Giants Place Derek Holland On 10-Day IL

By Jeff Todd | April 29, 2019 at 7:07pm CDT

The Giants have placed lefty Derek Holland on the 10-day injured list, the club announced and reporters including Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area tweeted. He’s dealing with a bruise to his left index finger.

It’s certainly possible this’ll be a brief IL stint of limited consequence. There’s no indication at present as to how long Holland will be sidelined, but it doesn’t sound like a particularly worrisome injury. That said, the Giants’ pitching staff remains one of the most interesting in baseball from a hot-stove perspective, so it’s worth a quick look at the move.

The 32-year-old Holland has struggled to a 5.34 ERA in his first 32 frames, with home runs (seven already) and walks (16) largely to blame. But he’s also striking out 11.3 per nine on an 11.4% swinging-strike rate, with ramped-up usage of his slider helping to change his profile. Holland could yet be a mid-season trade candidate if he can refine his new approach.

For the time being, Ty Blach is coming up to take the open roster spot. But as Pavlovic notes on Twitter, the IL placement may end up opening the door for former 14th overall pick Tyler Beede. As he closes in on his 26th birthday, Beede could get his second shot at the majors after a rough debut last year.

The Giants are said to be pleased with what they’ve seen from Beede thus far in 2019. Indeed, he has run up 22 2/3 innings of 1.99 ERA pitching with 13.5 K/9 against 4.0 BB/9 this year at Triple-A. At some point, the Giants will want to get a full MLB look at the former Vanderbilt hurler.

Perfect opportunity to call up Beede and they call up Blach. The Giants are too good at making awful decisions.

Why in the world would the Giants call up Beede at this point when he wouldn’t be scheduled to pitch until this weekend. It makes way more sense to bring up an extra arm for the next three games against LA, especially when its someone who has flat out dominated the Dodgers throughout his career like Blach.

They don’t need another bullpen piece, they could use another bench bat to go along with the 5 sorry ones they have now. Williamson for instance is blistering LH pitching and LA is LH heavy.

Good points, but there certainly is a good chance that the Dodgers knock Blach around for 7 earned runs in two innings.

SMDH- Another stupid transaction by the Giants, bringing up soft tossing Ty blach? That’s not going to help you win games. 4.34 era 18inn 26 hits in AAA. While Tyler beede is dominating, showing he’s ready. They sure are headed for 1st pick in next year’s draft.

Get a clue ? You see the box score in tonight’s game?????? Soft tossing blach gets his a** handed to him. When the dodgers are killing lefties this year and you have a lefty who has no movement on his fastball, all below avg offspeed pitches, and sits around 87-89mph = bad results bub. So you get a clue son.

I don’t think the Giants want to win games, honestly. GM didn’t do much at all in the off-season.

May be interested in the top draft pick next year! Who knows lol. But my hopes for the team full of vets getting going this year and winning some ball games is slowly going out the window. Especially if Bumgarner can’t pick up his control, he may not even get a great offer this offseason.

SocalBlake is spot-on. Previous San Fran post on this site was all about searching for an outfielder. What happened to the entire offseason? No trade? Few low-risk signings not cutting it? What was your goal for 2019?

Nevermind, some Giants fans seem to think they are doing something this year. I now fully understand Dodgers fans.

I think it’s pretty obvious what the goals were this year with the unmovable contracts. Try to win with what you have. Hopefully players get hot and other teams want them at the trade deadline. That was my hopes as a fan. Can’t say we sat on our hands, we did give a pretty hefty offer to Harper for the team to build around. Let’s see what happens. Couple years we’ll be back. No doubt.

Hefty offer for Harper? No. Pandering offer to please the fanbase more like it.

SF did absolutely nothing this offseason to show they want to win. They did nothing to show they want to win a couple years from now. They straddled the middle; a very dangerous place to be. You will not be back in a couple years.

And Just because they didn’t do what u wanted doesn’t meant they didn’t do what was best for the future of the organization…
I think you’ll be surprised how good they could be in a couple years under Zaidi

What I wanted? Not a Giants fan, sorry.

