Braves To Acquire John Ryan Murphy

By Steve Adams | July 31, 2019 at 2:33pm CDT

The Braves are set to acquire catcher John Ryan Murphy from the Diamondbacks in exchange for cash considerations, Robert Murray of The Athletic tweets.

It’s a pure depth move to safeguard against injuries to Brian McCann and Tyler Flowers down the stretch — and possibly to roster a third catcher in September. Murphy, 28, is regarded as a premium defensive catcher but has had scant success at the plate in the Majors. He was outrighted off Arizona’s 40-man roster earlier this season after hitting .177/.250/.419 in 69 plate appearances and is a career .219/.265/.357 hitter in 673 MLB trips to the plate.

John Ryan Murphy is the name of either a serial killer or the third lead actor in some CBS procedural drama.

This comment made me burst out laughter…in the middle of work…which is in a call center…surrounded by 100+ people…and i don’t even feel bad about it.

Never forget that Brian Cashman stoke Aaron Hicks from the Twins for John Ryan Murphy. A good Cashman move on a day where it looks like he will do nothing.

I’d be ok just letting Alex Jackson be our 3rd catcher. Idk… some experience does help I suppose. Pretty standard move this time of year

Jackson is probably part of the Greene deal. It would make sense as they had to clear a 40-man spot and he was the most likely to go with Langeliers and Contreras in the fold.

      Just a guess.

I wonder what a player would feel after getting traded and hearing that they got traded for “cash considerations”. Probably feels pretty crappy.

As Dbacks fans can tell you, it probably feels worse when you realize “cash considerations” was an overpay.

This one pretty much echos all the jokes the Braves garner every deadline.

“Braves are interested in an impact bat.”

    Braves get Murphy.

The market for defensive catchers is booming rn.

    First Maldonado to Astros.
    Now Murphy to Atlanta

Trade C-Flowers for a real Catcher,we the Braves need to get a Major League catcher ready McCann is getting older.Flowers have to many pass balls get by him.During the game against Washington Flowers had a pass ball and our no.1 pitcher was pitching DALLAS and a good pitch got pass C-FLOWERS that change his whole game plan because he was not able to throw his slider down and low in the dirt because we got a catcher who cannot block the low balls,so DALLAS had to pich up and the hitters adjust to it .Man we need a good young catcher who can move and block ball in the dirt while our pitchers will not hesitate to throw low stikes. The catcher we just trade for C-TAYLOR can relief C-FLOWERS in the late inning for defensive
reasons.I predicted right the Braves trade for a middle the players hopefully they will come thru
Braves sign a free agent CATCHER next year.McCann one maybe 2 years left, keep McCann around to train new catcher, put NICK as a role player and makeCARMUGO your right outfield.I would train NICK M.to play 1B to relieve FREEMAN for rest and NICK M. get some at bats.NEXY YEAR OUTFIELD..LF-ACUNTO. CF-ELMER. RF-DUVALL or CARMEGO alternate both then mix it up between them and add in OF-RILEY,or bring up your young players,PACHO,and others.I would make RF-DUVALL my regular righ fielder.Duvall was a all-star player with the REDS and hit at least 30 home runs.Congrats GENERAL MANAGER for adding to our team without giving up our future.
