Mike Trout Downplays Interest In Spring Contract Talks

By Jeff Todd | March 1, 2019 at 3:15pm CDT

3:15PM: Trout provided some clarification in a follow-up comment to Torres (Twitter link), saying that his original statement “didn’t mean” he would be holding off extension talks until next offseason.

11:17AM: On the heels of Bryce Harper’s deal with the Phillies, Angels superstar Mike Trout was asked today about his own contract situation. Though he’s still two years away from the open market, there has been no shortage of speculation about the possibility of the Halos pursuing another extension with the game’s greatest current player.

Trout’s comments may not have closed the door to talks, but they were anything but a positive sign for those who’d like to see a deal come together. When asked by Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link) whether he’d like to work on a new contract, Trout responded:

“With spring training you want to get ready for the season. You don’t wanna worry about anything else.”

There are several ways to take that sort of comment, to be sure. It’s oblique enough that it arguably shouldn’t be taken to signify much of anything. Then again, Trout has to this point been fastidiously non-committal regarding his future (or even the possibility of near-term talks). And the stakes are high, as this offseason provided a potential window for the Halos to secure the franchise’s greatest-ever player for the long run.

There’s no necessary rush for the Angels, who can explore talks next fall. Trout enjoys no-trade protection and there’s zero indication that the Angels have any interest in dealing him regardless. With Trout already slated to receive $33.25MM in each of the next two seasons and plenty already in the bank, he’s unlikely to grant much of a discount.

Still, the clock is ticking on Trout’s tenure with the club. If indeed talks aren’t to be held in earnest this spring, that leaves the 2019-20 offseason as perhaps the only remaining realistic extension window. Trout is said to be focused on playing for a winning team; the Halos have missed the postseason in each of the past four seasons and have an at-best-uncertain outlook for the coming campaign. Today’s comments probably don’t represent a major change in the situation, but they do serve to highlight what’s at stake in the near future for the Angels organization.

Stanton trade was less about high dollar signing aversion and more about slashing payroll to reduce debt and acquisition costs of buying the team.

Wasn’t Harper supposed to get that type of deal too? Everyone is expecting $450-500 million for Trout. He will end up signing for $350MM maybe. Salaries just don’t go up THAT fast.

Except that Trout is the actual generational talent that Harper believes he is. And Trout has zero holes inhis game. And Trout shows up every year. And Trout will have 20 suitors, not 3. Aside from age at free agency, Harper is significantly inferior to Trout.

Trout is better than Harper; there’s no doubt about that, but Harper should have had a lot more suitors than the 5 or 6 teams involved. I think the same will be true of Trout. Teams that don’t spend are still not going to spend. Teams that are focused on extensions are still going to be focused on extensions.

So while every major league team should be in on Trout, I don’t think that will be the case.

I don’t care what went down this year. Barring a catastrophic injury Trout will get his 400 million. He’s on a completely different level than Harper or Machado.

Ite a possibility for Trout, Harper is not even in Trout’s ballpark lolll, when he’s been consistent since coming up surrounded with weak teams and puts up the numbers while being mostly healthy, he will most likely get something in the 400s.. barring injuries or a spooky decline.

Surely teams will front load contract talks with Trout’s projected contracts. The Albert Pujols deal should show to front load contracts for players past 10 years of playing.

Agreed. Once Sixto was used to bring in Realmuto, the Phils lack the top end talent to acquire Trout. Maybe by next offseason guys like Medina, Bohm, Garcia, and Howard will move into the top-50 but as things stand now the Phils cannot get it done.

lol. Phillies fans landed Harper basically by default after he all but begged west coast teams to come close to the deal he got and then they read Trout say he wants to focus on baseball instead of contracts and they project.

Trout is way more likely than not to stay with the Angels, but if he chooses not to, it’s going to CHAOS as every team will throw the kitchen sink at him.

If Harper wants to remain in good standing with the Church of the Latter Day Saints, then he will have to pay them $33M over the next 13 years (10% of gross income). Keep that in mind when talking about Harper being all about the money!

He took less money annually to play in Philly. He chose no opt outs for 13 years. This narrative that Harper reluctantly settled for Philly has already been proven false. I get it. It’s sort of fun to pick on Philadelphia after spending all that money, but the narrative is false.

And guess what? The Phillies will definitely be in on Trout. And everyone is going to think Trout wants to play for the team he grew up rooting for, but it may not happen.

He grew up a Phillies fan, it’s well documented. Millville is South Jersey, Phillies country.
          Here is just one example……
“Trout’s father recalled a story from a few years back when in the middle of the night, Jeff heard Mike scream from his room.

“Dad, we got Roy Halladay!” Mike yelled. To which his Dad responded: “the Angels got Halladay?”

“No, the Phillies did!” Mike replied. “Son, you’re a member of the Angels. What’s with this we?!””

They Angels can’t build a contender if all five starters go on the DL this year. That we know. The Angels are a contender if only two or three go on the DL this year.

The angels had like 9 starters and bullpen arms hit the DL on TJ and other throwing related injuries and that’s not adding the loss of key lineup players and depth pieces. At least Oakland had a healthy strong BP to support your team.

