Injury Notes: Zimmermann, Smyly, Yankees

By Jeff Todd | April 26, 2019 at 12:26am CDT

The Tigers are holding their breath after seeing starter Jordan Zimmermann depart with discomfort in his right elbow, as Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press was among those to report on Twitter. More on his outlook will be known after he’s evaluated tomorrow, but it seems there’s a bit of worry from within the organization. Zimmermann’s tenure in Detroit has been nothing short of disastrous; he entered the season with a cumulative 5.24 ERA and is sitting on a 5.93 mark through six starts this year. The club owes him $25MM this year and the same for 2020.

More on the health front:

  • Rangers lefty Drew Smyly says he thinks he’ll be capable of returning after skipping only a starter or two, as MLB.com’s TR Sullivan tweets. He explains that he is just dealing with arm fatigue in his first full season back following Tommy John surgery. That’s reasonably promising news, standing alone. Trouble is, the Texas organization really needs innings right away. Prospect Taylor Hearn was bombed tonight, leaving the bullpen to pick up the pieces. As Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News notes on Twitter, veteran righty Jeanmar Gomez took the brunt of the damage and may now be at risk of losing his spot on the roster as the club scrambles to cover innings in the coming days.
  • With loads of significant players on the injured list, there are always quite a few Yankees updates of note. MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch rounds up the latest in one concise tweet. Aaron Hicks and Troy Tulowitzki both appear close to full (minor-league) game action, which suggests both may not be far off from a return to the MLB roster. Miguel Andujar is slated to appear at third base in extended spring action tomorrow. That represents the latest promising sign as he attempts to stave off surgery to address a shoulder injury that isn’t preventing him from hitting but has hampered his throwing. Just how that’ll all turn out remains to be seen, but it appears there is enough promise that he’s going to try to ramp back up at the hot corner.
  • As for star Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton, the biceps issue that drove him to the injured list appears to be sorted. But he’s now dealing with a new shoulder malady. Per Andy Martino of SNY.tv, the hope is that this new problem will only extend his absence by a week or so. It’s all a bit foggy but seems less than concerning on the whole, at least in comparison to the club’s overall injury malaise. Having treaded water admirably thus far, the Yanks can go another week without Stanton. They are still in good position in the AL East — so long as their health fortunes finally turn, at least.

As bad as Z has been, they can only hope he is injured for good and insurance takes over!

Sad but true. Hated this signing when it happened, because they jumped the gun and threw a Brinks truck at him when nobody else was even making offers yet.

Actually, that is just Wrong. He signed what was projected for him in free agency. No one threw a brinks truck at him. The Tigers had a need, with Scherzer out the door. He looked like a good option at a reasonable price for what he was able to provide. He wanted to play near home, so no bidding war happened. and there was no talk of him being overpaid when he signed. He simply got hurt.

Nope, at the time his contract was way larger than his projection. It was not reasonable at all, the Tigers overpaid to avoid any bidding war. They purposely gave him a contract he couldn’t turn down to fill the starter role.

He didn’t pitch bad tonight, at all. At least he’s tried to keep himself fairly healthy n in shape not like some others like Panda n his brief time in Boston.

Oh Todd, why are you picking on CC again. He’s always been a big guy and it has never prevented him from winning. Yet you keep whining.

Comparing Panda, a few year wonder and more year embarrassment to CC, a future hall of farmer shows your lack of understanding combined with your personal hard on. I don’t recall ONE teammate vouching for Panda. The teams that CC played on all stand beside him in support.

STOP before you play your hatred card of his old battle with addiction. He worked for his sobriety and returned to being a very productive pitcher in he twilight of his career.

Time to find someone else to pick on.

such a shame moving Gomez to the 9th killed off his career. also a shame we didnt learn that lesson with Neris. The moral of the story is dont move a good setup man to the 9th just because he sets up well.

Sound like Smiley might need to skip more than a starter or two but is trying to get back to help the team out of a jam. Which sounds like he will further aggravate a developing injury. I see bad things coming, unfortunately.

The Chris Davis Contract is Bad. But Zimmermann is really up there in bad pitcher contracts.

Giants have Cain’s. Zitos. Cuetos. And Samdj. So I’ve seen a few. . .

Any thoughts on others I can’t think of. ?

Chris sale. Not looking bueno so far.

