Braves Reportedly Considering Outfield Acquisition

By Jeff Todd | July 29, 2019 at 7:09pm CDT

The Braves are contacting rivals in search of outfield help, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). The Atlanta organization is evidently looking to address the newfound uncertainty surrounding the status of right fielder Nick Markakis.

It didn’t seem as if the Braves would be involved in this segment of the market, but a fractured wrist now threatens to put Markakis out of action until late in the season. Even if they’d prefer to wait and see how he heals up, the club is no doubt concerned with bypassing an opportunity to fill the gap at the deadline.

There is certainly an internal route to filling the job, depending upon what one thinks of Adam Duvall. He had spent the entire season on optional assignment until recently, earning a $2,875,000 salary to serve as depth and for his potential future value. Obviously the club believes in his talent to some degree to have handled him in this manner, though it also hadn’t seen fit to call him up until forced by the Markakis injury.

Duvall makes for a natural platoon partner with Ender Inciarte, who was seemingly displaced by Austin Riley as a regular but now seems to be a key figure. (This is a key reason I argued the team ought not rush into trading him.) Matt Joyce also remains an option from the left side, giving the club some options to work with. But with Riley struggling at the plate and Johan Camargo needed to fill in at short in place of the injured Dansby Swanson, we’re seeing the first stresses on what has been a sturdy position-player mix all year long in Atlanta.

Under the circumstances, it’s sensible to consider outside alternatives — particularly if someone can be had for an appealing enough price. The Braves are surely still focused on adding pitching, but there’s an argument to be made that they ought now put nearly as much emphasis on installing a bat. While the need arose due to an unfortunate injury, it does create an opportunity to add a slugger to an already potent lineup.

Call me crazy but I’d rather keep Jon Jay through this season. Considering he won’t bring back anything significant and the fact that he’s been so much fun to watch this year, I’d rather just keep him.

I can’t believe I’m saying that. I hated that signing over the winter.

…and Aaron Bummer isn’t likely to be traded unless it’s for a very heavy overpay in which the Sox would be stupid to not take it. Small sample size would probably limit his value to other teams anyway.

Come get Santana from Seattle. His D has greatly improved moving from left to right. Something about the glove being to the foul line. It sound weird not sure why it makes a difference but he has improved. He had a catch a couple weeks ago that would have been in the top ten if they didn’t do them before the game was over. Has a good bat and all the experts are saying Ks don’t matter ok some of them are saying it. I bet you get him for a mid level prospect. Funny I use Swype and level came out nickel. Would you take him for a nickel? Lol You Braves have enough prospects send one our way. 3rd base catcher or starting pitcher will work. They have to be ready in a year or two at the most too. You could send all three of those if you wanted. No need to be greedy.

Haha! I like it. Gohara is the only player currently under contract in the league that could rival CC and Ruth for most pinstripes ever worn on a jersey. Too bad the Yanks never signed Ortiz, No Vaugh or Big Sexy to get in the raffel too. And no… Richie Season is not the Big Sexy I’m talking about. I think I saw a video of a minor league 300 lb guy that actually hit an in the park home run. He fell down in the process and still made it I believe. He’s about the only other guy that could stand a chance at the pinstripes record.

If they’re not going to start Duvall every game he needs to be traded. He obviously has nothing left to prove in the minors and has proved he’s not an effective bat off the bench or playing sporadically. It’s too bad there wasn’t more time to see if he can rake up here before the deadline ends, just bad timing with Kakes injury.
I can definitely see him going back to the reds in a package for Puig and Iglesias.

Duvall has never played a full season well. His only ASG appearance was based on the 1st half of a season and he faded badly that year. Followed Duvall when he was in the Giants system. Very underrated defender. Good team guy. But not capable of playing full time.

If the Reds can keep Puig at 15 per for two or three years then they should. His QO (which the Braves would net) will probably be 18 mill so that figure is likely too low

That’s an interesting move to think about. I have no idea what the Sox could get for Leury Garcia. He’s not making much ($1.550 million) and he’s still eligible for one more go-round of arbitration; plus, he’s incredibly versatile and a solid defender unlike a lot of other utility guys around the league.

I’m hoping we jusr re-sign him for another 3-4 years, honestly. He’d be perfect on a contender though.

