Miguel Andujar Diagnosed With Labrum Tear

By Jeff Todd | April 1, 2019 at 8:35pm CDT

The Yankees placed infielder Miguel Andujar on the 10-day injured list, as first reported by Jack Curry of the YES Network (Twitter link). He’ll be replaced on the active roster by Tyler Wade.

It emerged after testing that Andujar has suffered a “small labrum tear,” manager Aaron Boone conveyed to reporters including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch (Twitter link). The injury, which was suffered when Andujar dove back to the bag on a pick-off attempt, could require season-ending surgery. While the club will first attempt non-surgical treatment, it’s clearly a significant injury that will need to be handled with care.

It’s the second injury-related loss of the day for the Yanks, who already put star slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the shelf. The organization does have some intriguing depth options, but it obviously would prefer to have its first-choice lineup on the field as much as possible in a highly competitive American League East. For the time being, solid veteran DJ LeMahieu will step in at the hot corner, but that’ll take him out of the rotation at the other infield spots.

The long-term repercussions are even more worrying. Andujar, 24, was one of baseball’s best rookies last year. While he’s a work in progress defensively, Andujar posted a healthy .297/.328/.527 slash and launched 27 home runs in his first full season as a big-leaguer.

This wasn’t a run and slide, this was a pick off play. So he was diving back to the bag not sliding. You can’t dive back to the bag feet first. Do you think we should remove pick off attempts from the game, or perhaps leading off the bag? Because head first is the only option in this situation. No one likes injuries and you want to minimize them, but they are part of sports. You can’t change the rules every time someone gets hurt.

HEADFIRST slide. Remove it, from the game

I blame Andujar, sliding head first.

“Why do they keep doing it?” Trainers don’t teach players sliding with your feet reduces injury risk?

        • GarryHarris

Pete Rose and Rickey Henderson slid head first for years with no severe injuries.

        • Chris Giarraputo

Miggy is no Rickey or Rose. Miggy is not as athletic or has Rose’s “energy” they had back then when a few greenies can make u feel like Superman. These guys are playing slower in every way.
Doesn’t hardy slide headfirst into 1st base or did he smarten up? It’s coaching. Like movie Major league- push ups for every headfirst slide like Willie Mays Hayes popping ball up.

        • VinnyB

Wow! Ban headfirst slides because occasionally someone gets injured. This country really has gotten soft.

        • jbigz12

I think to reduce injury andujar should just stand on first base with no lead. You don’t want him stubbing his toe on a slide back to first either.

        • davidcoonce74

Ray Fosse would disagree highly with this statement. His career was basically ruined by Rose “sliding” into home in a completely meaningless game.

As far as sliding headfirst or feetfirst, there’s injury risk either way. Some people who measure this stuff say that there’s no advantage to sliding headfirst in terms of being quicker to the bag, although it obviously allows more control about actually touching the bag.

        • jbigz12

I can see some merit in the danger of a headfirst slide on a play where you’re running full speed but if we’re talking about a headfirst dive back to first I’m not really buying the danger of that.

        • tfranco

Have you ever played baseball, or seen a game?!? You don’t slide feet first on a pick off play. Injury could have happened diving for a ball. Are you going to say not to dive for a ball?

        • Begamin

I mean, i dont see any other team dealing with injuries like the Yankees have the last two seasons. These are all muscle tears and inflammation. Its not like when Judge got hit by a pitch and its a freak accident. The guys are getting hurt just playing baseball. Severino, Betances, Andujar, Hicks, Stanton, all injured simply playing baseball. The strength and conditioning trainers have to be doing something wrong.

        • tfranco

There are 45 guys in baseball, excluding Yankees, that have similar injuries. This also excludes all players recovering from surgeries of any kind. Yankees are not alone in this. Nothing trainers could do about most of these injuries.

        • Begamin

          tfranco
Yankees stand alone at the most people on the IL.
When Stanton gets injured simply swinging the bat, Sev by simply pitching, Hicks by simply showing up, Betances by simply pitching… they obviously arent conditioned. Is it a coincidence that all these injuries are happening so early? When your team is limping coming out of Spring Training (you know, the moment players report and trainers get a hold of them) you have to look at the training staff.

