Cardinals Claim Merandy Gonzalez

By Jeff Todd | March 28, 2019 at 1:22pm CDT

The Cardinals have claimed righty Merandy Gonzalez off waivers from the Giants, per a club announcement. Southpaw Brett Cecil was moved to the 60-day injured list to create roster space.

The 23-year-old Gonzalez didn’t have a stirring performance in 2018, leading the Marlins to dump him from their 40-man roster. But he has drawn no shortage of interest from clubs that like the raw tools, with the Cards now following the Giants in being willing to commit a roster spot to get a first-person look.

Young, not bad velo, and has a few pitches. Can’t believe the marlins have better on their 40 man.

they don’t, they are just a joke of an organization. They traded away the reigning MVP for a paltry return simply because they couldnt keep the commitment they made to him.

It was actually the previous ownership who made that commitment.

The Stanton deal was the best trade they made out of the 3.

2 options left, but I don’t see the track record of minor league success to excite any one.

Worth the flyer if they can keep him on the 40 man

If he had minor league success he wouldn’t be on waivers at 23 years of age….He’s actually never even pitched at the AAA level. Only has 14 starts above high A but the marlins through him into the bigs last year. Has a 94 mph fastball and throws 3 other pitches. As worthy of a waiver claim as anyone else.

You are right. They should have fired him 6 months ago. Now the Giants won’t have a perfect season. They should have fired him a year ago…The good for nothing lying…

The Giants have plummeted off a huge cliff and aren’t going to be able to spend their way out of it anymore. They have virtually no tradable assets to speed up the total teardown that is necessary. MadBum won’t fetch much at this point. Everyone is old and on cost prohibitive contracts. They also have a horrendously bad farm system on top of that.

What would a tear down accomplish? You are not going to anyone good by trading over-the-hill players. Their farm system is not horrendously bad. They have some good players.

A few good players does NOT make a good farm system, because the success rates are so small in general, so banking on a small core of players in the mid to low minors isn’t really a great strategy. They have a ton of basically dead weight contracts of washed up vets and below average MLB regulars and are ranked in the bottom 5 for farm quality. That’s a horrible way to start a rebuild and won’t enable them to still stay competitive while doing so. It’s baseball purgatory for them for a good 4-5 years.

They should be shipping players like him to Korea, Japan, Tawain, China, anywhere willing to pay them more than they’d get in the minors, and a little bit of money for the teams. They could get a third, or half of a year worth of service time with the club retaining their rights. Gives the players a place to hone their craft while rewarding players and teams with more than they’d normally get. Miles Mikolas, Thames and others have shown this can work. The vast majority will never make it anyway but it’s a better deal for both sides. Players who are sent in their mid twenties will have a chance to come back and still get a decent payday.

International leagues are only allowed to have a handful of players from other countries on their team. That will never be a solution nor is it practical

Just so you know a player has to agree to that.

He sucks and I’m sure they have an insurance policy they want to use to recover some wasted cash.

I’m sure they are going to eat his contract. I don’t think you pay the cost of insurance on these relatively small deals.
