Latest On Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Dellin Betances

By Connor Byrne | June 11, 2019 at 10:12pm CDT

The Yankees have been without injured corner outfielders Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge for almost the whole season, but it appears they’ll be back in the team’s lineup soon. Manager Aaron Boone suggested Tuesday that the sluggers could return during an upcoming homestand that spans from June 17-26, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com (Twitter links). In the meantime, both players will need to tune up in the minor leagues. Stanton started a rehab assignment at the High-A level Tuesday, while Judge is likely to embark on a rehab stint with either Triple-A Scranton or another affiliate this weekend.

New York’s one of nine teams that have cracked at least 100 home runs this year, but it hasn’t gotten any from the prodigious Stanton. The 29-year-old totaled only eight plate appearances before going to the injured list with a biceps strain April 1. While that problem is in the past, Stanton has since dealt with left shoulder and calf issues – the latter of which forced him back to the IL on May 22 shortly after he began a rehab assignment.

Judge, meanwhile, headed to the IL on April 21 with a significant left oblique strain. He opened his age-27 season with a flourish before that, slashing .288/.404/.521 (145 wRC+) with five homers in 89 trips to the plate.

Just as the Yankees’ offense has had to get by without Stanton and Judge, among others, their bullpen has been forced to survive without one of its best pieces. Right-hander Dellin Betances hasn’t pitched this season after being diagnosed with a bone spur in his shoulder in early April. That injury has healed, but the four-time All-Star is now battling a right lat strain. Although Boone announced it’s a low-grade strain, the Yankees will shut Betances down “for a few weeks,” Hoch writes.

“He’s still going to play a big role for us this year, just a little later than we thought,” Boone said of Betances.

Tied for first without their top 5 players by WAR for most of the year (Judge, Stanton, Severino, Didi, Hicks). Yanks gonna win it all this year easy. And probably embarrass the twins again in the playoffs along the way lol

Why even respond to the jerk? Let him play his little reindeer troll games without any recognition. Giving any kind of response only makes him think someone gives a S##t about his troll bait.

even if they falter, – which would be less likely when they get their best players back – theyll still have a cake-walk to at least a wild card spot.

Expect them to trade some infield and outfield depth to get pitching. That’s why they’re giving the kids a chance to play. So many just watch games and never have a clue about the FO chess games being played. They have several more position players stacked in the minors just waiting to show what they got. Urshela was one of many flying under the wire. What better trade do they have now that Didi is back? They’ll use him and prospects to get pitching depth. Pretty simple.

“That’s why they’re giving the kids a chance to play” They’re playing because they had to. “They have several more position players stacked in the minors ready to play” No they don’t. Now stop trolling young man and run off to bed.

These guys aren’t the issue- it’s pitching and to be clear the starting pitching. Judge and Stanton can mash but as Chuck says above pitching wins in October. Stanton and Judge basically get you there.

Per Joel Sherman “”Yankee starters……. have a 4.02 rotation ERA and ranking in the bottom third in innings pitched by starters. Only the non-contending Orioles, Blue Jays and Angels have a lower percentage of quality starts in the AL than the Yankees’ 31.8 (21 in 66 games). The cascading effect has overtaxed the pen.”

where is the critique of Cash?

The low innings per start is in large part due to their very good bullpen which makes it easy to pull the starters early. The same is true for QS because the Yankees are more likely to pull the starter for someone like Ottavino in the 5th or 6th inning than a team like Boston for example is to pull a starter for whoever they have in the bullpen. I’m not sure I agree that the bullpen is in fact overtaxed but if they are, I’m sure it has more to do with the fact that they are winning all the time and need to use their top 3-4 relievers to get those wins than the starters nor pitching deep into games

That makes no sense. Your suggesting that the Yankees burn out their pen cause it’s great. The truth is the pen is loaded because the starters stink. Cash had failed with the rotation but is no idiot. So he spends more on the pen than many teams do on their entire roster.

However, overtaxing the pen is not the plan

Not to mention they are toward the bottom of the league in defense. I said it a week ago they’re coming down to earth. Paxton-Happ-CC what a joke, and don’t get me started on Gardner.

It’s ridiculous than cash gets a free pass from the media! Sherman’s article analyses it correctly but doesn’t assign responsibility. Every other GM in this town gets fairly ripped for this stuff. Starting pitching is akin to quarterbacks. Ask any jet or giant fan how the GM have been crucified for their management of those positions. (Although the giants did just gift the jets respite in the form of darnold)

Just once I’d like to see a beat writer, radio host, or tv analyst rip cash for the pitching mess

Don’t drink the kool aid. Until Hal is gone this billion dollar company will go cheap on us diehard fans and not spend on quality starting pitching. What ace do we have? None! Paxton is just another Seattle dream, don’t get me started on worthless tanka and cc. They pray for the long ball to get the wins. Hal is nothing short of a JOKE and killing the chance of a winning it all. As long as the sheep continue to go see them and money comes I do we really think they will get a ace we’ve needed for years? Think again. George is turning over in the grave. Hal must GO!

just not sure its the money. The team spends- .35 mil alone on Happ, CC and Gardy. Its how he spends it that is the issue. They have one of the highest payrolls Cash is just not as smart as people give him credit for!

Ask Louie what he thinks of 10 mil for gardy this year!
