. Wood was buried on the depth chart so they have more than enough to fill his shoes. Pollock for Puig is a wash. Grandal will hurt but its not like Yaz was posey with the bat. Kelly helps the bullpen. You also have players who were injured last season coming back, guys like Muncy and Freese for a full season

      • El Kabong

Puig and Kemp are minus defenders. Pollock and Verdugo are improvements in that area. With nine solid candidates for the rotation, Wood is not needed. Buehler, Ferguson, Urias, Muncy and Freese from day 1. Turner missed the first 40 games a year ago. Also, the best shortstop in the NL returns from an injury. Compare to the 2017 roster when Utley and Forsythe were sharing second base, Ethier and Culberson on the roster along with Darvish. The 2019 team figures to be far deeper.

This is a very bad sign and the Dodgers tend to understate injuries. I’m not expecting much if anything from him this season and guessing some procedure may actually be necessary. I know they have depth but the depth is not reliable. I’m hoping they trade from their youth/depth for more pitching.

    Reply
    • BlueSkyLA

What procedure would that be? Kershaw’s chronic issue, the one that’s cost him time in most of the last four seasons, is his back. That problem hasn’t resulted in a procedure. Even if the tendonitis he experienced last year has recurred, would that call for a procedure?

The Dodgers position on reporting player health is to report as little as possible. I don’t see that as a tendency to understate so much as a policy of not turning over their cards unnecessarily. Of the things I don’t like about this FO, that isn’t one of them. It seems like a wise and perfectly justified policy. You usually make good sense, but I’m afraid I don’t see it here.

As good as he has been they should have let Keyshawn walk. He’s lost 8 mph off his fastball the last 3-4 years and has had back/arm problems. His stuff will only continue to decline too

Kershaw threw 94 consistently (I swear he was a machine, because he hit 94 seemingly every fastball for 5 years), and could touch 95-96 if he really tried (or dropped down a la Rich Hill). Now he’s at 90-91, and once in a while he could hit 92-93 on a pitch.

He hasn’t lost 8 mph. From what I’ve seen, his slider is more of a cutter at times, and his fastball and slider/cutter are too close in terms of shape and speed. His slightly slower slider had more depth, diving down and in to righties and down and away to lefties. Now it doesn’t dive as much, and the speed is close enough to his fastball that guessing wrong doesn’t hurt the hitters like it used to.

Kershaw at not as good as he used to be is still better than 95% of anybody else so I will gladly take what the first ballot HOF gives us…he deserves to hang em up wearing Dodger Blue

According to Fangraphs Kershaw’s velocity averaged 94.4 in his first two seasons (2008 and 2009) and has never reached that level since. But the loss was nominal through 2015, when he averaged 94.3. Since then he has steadily declined to last year’s average of 91.4.

As a result, he’s gone to the fastball less and less. Last year he threw the fastball exactly 40.0% (it was 53.4% in 2015). Correspondingly, he’s increased his use of the slider from 27.6% in 2015 to 41.9% last year. His curve has maintained at between 16 and 18%. His changeup has virtually disappeared.

In other words, as he’s aged both chronologically and innings pitched, he’s adapted. I don’t know if this speaks directly to the increasing physical breakdowns.

The change is Kershaw’s mystery pitch. The mystery is why he hasn’t developed it more. In baseball you seldom get to ride home on the horse that brung you, especially not pitchers. He’s going to need to open his mind to developing a different approach if he hopes to pitch deep into his 30s. Any questions? Ask Rich Hill.

Kershaw is a class act and a outstanding pitcher. Hall of Famer. However, Kershaw is fortunate the Dodgers extended him. He’s been paid a ton of money and looks like he’s on a quick, steep decline. I hope I’m wrong.

Bumgarner never got his payday and was truly deserving. That is a travesty.

The Kershaw decline has shifted into another gear now. The doodgers couldn’t win that championship when Kershaw was in his prime. Difficult to imagine them doing it in Kershaw’s decline.

If the Dodgers aren’t even going with a MRI yet, I don’t see much reason to worry. Teams go straight to a MRI for very minor injuries. Things could change, but at this point a lot of posters here are simply overreacting.

MRI’s seldom provide a definitive identification of a problem.

It’s normal for a great pitcher’s decline to be sudden and steep, ie: Steve Carlton, Sandy Koufax, Cliff Lee, Roy Halliday and now it’s Clayton Kershaw’s time. No one escapes mortality.

The point is that teams go with a MRI if there is even a small cause for concern. I didn’t say it definitively identifies a problem.

Keuchel’s an FA, so we would only have to give up a draft pick since he received a qualifying offer.

@MWeller77 I mean, those are all of the top pitchers in baseball in general. Either way, you’re still comparing Aces, and all of them would be the Ace on any team they joined. I’m not quite throwing Nola in the category with those guys yet though. He is incredibly good and the Ace of the Phillies, but the track records of the others are ridiculous.

Kershaw has stepped back the last two years in some categories, but Nola’s best FIP year of his 4 year career (3.01 in 2018) is still half a point higher than Kershaw’s 11 year average (2.64).

LOL, and I got downvoted to oblivion today on the Harper article, when saying that the Dodgers’ new interest in Harper is related to the fact that Kershaw is much, much more injured than they are letting on.

I think Kershaw is done for most of the year with a rotator cuff injury. The interview he and Dave Roberts gave yesterday made it clear something is really wrong and they did a horrible job of hiding it.

The Dodgers now need to pivot quickly by signing Bryce Harper, which will free them up to trade one or two OFs as headliners in a package for either Kluber or Bauer. They need to do this now, before the extent of Kershaw’s injury comes out which would put them in a position of dealing from desperation.

Oh, hey it’s Magic on the phone now. Hey Magic, I’ve got a slightly used LeBron here which you can have for the low, low price of $35 to $45 million per year. He won’t play defense ever again, and he is completely toxic to every team he’s ever been on, but he does put up lots of triple-doubles by racking up stats in garbage time. He also just wants to make movies and TV shows.

Oh and all of his teammates hate him. Sound good?

Kershaw with all his health problems at only 30 is another example of why Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan were so great throwing at the velocities those guys did into their 40s, 5000+ strikouts and World Series rings.

Doodgers wasted Kershaw’s best years not winning the Series. 2014 was amazing but no championship.

Does anyone else find this suspect? Kershaw is arguably the best pitcher in baseball, is experiencing ongoing issues with the shoulder, yet the team hasn’t given him an MRI? Why not? It would have ZERO adverse affects. Yet they allow him to try throwing the ball? It seems to me like they are withholding something.