Went to see him play when he came to Philly last time. His home toen of Millville bought up entire sections of the stadium. His mom was sitting a couple rows in front of us. She had a huge smile and cried when the stadium errupted in cheers when he came up to bat. She also laughed (as well as he did) when the entire stadium booed him on his second at bat. The whole Face of Baseball thing was blown out of proportion Trout is the least self-aggrandizing player in pro sports. He is willing to lead by example nightly, but doesn’t like to talk about his greatness. His parents raised him well.

I’ve long said, if you put Harper and Trout side by side, and ask random strangers which one is the Mormon and which is the kid from Jersey, more than 50% would be wrong. Trout lacks that brash, outgoing nature Harper has.

He’s a pretty quiet guy especially to be a philly or Yankee fan… But he’ll choose Newport Beach, the weather, CA chill attitude (at times) and the non pressure the fans really put out there. He signs for the rest of his career at 35 mil a year.

Mike Trout will sign one final contract with the Phillies in two offseasons. Like Bruce Harper he will finish his career in Philadelphia but with a deserved higher AAV. The Phillies won’t stop there either. Kris Bryant will join the pair the following winter when he is eligible for free agency giving the Phillies three of the best and most marketable players in the game. The Phillies will become America’s team, the Yankees of past generations and this is coming from a 63-year old die-hard Chicago baseball fan who is thoroughly disgusted with both of his local clubs in the wake of their horrific offseasons. Judging from local social media, I am hardly alone in my thinking either.

There is a new generation of Steinbrenner in NY. George would have never allowed either Manny Machado or Bryce Harper to play anywhere other than Yankee Stadium.

Phillies primary owner and managing general partner John Middleton is MLB’s “new Steinbrenner”. He will spend his “stupid’ money wisely on the likes of local icon Mike Trout and Kris Bryant, joining Bryce Harper and transitioning the Phillies into the “new Yankees” or at least the NL version of them..

Trout also wants to win. That will be a tough proposition for the Angels in Trout’s final two contractual seasons with a strong Astros team in the AL West to say nothing of the Yankees and Red Sox in the East along with the Indians in the Central. The Angels will be fighting with the Rays, A’s, Twins and a perhaps a couple of other teams just to secure that final wild card spot in the AL over the next two seasons.

If he plans on moving the ballpark to tustin or Long Beach, then I can’t see him moving away from his franchise player.

As for the Astros, they will be more concerned with securing SS Carlos Correa and MLB’s next “Trout” in 3B Alex Bregman.

Trout will either remain with the Angels or go back to his offseason estate in New Jersey near Philadelphia.

I don’t know how anyone knows where the Angels will play in 2021, let alone who will be playing for them.

For those that don’t know, the Angels lease ends this year, and whatever happens, Mike Trout is going to be a big piece of the Angels future.

Pujols led to a 3 Billion dollar TV deal, for all those that think it was a bad signing…. it wasn’t.

Trout willing, Trout will lead to a new stadium deal. Moreno is going to offer him everything and lock him up while the Stadium negotiations are in progress.

He means the most to the Angels and the Angels will pay him the most.

Trout already has tremendous wealth. When he becomes a FA, he will be offered generational wealth by almost every team in the league. It won’t be about the highest offer. What Trout wants is to be a primary contributor on a perennial playoff team and win as many World Series as possible during his high level playing window. From 2021 to say 2026, only a select few teams will be able to offer this opportunity.

The Anaheim Angels might offer the most money, a new stadium, more endorsements, etc. What they can’t offer is the only thing Mike Trout wants. I can’t tell you who Trout will sign with, but I can tell you one team he won’t sign with. The Anaheim Angels.

      You people are nuts.

The Angels had the best record in baseball with Trout and if he didn’t go 1 for 12 in the playoffs, they might have won it all in 2014.

That last two seasons, they Angels opened the season with 11 starting pitchers. The only one not to go on the DL was Rickey Nolasco.

If they can get any kind of health from that staff, they’ll be well over 500 and in the hunt.

The Phillies Pythagorean W-L: last year was ten games under 500 and haven’t finished 500 since 2011.

Trout must say “Obviously” about 20 or more times in 2 minutes or less. Does he have ANY idea how STUPID he sounds when every 5th word out of his mouth is “Obviously”?
It’s not just Trout either. So many of these athletes do the same thing with the same word. It’s like they all graduated from the same “How to Interview” school. As of now the Angels have the best chance to sign Trout to a long term deal (extension or FA) but that’s only if they return to form, and they have 2 seasons to get there.

Outside of the Angels every other team is a question mark, I don’t buy the he’s definitely a Phillie because he’s from there. We’ve seen FA guarantees every year in every sport and almost all of them fail to materialize.

What I do know is that every team in baseball should at least be offering some sort of contract to Trout. And between him and Mookie one of the two (whoever signs second) will break the AAV and total value record.

How much do you know about the Angels? My guess is not much.

This is the last year of their stadium lease and Long Beach is interested, and it’s not idle talk.

Mike Trout is worth more to the Angel franchise than any other franchise in baseball, and there really isn’t a close second. He needs to be locked up before the stadium deal is locked up and that expires this year.

The Angels are going to offer him more money than anyone because he’s worth more to them.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are going to be spent on the next place the Angels play. And that begins with Mike Trout.

He’ll likely be extended this year, if he’s not extended near the time the Angels have a new stadium deal in place, he’s going somewhere else.
