Phillies Acquire Corey Dickerson

By Steve Adams | July 31, 2019 at 2:43pm CDT

2:43pm: The trade is now official.  The Phillies designated outfielder Dylan Cozens for assignment to make room for Dickerson.

2:14pm: MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki tweets that the Phillies will send international bonus allotments and a player to be named later to Pittsburgh.

2:08pm: The Pirates will not receive a player in return for Dickerson, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports (on Twitter). It’s possible that Pittsburgh is picking up some international funds, then, or that Pirates ownership was simply happy to shed the remainder of his salary.

1:51pm: The Phillies have acquired outfielder Corey Dickerson from the Pirates, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports (via Twitter). He’ll add a quality bat to the Phillies’ outfield mix for the remainder of the season before becoming a free agent this winter.

Dickerson, 30, missed nearly two months with a shoulder strain earlier this season but has hit well since coming off the injured list. In 141 plate appearances, he’s posted a .317/.376/.556 batting line — capped by a two-homer, five-RBI performance last night in what proved to be his final start for the Pirates. A 2017 All-Star, Dickerson long carried the reputation as a defensive liability, but he surprised with 16 Defensive Runs Saved last season and took home a Gold Glove for his efforts. He’s earning $8.5MM this year and is still owed about $2.79MM of that sum over the final two months of the year.

The Phillies didn’t expect to need this level of outfield help in 2019 after signing both Bryce Harper and Andrew McCutchen in the offseason, but they’ve lost McCutchen to a torn ACL while center fielder Odubel Herrera has been suspended for the remainder of the season under the league’s domestic violence policy. Philadelphia tried to proactively address its needs with a June acquisition of Jay Bruce, but Bruce has been bitten by the injury bug as well and is currently out for weeks with an oblique injury.

Philadelphia is currently tied with the Cubs for the second NL Wild Card spot and is a somewhat distant but still-surmountable six games behind the Braves in the NL East. The Nationals sit just a half game in front of the Phillies in both those races, so Dickerson’s addition will prove impactful in what should be a tight race down the stretch.

Won’t get anything for him based on him being acquired as a depth OF.

Unfortunately he’s an expiring contract and his injuries cost the pirates big time in getting a return on one of few players of any value.

Things are gonna be ugly in Pirates land for a looong time.

Should really do what they can to get something for Felipe now to kick off the rebuild.

Takes Pirates at least 5x longer to rebuild than serious clubs.

1 thing I know as well as I know my name is that Alec Bohm will not be promoted to the Phils by the end of the year. Saw him play 2 days ago for AA Reading and he’s doing ok but nothing screams a promotion to AAA at this point.

The Phils will give Haseley as many ab’s as he can handle. When Dickerson-Haseley-Harper is the OF, look for Kingery at 3B.

Yeah Bohm has already jumped 3 levels this year so I highly doubt he jumps 2 more. He probably needs to spend a few months at AAA before moving up to the majors. I see him more as a mid-season call up next year, probably by September at the latest.

There’s definitely a big offensive upgrade if Kingery moves to 3B and Dickerson takes an OF spot since Dickerson hits much better than Franco.

But there is going to be a BIG defensive downgrade at 3B because Franco has been playing a very good 3B and Kingery has never been good at third.

This year says different. He’s made some really spectacular plays and all the analytics say he’s played a good 3B, Fangraphs UZR/150 has him as the 5th best defensive 3B having saved 2.9 runs so far this year and on pace for 5.8

Watching every game I think he’s played much better defensively this year than any other previous season. I think with Kingery there is a ‘repetition’ factor. If he stays at one position he improves defensively. He got better at SS last season as the year went on. He’s gotten better (still not that great) in the OF as the season has gone on.

Problem is 3B is also about your throwing arm and he definitely doesn’t have the arm Franco does.

If Neal trades Vasquez for anything else than what hes worth then its going to be a very long summer for the Bucs because the city is sick of the way they do business.

Worst owner in quite possibly sports history. They need an MLB version of the Ted Stepian Rule called the Bob Nutting Rule that you can’t just give away your better players to avoid paying their contracts.

Not a bad get for a player that has been playing hurt most of the year (has had a groin issue lately) and he would be gone after the season for nothing at all. Maybe they can sign him back after the season if he is not getting offered huge money.

I like Dickerson, but if they resigned him, where does he play? Marte is going to be in CF, and they have to give Reynolds one of the corner spots. Basically it comes down to Dickerson vs Polanco for regular time—they wouldn’t platoon, one would have to go. Would have to see what you could get for Polanco and get Dickerson to resign at a reasonable rate. Just too many ifs in that scenario

    1) An intl. bonus allotment is not cash, it will actually result in Nutting spending more than he would have before this trade.

    2) Corey was only likely to bring back a #15-30 org. prospect. You have a better chance of getting a good player by signing international free agents.

    3) We have no clue who the PTBNL is.

    4) Don’t let those facts get in the way. Carry on.
