Mariners Select Ryan Garton, Designate Zac Rosscup

By Jeff Todd | May 17, 2019 at 5:05pm CDT

The Mariners announced a group of moves that will change up their bullpen mix. Righty Ryan Garton’s contract was selected; he’ll be joined by fellow righty Matt Festa, who was recalled.

To make 40-man space for Garton, the M’s have designated southpaw Zac Rosscup for assignment. Active roster space for Festa comes at the expense of Erik Swanson, who was optioned out.

The 29-year-old Garton earned his way back to the bigs for the first time since 2017 after showing well in a swingman capacity at Triple-A. In 26 innings over a dozen appearances, including one start (just the second of his professional career), Garton posted a 3.46 ERA with 9.7 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.

Rosscup, 30, had an outwardly appealing 3.21 ERA but had allowed 14 walks to go with twenty strikeouts in 14 innings. He was posting yawning platoon splits, dominating those left-handed hitters he didn’t walk (.087/.323/.087) while being tuned up by righties (.344/.447/.500).

I feel like the Nick Young (?) gif would be in order here. Rosscup has not been that bad this year! Why not just cut bait with Swarzak or Markel or Wright- all worse

Not being bad doesn’t matter nowadays

Rosscup has almost a 2.0 WHIP and was bad overall. I was pleasantly surprised he was DFA’d

Rosscup has a nice ERA and a decent K/9 for a middle reliever. The rest of his peripheral stats are horrible and he is mainly a garbage time pitcher. Surprisingly his ERA isn’t a product of Safeco as it is over 4 at home.

He’s 25 and only has 77 innings in triple-a. I swear to god if one more person says he’s terrible, I’m going to lose it.

I like Swanson, he’ll be a nice piece in the future. People already forgetting he had two quality starts where he gave had 0 and 1 ER respectively; with another 7 inning start with 4 ER.

And it’s not like Leake, Kikuchi, LeBlanc, or Felix have done much better. Even Marco has been in a May tailspinz