If this post bares fruit I am warming up to the idea of Nicky C. I think the Braves should be putting much more effort into acquiring pitching because I that is our biggest problem and 2 out of Inciarte, Duvall, Camargo (in a week or 2 once Swanson is healthy), Culbertson, Joyce and Riley should be able to pan out especially considering Kakis is projected to be back with at least a couple of weeks left in the regular season. That being said, if they are going to acquire a bat I would prefer it would be a rental with low level prospects in return that could really help our line up. I don’t like his defensive flaws but if it becomes atrocious one of the other players I mentioned should be able to take his place. I don’t think we need an outfielder but Nicky C is likely a low risk high reward player that won’t hurt our franchise in the future.

Castellanos makes a lot of sense for the Braves the more I think about it. He’s not someone you’d expect to see moved to an NL team but I could see the Braves seeing value in his bat until Markakis comes back.

I am a Tiger fan. Nick C is not a great outfielder but Comerica which is big makes him look worse than he is. He is a good hitter and in smaller park, especially to right, he will hit lot of HRs. He also is pretty good in the clutch. Now go get him and give us Drew Waters.

And if he swung like Donaldson he would hit to RF on balls on the outer half. He looks like he is trying to pull everything. Or perhaps it just appears that way because much of the time he is swinging through pitches. He really needs to just cut down on this swing and hit the other way. When pitchers realize he isn’t an easy out they will stop throwing him so many sliders and curveballs. As you said hit the pitching machine until he gets it. Talk to Chipper Jones, Freddie Freeman about not taking such a big hack. Talk to Ronald Acuna Jr and Josh Donaldson about hitting the other way with authority. He can get out of this funk.

…and he’s proven to be productive on bad teams for three years now. Honestly, I’m not sure why so many Sox fans are trying to pimp him in trade offers. I think we’d rather just re-sign him considering we don’t have many utility guys like him in the system.

I would give either Gohara or Allard. They both used to be top prospects but one is obese and just had minor shoulder surgery while the other has underperformed thus far. Would you take that? I probably would in Detroit’s shoes cause Nick C won’t help them win after this year and those guys very well could. I’m okay with the Braves doing it because it is a go for it move and with how loaded our system is they likely won’t end up helping our roster much in the future regardless.

I swear to God… I am so sick of reading these “Puig to Braves” proposals dozens of times every single day. It always seems to either be Reds/Non-Braves fans making them. Anthopolous worked with the Dodgers and knows Puig and his attitude all to well. He doesn’t want him. He would be terrible for the core of players we have. I really just wish people would take the time to realize that everyone else has already made this proposal and it gets shot down every time. It was stupid 3 days ago. It was stupid 3 hours ago. It was stupid 30 minutes ago and it’s even more stupid now. At the very least I wish people would stop repeatedly proposing it as if it is some novel idea and they just thought of it. Maybe they did just think of it but they don’t even take the effort to realize hundreds of other people on this site thought of it and proposed it in the past few days. The only people that really want this trade are Reds fans who want any return on their teams I’ll advised investment.

Trading your best player for a “good” return is a great way to suck forever. Needs to be a great return.

The more I see of the offers, the more I think the Pirates should just keep everyone (except for the rentals obviously) and get back to what they know best….dumpster diving for MLB pitching reclamation projects.

They can work with “has beens” but have shown no luck with “never beens”. They need more “has beens”.

Marte is their best player. He is their best defender. Their best baserunner. Their #3 hitter. And if by maxed out, you mean he’s having his best season ever, that is true.

Trading him and replacing him with a Juan Lagares type does not make them a better team. They would have to get an amazing package of players that fill all of their other holes to make that move worthwhile.

Rather keep him and try to find more Volquez types and cheap out there.

PS- Just watched Moran’s grand slam. It’s amazing how they can make these blowouts that they have no chance to win look respectable. If the Pirates had even bad pitching, they’d still be in the race. But it’s been awful.

Go big or go home. Atlanta only needs an Ace. But if they go cheap, they’ll never get where they want to go. Their window of contention is wide open. Greinke fits, not just because he’s a legit Ace, but also because he is under control for 2 more years at a modest $35M per, with $11M per year deferred until 2025-2026

You’re still buying Greinke’s age 37 and 38 seasons at a premium rate. You aren’t fetching blue chip prospects for that. ATL has some solid second tier guys like Muller, Wilson or Wentz though. That’s more realistic. A pair of those 2 is about all I could see Greinke fetching. I’d say less than that if you put a gun to my head though.

