“Two years of a premium catcher who you could reasonably expect to extend.”

What in Realmuto’s history (or anything he or his agent have said) suggests that this is the case?

Have you not noticed how the past 2 offseasons have treated FAs?

Have you not noticed how the past 2 offseasons have treated FAs? if I was a player, I’d want to avoid the open market at (almost) any cost

If he’s so obviously going to get screwed in FA why would they even want to extend him?

He’s only made $5M in earnings to date which he’ll double in 2019 but after that he’s got ZERO $’s guaranteed to him AND he’s a catcher. Don’t be surprised if there’s instant chatter about an extension as the PHI win window has opened up now.

Alternative is he runs through arbitration for 2020 @ age 29 and if he is still performing gets a QO slapped on him in front of his age 30 free agent season. Ask Grandal how that worked out for him? Which makes me wonder if the rumored NYM offer could be framework.

I could see them tearing up his 1yr deal for 2019 and replacing it with a 5yr deal + a signing bonus to cover his age 28-32yrs. The AVV gets dragged down due to 2 arb years being included but no reason to think he still can’t secure a minimum guarantee of $60M with escalators adding more.

If that’s the Phillies’ offer Realmuto and his agent do what they did with Miami and publicly shut down extension talks.

Realmuto used not signing an extension to force his way out of Miami and the losing, period, end of story.

Dude is one foul ball or back swing away from being concussed out of baseball. He’s out of Miami and at the moment the Phillies have other more pressing front office work but no one should be surprised if in spring this gets discussed in early March when rosters are settled. Whether they agree or not who knows but very recent history says he should listen attentively

Nice move for both teams if prospects pan out always a risk plenty of great prospects who had to find new careers outside of baseball