Faidi Zaidi isn’t getting this team to the promise land in a couple years. History has proven:

          A) Most ex-A’s executives fall flat on their face outside of Oakland
          B) San Fran will still be saddled with bad contracts
          C) They will need more minor league talent than they currently have
          D) C would happen if they traded a couple current players on the major league roster not named Buster Posey
          E) Every positional player except Duggar is over 28, and Duggar isn’t a lock as a future piece
          F) Zero position prospects ready for MLB at AAA or AA. Joey Bart in A-ball.
          G) Minor League affiliates hitting nothing except Sacramento, where everyone hits because it’s the PCL!
          H) You’ll need to deal some young arms in the system for hitting help
          I) Why didn’t Faidi Zaidi deal some young arms for outfield help? Maybe those arms aren’t highly regarded? Or did he not give the effort needed in the offseason?

Don’t buy into the Harper narrative. Only Giant fans or gullible baseball people would believe the Harper stuff. Giants were using Harper to sell some tickets. They were never interested nor were they prepared to spend over the luxury tax. They were doing that to make people believe it. That is why they did close to nothing (Parra) in the offseason.

          Trimreaper, your dead on man!
The Giants farm is by far the worst. Outside of Jalen Miller and Frankie tostado, nobody is doing anything and they don’t have anything promising on the rise to the big leagues. Duggar would be a bench bat on any other team. All the Veterans are aging and declining pretty badly. The entire farm needs re-vamped. They have so many older players in the lower levels. They have a couple of put hung prospects that could be up this year or next (coonrad, beede, Anderson, and Webb.) Melvon adon could be up this year if they deal some of their bullpen pieces.

I don’t see giants being good for many years to come.

Everything you stated in your Novel was not even close to being a fact! You should read up on the unmovable contracts this club has! And apparently your thoughts on Zaidi is way out in left field. He sure stacked the Dodgers up didn’t he? You should go troll on your own clubs site! Oh and what do you expect out of a club that has three rings? Can’t win em all, every club has transitions, when was the last World Series your club has won? And how many in five years? Good luck !

You needed back to back comments to gather whatever thoughts you needed to back your nothing argument? Well done, I think….

The fact you give Zaidi the credit for the Dodgers success proves you are a know-nothing.

So if I am wrong, Parra was not the only outfielder in the offseason Zaidi obtained to play in San Fran? Everything wrong? Yeah, your opinion is null and void as is your delusional outlook on the Giants. Good luck holding on to friends.

Dude, I love the game of baseball and people like you who are band wagon fans of the game are a joke! You can sit here talking trash on a team you know nothing about, when the team you’re talking about has more championship rings then any other ball club this past ten years! Clubs go through transitions after they sell the farm to go after a ring. Good luck bozo, and keep trolling.

I think all fans begin the season thinking maybe their team will have the right players with chemistry to go on a run, and this year was no different for the Giants. My thoughts quickly dissipated by the play of the 2019 club. They need hitters in the outfield as Duggar and Parra just aren’t keeping the line moving. The decisions by management are confusing and Bochy has proven his style of managing and philosophies are futile (no disrespect toward the skipper). However in tonight’s game versus the hated ones, the shark is pitching shutout ball into the sixth inning and Bochy removes him for whatever reason. Watson comes in a promptly gives up two runs. SMH

Parra needs to be DFA’d. He hasn’t shown anything in the way of hitting, and since he seems to be a starting outfielder right now, there are several better options, like getting belt more reps there and starting Austin at 1st. Or, call up your pick of williamson and slater, who both have OPSes over .900 in AAA. This is a year to see what we have, not a year to continually play bad old veterans with no trade value.

I’m the first to admit, the Giants are a tough watch. I’ll tape the games and watch later if they’re competitive. That being said, Holland is a lefty that went to the IL. Logically, you replace him with a lefty. Depending on days off, they may not need another starter. They want Beede to continue improving and lower his walk rate.

We have to realize that the Giants are handcuffed with bad contracts. The guys who are movable are struggling, Panik, Bumgarner, Pillar, Solarte, Parra, Watson. What do you want Zaidi to do? He’s brought in 5-7 outfielders and nobody is doing much.

If they recall Williamson, this is it. He’s got no options so produce or get released.

The real problem is everyone is hitting.200. Can’t win with that. I thought they had real good at bats against LA last night. Better approaches and hit a lot of balls hard but they ended up stranding a bunch of runners. 1-10 or whatever they were with RISP ain’t going to get it done.

If you’re going to get upset, get upset at the core players, that’s who is killing them right now and they all have huge contracts and no trade clauses but yeah, let’s blame Zaidi. Call Evans and fire him…. again!