Guess you can’t decide whether you believe in stats or not…..DJ is a former 2016 batting champion and 2 time Allstar… if you think his bat leaves a lot to be desired, then you don’t know anything about baseball.
While he may not be a prolific homer hitter, the Yankees need a hitter like him to keep the line moving much more than clearing the bases and adding 150+ K’s.

Rocky you have identified the difference between Fangraphs/WAR baseball and real live baseball. Fangraphs used the actual 2018 stats to determine that the NYY were a 104 win team and BOS a 97 win team –based on WAR.– a miss by 15 games of the real results.

Fangraphs used the same WAR approach to determine that the 2014 & 2015 KCR teams that came within one game of back to back WS wins should have had a losing record BOTH years.

The Brian Kenny/Fangraphs method believes you need to look at the stats without knowing how, when and where they were accumulated. Also , that a K is just another out. When you watch the games you understand the value of situational hitting and the harm done by players who strikeout trying to hit a home run when a hit or a walk is what is needed.

          \

For those of us who actually watch games we see

        • TrimReaper

Thank you Rocky. Nevermind JDGout. He cheers for a team with cheap owners and players not capable of hitting .300. Infact the Blue Jays have been on a no-hit watch at least 3 games out of 5 to begin the year.

Could they use a Gold Glove winning .300 hitter? Absolutely not! There are plenty of guys hitting below .150 he’d rather have.

        • JDGoat

All it takes is one look at his baseball reference page. If you don’t know what a good batting line looks like, that’s on you guys not me. The initial poster said not to be worried about the Yanks since he hits .300. Ok anything else? No.

I know you don’t like being objective Trim, but how does the team I cheer for impact DJ Lemahieu’s below average bat? Look at what’s being said, not who is posting it. And when you start out with name calling, it’s clear you don’t have much of an argument to build off of.

        • TrimReaper

Considering Rocky and JML validated what I’ve cbeen conveying to you for months, I would disagree with your inaccurate assessment over my objectivity. I would also point out that you’ve been quite combative since I joined this site. Hypocrisy is a practice you are trying to perfect.

You cheer for a team with deep pockets with no desire to spend or sign draft picks or win. Yet despite siding with the billionaires you attempt to seek and destroy those speaking positively about owners. Spare me your whining over name calling. All I did was point out that the Jays could use a .300 hitter or 5 in their lineup. You’d rather buy low and sell high. That hasn’t worked during the Rogers era. You will never understand.

        • jbigz12

DJ lemahieu’s been an above average hitter in the major leagues in exactly one season. The season he happened to win the batting title. He’s coming off one of his poorest offensive showings. Wouldn’t be real hard to frame him as a “buy low” signing by the Yankees. Idk what your problem is with JD but it shouldn’t be about Lemahieu. Who again has been an above league average hitter exactly one time. The one time he did that he did win a batting title which is probably why you think he’s consistently a good hitter. He is an interesting signing if he can raise launch angle as he made a lot of hard contact last year but I’m guessing you didn’t know or care about any of that.

        • TrimReaper

DJ Lemahieu and I went to the same baseball school. Yes, I do know what he can bring to the table. Not looking at WAR and other fraud stats, you and JD wouldn’t have a clue what a guy like Lemahieu can bring to the table.

Every team can use, and needs, a DJ Lemahieu type player. JMI1950 made a point on-top of Rocky’s point. Unfortunately if you are all about WAR and the other statistical bullcrap then you will believe what you believe, and I along with those guys will think differently. Difference is, hitting is how winning is done (along with stud pitching). Always has, always will. Lemahieu hits .300 in New York and he’ll be a stud. At least use the Colorado effect as an argument next time you want to crap on DJ.

        • petrie000

Pretty sure DJL is about 30 years to young for your ‘school’ of baseball…

He’s pretty good at getting to first base. Everything after that is where he’s lacking. Anyone who follows baseball even casually should be able to see that that is a bit of a negative…

Trim, Im a big DJ fan. One of most underrated

Trim, stats you hate so much, say your boy, DJ, plays otherworldly Defense. UZR and DRS

DJ LeMahieu Best 2B defense on planet
          +18 DRS and +11 UZR. (2018)
          +8 DRS and +4.4 UZR. (2017)

          •Never had negative DRS.
          • Only once had negative UZR.
•Past 5 of seven yrs: eight or more DRS
•Past 3 of six: 10 or more DRS.