It is a move that wont be costly either, Frazier burned a couple bridges before he went back to the minors where he has nothing to prove.

Let’s be real here Nick MarkAkis has graded out as a terrible RF this year. He’s doing nothing but getting older and slower. Frazier has a plus arm and decent speed. He can at least be a wash with Markakis defensively w the upside to actually be decent out there in a corner. He has the tools to get there.

Whether or not you want to give that a shot in a postseason race is another story. But if you’re acquiring a Nick Castellanos or Trey Mancini to play a corner slot I have to imagine solely based on raw tools that you could get Clint Frazier to be better a defensive outfielder than that.

Like a trade for Frazier; however, Folty and newcomb is over 100% overpay. With just Folty, Yankees would need to add a minor leager to Frazier to be equal. Think about a deal with SanDiego for Right Fielder, Closer and Starter for Pache plus. Padres love prospects. How about Kirby Yates, Andres Munoz and Hunter Renfro or Franmil Reyes for Christian Pache and Kolby Allard. The Padres may add Paddack if the Braves throw in Ian Anderson.

Either trade for Merrifield and Duffy, Marte and Vazquez, or maybe Kyle Tucker. Wonder how much the Astros have been looking at what the Braves have.

I’m saying that no trade that uses non-essential players really works.

Hard to imagine the Astros wanting to swap Pache or Waters for Tucker. Those kind of deals never happen.

So what else do the Braves have that’s worth a top 10 prospect?

Braves fans, at least the ones on this thread, seem to be as cheap as their FO. Unwilling to really go for quality, but more than content to settle for mediocre. And offering only their unwanted, underperformers to get pie in the sky talent from other organizations. And then instantly reject anything resembling a decent player at a reasonable return.

This just seems like a different type of year. Maybe everyone learned from the Pittsburgh debacle last year to not sell the farm for an average pitcher.
Teams that are selling aren’t going to get a Gold Mine…maybe Toronto was smart and got the best they are going to get for Stroman. And those who hold out for teams to give them the next Cy Young in exchange for a rental are going to be sorely disappointed as their below average team stays below average while they suck up a crappy contract from a salary hog for the next 3 years.
Better take what you can get and be glad You’ve gained some flexibility.

Jarrod Dyson would be a decent fit for the Braves. He’s got great speed, an excellent defender anywhere in the outfield, and when Markakis comes back he can be used as a pinch-runner off the bench.

Mancini is a pretty good hitter, but he’s pretty bad defensively. Put him in SunTrust and he’d be worse. Meanwhile Wright is the #38 prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com.

Adam Jones would come cheap and Braves only need him for a few weeks. David Paralta is available. Perhaps one of these and Robbie Ray for Wentz and Allard

This was my thought as well. Adam Jones for basically nothing. Not a great fielder anymore but can get the job done well, and if Nick comes back, would be a solid 4th OF option and clubhouse veteran.

Any realistic packages for grienke would depend on how much money Arizona is willing to eat. If they would 2/3 of the money I could see them getting Wright, Wilson, and a couple of A ball flyers

Wish list as a Braves fan:
    Greinke and Peralta
    Vazquez and Marte
    Iglesias and Scooter Gennet

Greinke is the true ace they need
Peralta and Marte in the outfield with Acuna!
Vazquez & Iglesias strengthen the pen, also with one taking over the closer role, takes pressure off Luke, which hopefully will help him improve. ( Webb should be back soon as well)
Gennett plays second and won’t cost much prospect wise, moves to the bench when Swanson returns.
Riley goes to AAA to regain confidence and timing.
Inciarte thrown into one of the deals
    Same with Gausman

Yankees have said they are willing to trade Clint Frazier for a starting pitcher. Why haven’t the Braves made this trade already? Gausman or Wilson or Toussaint would all work for me. Foltynewicz also but Folty would require a minor leaguer like Estrada, Gomez or King.

They are close to switching to Yasiel Puig, for me it would be a good change an ex-Dodger and I think that snitker can help Puig a lot. Now that they have a puig is to look for an SP or 2 SP … and finish sending Teheran via change to some team. It is sad to see Teheran with the years he has been on the team and has not become an AS of the team. It’s time to change it.
