Luis Severino Headed For MRI

By Jeff Todd | April 8, 2019 at 4:37pm CDT

Yankees starter Luis Severino is slated to undergo an MRI and further medical examination, manager Aaron Boone tells reporters including George A. King III of the New York Post (via Twitter). Severino has been on the injured list since the start of the season for inflammation in his rotator cuff.

Severino’s rehab was “stalled” over the past week, as Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News puts it (Twitter link), with Severino not yet feeling up to mound work. The lack of progress was evidently worrying enough that Dr. Christopher Ahmad — a noted surgeon and the Yankees’ head physician — will take a closer look.

Notably, there’s no indication that Severino has experienced new discomfort or a specific setback. That’s the silver lining. But this is obviously a suboptimal development for a club that has been racked by injuries and would prefer to have Severino leading the rotation.

The hope all along has been that Severino would rest up a bit, work through a progression, and make it back to the MLB hill by early May. The timeline hasn’t yet changed significantly, but it seems he’s now behind schedule. And it remains to be seen what the imaging will show.

It is funny how if one happens to just mention the number of players on the IL at least one Yanks fan takes it as an attack on the team and of course you are labeled a hater. Actually having a winning record is a testament to their depth.

Right? I’m a Sox fan but mostly a baseball fan. I’ll acknowledge the fact that the Yankees have a good record having half their team compared to the Sox having their full team & can barely win.

But after that they told me that the open gave bad images and my last knee operation and a back operation I had to have full MRI’s. It’s really like being in a closed coffin with loud banging for 40 min of hell.

Except at this point a team is lucky to get 2/3 of a season out of anyone by the time they’re up to speed. 18mil at this point is like a prorated 24 mil, then add the cbt penalty yanks would pay…

Probably a prorated 30mil contract equivalent for keuchel is a huge overpay when you think about it

It’s understandable some fans feel that way.

Yankees have more money than anyone in MLB. Then for the last 3 years they looked up at the red sox who both outspent the yankees, but also won the division in those years.

Not saying the young players don’t have talent, but, had the boss still been alive you know payroll would’ve been higher and better pitching would’ve been signed – cbt tax be damned.

Compared to that, yes, cheap is a valid argument.

Is anyone going to answer Warning Track’s question or are the two of you going to chirp all day? Because given the Yankees payroll over the next few years I’d say cheap is the wrong word to describe the Bronx.

At the very least, Yankees decided to “spread the wealth” on short term deals. Happ, Sabathia, Gardner, Ottavino, Britton. They could have cut loose CC and Gardner and either one of the relievers to sign Corbin or another gun for the rotation while using a AAA arm plus Frazier. Regardless, the word cheap does not ring true.

        No insults necessary.

This team should have never brought back Brett Gardner and CC there were better options out there.

Patrick Corbin was out there for cash just like the rest of the FA starters.
You could have had Manny and or Harper for money as well.

Their SP rotation was not good going into the season and they could have used the FA market to put this team over the edge they instead went with slapping crap against the wall and see what stuck.

Same sob story with this team/ The Yankees have become cheap!

Signing/resigning to premium relievers and trading their best prospect for a solid #2 starter isn’t exactly throwing crap against the wall. That would be what Texas did. I would have preferred Robinson to Ottavino but apparently Cashman saw it differently (or perhaps Robinson preferred Philly) but other than that Cashman did a decent job. Gardner was supposed to be a 4th OF which his defense only makes him a solid choice for that role and CC deserves one more cheap year in the Bronx after pitching for them for 10 years and being the de-facto captain of the pitchers. The Yankees have so many good pitching prospects in the minors that atleast a couple of them will turn into something. Nobody could have forseen all of the injuries and even with them I am sure the Yankees will be in the playoff picture in September. I would rather see them as a complete team and firing on all cylinders then than in April.

“”trading their best prospect for a solid #2” Paxton doesn’t have the track record to be considered a #2. The bringing back of CC and Gardner was ridiculous.

Cheap is relative to what you compare to.

Were the yankees cheap compared to the cbt? I guess not.

Were the yankees cheap on pitching compared to what the Boss would’ve done when he was alive and NY regularly reeled off strings of championships? YES, the yankees were cheap compared to that – which, after decades of win at all costs is what longtime fans expect, ESPECIALLY after seeing Boston win the division 3 years straight.

Well this is just wonderful. All that talk all offseason about how we needed pitching, just to go out and get one guy (Paxton) while the rest of the rotation is hurt or underperforming. Perhaps a better offer to Corbin would have negated some of the injury issues, but Kuechel is the best thing out there now and he wants way too much money.

MRIs are never a good thing, especially when a player is already hurt and had to be shut down leading up to this. I smell surgery for him AND Andujar, which means this is effectively a lost season. We can slug our way to all the wins we want in the regular season, pitching and defense win championships and we don’t have the former. The latter is questionable after the Baltimore series.

And this is why young players sign those deals. They may lose future earnings, and in some cases a substantial amount, but for pitchers especially, they’re is no guarantee of the future. He’s got enough guaranteed money that if he never throws again, he and his family are set for life. Hopefully that is not the case, but is the perfect example of what can happen.

Supposedly. And a second one before starting spring training.

However, if there was an injury starting or lurking at the end of last season any internal inflammation or similar signs may have subsided and looked more like minor wear and tear on the imaging – which at his age might not have been as extensive to begin with.

The Yankees rank tenth in payroll for the 25 man team. $108 mil. They are number 1 when it comes to injured payroll $87 million. I think so far the best bargain has been DJ LeMahieu! I guess you can call them cheap if you compare them to the Boss! You really cannot blame Yankee fans for calling Hal cheap because Hal told the fans first we need to get under the salary cap and then we will go after the FA market. So signing Gardy and CC has not been so endearing to the fans.

I don’t want to hear about Happ (he’s terrible and expensive). The money spent on CC, Gardy and Happ is about 35 mil. How’s that working out for us?

Yankees aren’t sold on Fraizer yet and just because he’s teraing the cover off the ball don’t give me he’s the next Donnie Baseball. If the Yankees trusted him in LF they would have never signed Gardner fact!

Volt both the Yankees and their fans are not sold on Volt either. The Yankee should have went out and got a 1b this base off season. What this team is missing is two LH power threats. Amazing they have no LF bats for YS INSANE! Bird went 0-4 yesterday he’s the new love affair like Gardner.

Paxton is a number 3 Yankees need a 1-2 Punch Servy and ??? Opps for that.

I like Hicks but I wouldn’t have jumped on signing him for 7..

Funny how you can’t see the elephants in the room.

i’m a huge yankee fan but even i can’t help but laugh at the fact that the first two guys they extended in ages (Sevy and Hicks) both basically died before the ink was dry on their new deals. At this point i don’t expect to see either of them before June 1st. like something out of a dark comedy.

its a joke, its all a joke. mother forgive me.

The Yankees will not win a World Series until Bird, Gardner & Cc are off the team.

its not just that they are on the team or being cheap. its how he spent the money. thus far the great bullpen has already cost us 4 games. happ at 17 mil is ridiculous. gardy at 9.5 is insane and CC at 8 a joke. All that cash spent could have been used far far better.

thus far only DJ (who i was opposed too) is performing.

It so frustrating as this was the moment to put daylight between the yanks and everyone else.