Now, Yanks are asking him to play 3rd. So far, eye test tell me he can duplicate those GODLY defensive stats at 3rd too.

          The hitting is a bonus.

That will be for pitchers only and happen in 2020. Closes the loophole that so many teams used…..shuttling pitchers back and forth.
2020 will also be the expanded roster, smaller September roster, 3 batter rule and designation of pitcher/position player.

May be an unpopular opinion but I don’t mind the 10 day DL abuse for a pitcher. Gives a AAA arm another major league paycheck and doesn’t really hurt anybody. The 26 man roster fixes that problem as well though.

I think correcting English and grammar can help prevent/correct misunderstandings, which is helpful in all conversations. I’ve seen so many interactions here where someone says something, it becomes misunderstood, and then someone argues against a point that was never made and it just snowballs from there. That said, I do agree that people are being nitpicky. I thought it was pretty clear what the OP was referring to, even if he did forget to hit the reply button.

Are we back to the days of delusional yankee fans thinking all other teams are falling over themselves to give them their best players in exchange for their scraps? Frazier has been a busy so far, too many injuries have prevented him from proving what he can do. Same story with bird, at least he has hit the little time he has been healthy. At this point both are nothing but filler in any kind of trade not the main pieces. At some point a bit of reality has to enter the delusional realm yankee fans call home

There is no such thing as non-surgical treatment for a torn labrum. You can function just fine with a labral tear but some days it will feel fine and others will feel awful. Once the cartilage that makes up the labrum is torn…it’s torn. It remains one of the worst injuries for a throwing athlete and extremely misunderstood by those who ve never experienced it.

Left shoulder is more important for swinging, right shoulder is more important for throwing. Either way he will need a long time to recover. It his right shoulder though.

Yankees needed to revamp their coaching staff. A future possible star doesn’t need to headfirst slide in Early April. He has a bad Injury. If he could barely play 3rd b4 due to throwing errors, good luck now. Torres now has to learn a new position again. They are going to screw him up too. Too bad Miggy lost the only award he will ever get- 2018 ROY which was pure politics. Feel bad for the kid. Bird had same injury 2 years ago. How did he make out? He looked like he was swinging a 10lb bat last year. And he doesn’t need to make constant long throws. Hope it’s very very mild and/or Miggy is an animal and heals like a beast

This wasn’t a run and slide, this was a pick off play. So he was diving back to the bag not sliding. You can’t dive back to the bag feet first. Head first is the only option in this situation. Outside of instructing players to never lead off a base, which every player does 100% of the time, I’m not sure what you think the coaches should have done here.

      Reply
    • rocky7

Don’t think Torres need to learn a new position….he stays at 2nd or short….this is why they got DJ Lam….he looked great at 3rd and he becomes the defacto 3rd baseman and Wade becomes the swing man…he’s capable of playing all 3 infield positions in question…no need to panic and make a move for somebody outside the organization at this time…..if there’s still a need at the trade deadline, then there will be plenty of players available to make a move with.

Right now the Yankees are like the Angels. #1 pitcher gone. #2 hitter gone. #3 hitter gone.

The Yankees also have their #4 hitter. It’s hard to win that way. Few teams can win with those types of injuries.

Unlike the angels the Yankees have DJ lemahieu on their bench and Clint Frazier sitting in the minor leagues. They’ll also add Gio sometime soon. Not exactly as good as the guys their replacing but you’d be hard pressed to find another team who has backups so capable.

If he does require shoulder surgery, I wonder if that ends his career as a third baseman; he was so bad there anyway, but then it really creates a logjam at 1B/DH for the Yankees in the future.

I would think that him getting the surgery to fix his arm increases his chances to stay a 3B. If he doesnt get the surgery it might be safe to say he doesnt intend on throwing much for a long long while.
