Blue Jays Select Contract Of Ryan Feierabend, DFA Javy Guerra

By Jeff Todd and TC Zencka | May 18, 2019 at 12:15pm CDT

The Blue Jays selected the contract of southpaw Ryan Feierabend, manager Charlie Montoyo tells reporters including Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca (Twitter links). Javy Guerra is the roster casualty, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of sportsnet.ca (via Twitter).

Feierabend makes for quite a story. The 33-year-old last appeared in the majors — or in the affiliated ranks — in the 2014 season. Since his debut way back in 2006, Feierabend owns a 7.15 ERA in 113 1/3 innings at the game’s highest level.

In the intervening years, Feierabend has plied his trade in Korea. In four campaigns there, he worked to a 4.21 ERA with 7.2 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 over 793 1/3 innings. In 16 2/3 innings this year at Triple-A Buffalo, Feierabend has allowed five earned runs on 15 hits (three of them home runs) with a 13:6 K/BB ratio.

It’s always interesting to see a pitcher make it back to the majors after a long layoff. Better still, in this case the hurler in question sports a rare left-handed knuckler.

Guerra, 33, gets the tough luck DFA after 11 outings with the Blue Jays. Per Nicholson-Smith, Guerra asked to eat innings when he sensed a roster move might be near. It’s both a savvy and gracious move on Guerra’s part, as his scoreless three-inning appearance yesterday helped save the arms of the rest of the pen while getting himself one last chunky appearance before the ax.

He pitched well for the Jays outside of a rough two-game patch versus Tampa where he was tagged for 5 runs in 1 1/3 innings. Away from the Rays, Guerra gave up just a single earned run in 9 appearances that spanned 12 2/3 innings. For his career, the former Dodger draft pick is 8-11 in 212 appearances out of the pen with 32 saves and a 3.44 ERA.

Followed him while watching the KBO, if nothing else fun to watch! Hope Andrew Farrell chimes in with more insight!

Where does one get access to KBO games on TV? Or did you spend time there?

Well, I’m good at it. What makes Feierabend particularly interesting is that he pretty much scrapped his slider for his Knuckleball and uses it as a secondary pitch almost as much as he uses his changeup. Statiz is good for that, but it’ll drive you nuts at first trying to make sense of it.

Dude lost 20 games in the KBO in 2016. But good for him making it back after a long layoff. These stories are always nice to see.

We still use wins and losses as a meaningful metric?

There should be a weekly contest to guess the next retread starter the Jays will sign that week.

Needs to be a 3-part quiz:

      – name the new pitcher
      – name the pitcher they are replacing
      – reason the pitcher is being replaced (injury, trade, general suckage)

Feierabend is still playing? I remember him as a Mariner prospect waaaaaay back in 2004-‘05. From what I remember, he seemed to be a batting practice pitcher. Hopefully that’s changed?

By finding ways to get guys out Feierabend is back in the big leagues. Blue Jays AAA pitching staff has been atrocious.

12 career losses vs 316 career losses. It’s clear who the better pitcher is based on that stat…

I hope your being sarcastic when you say he pitched a complete game. The game only went 4 and 1/2 innings before it was rained out and in that 4 innings of work Feierabend gave up four runs and the Jays lost 4-1. Hardly a stellar pitching debute.

My good god Jays have now hit rock bottom under the administration of Shapiro and Atkins and now they are starting to dig.
Feierabend really, whats the matter guys couldn’t you convince Neikro to come out of retirement.
Has anyone noticed a different tone in the broadcasting of Buck and Pat. They are not as rah-rah. Do the Jays have some players out there who will be good if not great sure they do. But that entire roster has a salary of 48 million per year. And that doesn’t include the moneys going to Tulo, Martin, and a few others who management dumped.
In addition as much as I liked Travis we have had him since 2015 and he has played in less then half the games during that time, Detroit dumped him for the injury reason, and we dumped Tulo for the same reason so why are they hanging onto him. The same is true of Buchholtz and the ongoing injury problem, every other team in MLB knows this.
Jays have taken on the Canadian Pickers style of doing things, they are rooting through everyone else’s cast-offs hoping to find a gem. The only gem they have playing currently from the cast-off pile is Freddy Galvis and he’s only here for this season at the most.
But I’m betting Stroman, Sanchez, Smoak and likely Galvis will be gone by the trade deadline..

He signed autographs for me today. He said he would love to go back to South Korea if he hadn’t been with the Jays and made the majors
