Giants Place Buster Posey, Drew Pomeranz On Injured List

By Jeff Todd | May 9, 2019 at 1:09pm CDT

1:07pm: It does not seem that Posey is dealing with a particularly worrying concussion, though obviously any injury of the sort is inherently concerning. That’s the message the veteran backstop conveyed to reporters including Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area.

“When you’re dealing with the brain, you’ve got to be cautious,” says Posey. “I definitely value who I am and will be as a husband and father, first and foremost. At the same time, I enjoy doing my job and plan on doing my job.”

11:19am: The Giants made a pair of injured list placements today. Catcher Buster Posey is going to the 7-day concussion IL, while lefty Drew Pomeranz was placed on the 10-day IL with a left lat strain.

Heading onto the active roster to take the open spots are backstop Aramis Garcia and righty Tyler Beede. Presumably, Stephen Vogt will handle the bulk of the duties behind the dish while Posey is down, though Garcia is in the lineup tonight to face a lefty starter. Beede will work from the bullpen upon his arrival but could also step into the rotation if Pomeranz ends up being sidelined for more than a single start.

Details on Posey’s situation aren’t yet clear, but it’s somewhat troubling news for a veteran backstop who has had at least some prior concussion troubles. As Kerry Crowley of the Mercury News notes, Posey was struck by several foul tips in the mask recently, which may be to blame.

Pomeranz’s numbers reek pitching half his games at SF, then he has big problems. Seemed to have lots of problems last year anyway throwing his curve anywhere close to the plate, which is the only pitch he has to get guys out. Much like Rich Hill and brandon Workman. The 1 pitch that HAS to work in order to succeed and those 3 will throw it 40%+ of the time. no get close? Big time trouble follows.

Hopefully Beede has a better outing next start, I’m hoping he is in the rotation full time next season.

Dude has outstanding stuff. Glad he went back to who he was in college with the power fastball. One start at Great American Smallpark shouldn’t keep him from the rotation in the future, IMO.

That is sadly part of being a catcher and I hope they factor that in when the hall of fame votes on him because he deserves it

even i as a devout giants hater, and someone who can admit to having laughed when posey was struck in the head a few seasons back, would be interested to hear any legit case you can make as to why posey wouldn’t be a first ballot HOFer…

He just doesn’t have the overall stats. He’s past his prime and is definitely slowing down. He won’t even get to 1500 hits until next season, has seen his power slow down over the last four years, and will only get worse as he ages. His defense is exceptional, but he only has one Gold Glove thanks to Molina. He’s a great player, but to say he’ll be first-ballot is pushing it to me.

He’s got a great highlight reel – 6 all-star games, a Gold Glove, 4 silver sluggers, a Rookie of the Year, a batting title as a catcher, 3-time champion, and more. He might get in over time with that. However, worst that could happen is he will have to settle for being a Giants Hall of Famer, beloved Bay Area celebrity, and see his number retired when he hangs it up. Personally, in my eyes he is more important than any of these numbers. I believe he is the guy that got the Giants those trophies.

Anyone who would laugh at anyone getting hit in the head maybe needs to have their head examined? Having said that I agree that Posey is going to need to pad his stats at least three more productive years to have a chance. Add to his WAR stats for sure!

.306 career avg, .840 ops(second all time for previously inducted HoF catchers) RoY, Mvp, Hank Aaron award, Gold Glove, 4 silver sluggers, 6 time allstar, 3 World Series rings. I think he’ll be okay

If we are following the black ink / gray ink data… does Mauer make it?
          CC?
Both are in the same boat as Posey. I think they all make it. The Hall has become the Hall of Great not the Hall of Fame.

If he has a sudden and sustained resurgence he will make it but as it stands, with his injuries and decline, he may not make 2000 hits or 200 HR. He had 5-6 very good years…..maybe even HOF worthy but he will need more than that to get in easily.
I hope he does have a resurgence but at 32 and the years of wear and tear behind the plate it’s not likely.

Wrong. .304 average, and that’s dropping every game he plays because he’s not anywhere close to that anymore. Posey is just like Bumgarner, Giants fans are so in love they can’t see the forest through the trees.

Good players, not historically great players.

Almost surly the reason Cora opted to pitch Evoldi for 6 innings in extras in the World Series instead of going with the last guy left in the pen (Pom). He lived and died on that curve and its not really there anymore.

Posey and Mauer have very similar careers. They will both get in. Posey will get in in an earlier round..
Both have 1 mvp – 6 all stars 4 MVP finishes in the top 11.
    Posey .304 .373 .464
    Mauer .306.388 .439

    Posey has had better teams

Mauer stopped catching when he was around 27 I think. Posey is still catching at 32. So they have had very different careers, IMO.

Mayer caught until he was 30. If you are going to make a counterpoint, at least be accurate. Posey has been playing a little first for a few years, just like Mauer did at first.
Give me a better catching comparison

Posey is a Hall of Famer. The best player at his position for about 6 years, give or take, could hit and could field his position. First ballot? Probably not with the currently politicking from the writers.

Would suggest that Thurman Munson gets in if Posey is in.

Posey doesn’t belong in the hall of fame. Good catcher, maybe? Can hit when no one is on base, yes!. Frame pitches, sure. Clog up bases and hit into a ton of double plays, definitely!