Detroit gave that terrible deal to Sanchez but let Sherzer get away. I thought the Sherzer deal was rough but if he never played another game it may still have been worth it for Washington. Zimmerman deal was a desperate act by Illich before he passed away trying to buy a contender. You can’t fault the guy for chasing his dream but the Zimmerman warning signs were there regarding a steep decline on the horizon.

It’s a bad deal because they’re now in rebuild and he is basically an innings eater and no matter how poorly he is doing the expectation will be put him out there and save the pen. Pitch count and innings won’t matter. I hope he is ok and it isn’t worst case but I worry if it isn’t worst case then he will be in for 2 really rough years till his deal expires.

What signs are you talking about? JZ was a pretty good pitcher with Nationals and Nats fans were bummed that he wasn’t brought back for the deal he eventually signed.. besides TJS, he was a very consistent, solid pitcher.

The Tigers signed Zimm for a contract that was actually less than the MLBTR projection which was pretty accurate at the time. Zimm has been hurt and unable to get healthy for any significant amount of time. It has been a bad contract but Davis, Zito, etc were healthy and simply declined quickly. You can’t compare hurt with just plain bad.

Tigers: Miguel Cabrera’s is the worst in MLB at this time. Next comes Jordan Zimmermann. The Tigers are still paying Prince Fielder and Justin Verlander. They got lucky when Justin Upton opted out and signed an even more excessive contract with the Angels.

Speaking of the Angels, they may be the king of bad contracts:
Not only is Upton’s extreme, the Angels spent a great deal for Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, CJ Wilson, Torii Hunter, Vernon Wells (assumed), Jon Garland, Scott Kazmir, Gary Matthews Jr, Jered Weaver (final years) and Zack Cozart while not getting the superstar quality they paid for.

David Price’s contract will be viewed the same…especially once his health breaks down. I’m not wis
Hint that—he’s had signs in the past and has a huge mileage with high stress innings from earlier in his career.

Speaking of bad contracts induced by Trader Dave how about the guy playing 1B for the tigers? Miggy’s contract has around 3-4 more years and he is 3-4 years past his prime.

Hearn only has a 108 ERA. If I received 100+ on a test, I would be buying rounds for everyone. Seriously, this guy IS a major league pitcher and will settle down and do good. I hope they give another chance to him.

I think we will give Hearn a couple more shots, He deserves the shot, and I for one would like to see him do good, I also believe we needs to pick up a work horse like Big game James to eat up some innings or were gonna need about 10 more relievers before the all star break. We can’t give up 14 runs a night and give a pep talk and play the next day, we need a few changes, We gotta get a centerfielder with some pop, yes we’re scoring runs but we also have a couple guys not contributing. It’s gonna be a long year if we don’t make a few changes.

Taylor Hearn was simply not ready for “prime time.” Toiling in AAA or AA would be the best option for him for the rest of the year. Why would Jonathan Daniels shove this “unready” prospect against a veteran Seattle lineup is beyond me?

Now here is the truth…with unprecedented number of injuries, pissing money away on Machado or Harper would have put the Yankees is a real bind.

So gees, have fun in Flushing.

Once again you are astute and correct.

The signing of tulo was a nonsensical distraction and cash is on record as saying they signed him to be the starting short stop and gave him a no trade clause- which is smart because no other team would trade for him!

Really? You actually think Cashman was counting on Tulo? Didn’t the LeMahieu signing show he wasn’t counting on Tulo? And the fact that Torres can play SS means Cashman didn’t have to count on Tulo. Tulo was a low risk signing. He was never going to be counted on.

How could tulo be low risk if they had to sign someone else for 12 mil a year as insurance?

That is totally illogical and is a microcosm of cash’s horrible offseason

You missed the point. DJL was going to be signed no matter what, and Tulo was a no risk minimum contract flyer. DJL was signed as a starter quality utility guy that could plug any infield hole

          1. If Tulo works out, awesome because he’s cheap

          2. If he doesn’t play outstanding but he’s healthy and average then great, because Didi is coming back eventually

          3. Worst possible case scenario you have DJL and Torres and you are perfectly fine

shield- i am not the one who made the comment about signing DJL as insurance- badfinger did ( “Didn’t the LeMahieu signing show he wasn’t counting on Tulo”). My point was if that is the case you have wasted at the least a roster spot and at the worst $$$ that could have used elsewhere.

The didi thing coming back requires a leap of faith. I’m not there yet. Plus with all due respect- didi is 3 years older than manny and won’t come cheap either. so let’s see. I am withholding judgement other than to say, the idea that tulo is an MLB SS is absurd
