Giants Acquire Trevor Gott

By Jeff Todd | February 13, 2019 at 9:01am CDT

The Giants have acquired righty Trevor Gott from the Nationals, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). Cash considerations are headed to D.C. in return. The Giants placed injured righty Johnny Cueto on the 60-day injured list to make roster space.

Gott was designated for assignment recently by the Nationals. The hard-throwing sinkerballer becomes the latest relief arm to be targeted by the San Francisco organization.

Still just 26 years of age, Gott turned in a highly promising 2015 campaign but has stalled out since heading to the Nationals in the ensuing offseason. All told, he owns a 4.64 ERA with 6.1 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in 75 2/3 MLB frames. Gott’s standout pitch is a blistering two-seamer that has enabled him to carry a 54.3% groundball rate in the majors.

Giants fans were so excited over Zaidi and I told them right away that it wouldn’t last. He was not a loss for the Dodgers. He was never even a factor.

This season, and the next couple, haven’t even began yet, let’s reserve judgement until we have some time to see how things are going. There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a slew of guys on the cheap and seeing if any of them do well. It’s fiscally wise based upon their recent track record of handing out big money contracts to guys who then don’t perform

Yes, have to wait and see hopefully they give him a good 5 years to prove himself bc Giants are in a bad position. I also agree Zaidi may have not been a huge factor but that might be bc they think so much alike

Giants gave out bad contracts in an attempt to compete- Cueto samaedjza traded pieces for longoria and mccutchen add on belt and Posey.

Not much zaidi can do but wait out the bad contracts, build the farm through high draft picks and IFA spending, and look to compete in 3 or so years.

Not a loss in the way that dodgers didnt do anything besides choke… hard… so yea, technically no one involved with LA would be a loss since they havent won sht in the first place. Real Giants fans (including me) and stoked off Zaidi. Dunno what you’re talkin bout

Cueto wasn’t a bad contract, he just got hurt. Dodgers didn’t choke, they made it to the World Series in a season where people thought they weren’t even going to make the postseason. If we’re going to talk about choking, I’d say the giants choked in their attempt to prevent the Dodgers from making it to the postseason.

Dodgers are a joke of a franchise. Giants “bad contracts” were rewards for winning 3 championships while the Dodgers watched on tv. Dodgers and their fans are poor sport choke artists. All the evidence points to this. But you enjoy your delusional fantasyland.

Leo is 100% right. Faidi Zaidi has not done anything; he’s not going for it nor is he hitting reset. Either Trade Bumgarner or spend over the luxury to win. Giant fans keep saying the team has a ton of money. Well, what are they waiting for? Oh right, they don’t have the money or refuse to blow by the threshold.

Also….golden rule in baseball: never, ever, ever hire an ex-executive from the Oakland Athletics during the Beane era. They fail. Dodgers can attest to that.

Faidi Zaidi is stalling to prolong his tenure as GM. The longer you wait to make a prominent move the longer you will hold the job.

        • zachgwest

He can’t reset because he can’t move those contracts. He’s in a tricky position why eat salary on those contracts to replace Crawford, Belt etc with who?

        • TrimReaper

Zach….nobody said EVERY contract has to be moved. Bumgarner is the guy to move. Or was.

That said, Giants fans shouldn’t expect or want Harper. Harper shouldn’t want to play on a team that won’t win for another few years. San Fran is a tweener team; not great, not horrible.

        • zachgwest

Lol okay so if you move mad bum what do you get right now? Not as much as you would at the deadline… that’s why he hasn’t been moved. Two if you want a rebuild then you do move all contracts you possibly can. They just have more leverage on moving the contracts they have at the deadline. That’s why nothing has been done. If you don’t want to rebuild then add players can’t have it both ways. You been trimmed.

        • Frisco500

This tree trimmer needs to stick to his day job. First off, Zaidi is not the GM. Second, sitting around doing nothing will get him fired quicker than a couple big signings in which the FO would have to wait n see how they played out before deciding the “GM’s” fate. Stick to gardening.

        • commentinggenius

Also his take on where Harper should sign is questionable. He shouldn’t want to play for a team that’s out of contention for a few years?

        • zachgwest

Very few teams are in serious contention every year.

        • sleepyfloyd

Well since it’s a tweeter team wtf are you insisting FZ do something?!? You’re just being a hypocrite.

The have one of the worst farm systems in MLB that will take a few years to rebuild AND they have an old roster with contracts they can’t move. They must likely will move Bum by mid season.

It would be stupid for FZ to sign a bunch of guys because the tram is not competing this year.

Another bum added SMH, let’s start adding some talent. Our best move this off-season so far is G. Parra. Holland isn’t going to repeat what he did last season, and Pomeranz is a Paul maholm type. Sorry Giants fans, looks like another season below .500.

That’s not true at all. I believe guys can be placed on the 60 day the first week of March. I haven’t checked on the exact dates, but it’s generally 2 weeks after P/C report.

    • GONEcarlo

So I researched it, and my first guess was right:
“A player cannot be placed on the MLB 60-day Injured List after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, and during the post-season and off-season, up until the start of Spring Training (beginning on the date that pitchers & catchers are scheduled to report).”

The key point here after these moves so far is that their minor league inventory is clearly better now than the day he arrived. End of story. Nothing flashy yet, but they’re not tanking either.

If they get off to a surprising start, they’ll try and compete; if they don’t, he’ll be cashing in some of these additions for quality minor league pieces for the coming years or to help sell off costly contracts. At least its a plan with a good strategy behind it.
