Brewers To Acquire Drew Pomeranz, Ray Black

By Steve Adams | July 31, 2019 at 1:27pm CDT

1:27pm: ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweets that hard-throwing righty Ray Black will also go to Milwaukee.

1:25pm: Lefty Drew Pomeranz is one player headed to the Brewers in the swap, tweets Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. If the Brewers are parting with a prospect of Dubon’s caliber, there’ll surely be other names in play.

1:23pm: The Brewers ad Giants are in agreement on a “significant” trade, reports Robert Murray of The Athletic (via Twitter). The big league players involved in the swap remain unknown, but well-regarded second base prospect Mauricio Dubon is headed from Milwaukee to San Francisco as part of the exchange. Madison Bumgarner is *not* going to Milwaukee, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

In Dubon, the Giants will acquire a Major League-ready 25-year-old who can step directly onto the roster. Dubon’s 2018 season was cut short by a torn ACL, but he’s returned to bat .297/.333/.475 with 16 home runs, 22 doubles, a triple and nine steals in the hitter-friendly Triple-A Pacific Coast League. He’ll face a much more daunting offensive environment in the big leagues when he plays his home games at the cavernous Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Scouting reports on Dubon peg him as a hit-over-power prospect, and the move to Oracle Park doesn’t figure to do his power numbers any favor. But he’s never batted lower than .274 in a full minor league season, and he’s maintained strikeout rates south of 15 percent on a year-over-year basis. Dubon doesn’t walk much, but his knack for putting the ball in play should help his on-base skills in the big leagues. He’s considered capable of playing an average or better second base even after last year’s knee injury.

The veteran Pomeranz is the more well-known of the two arms being acquired by the Brewers, but he seems like a secondary piece in this swap. Pomeranz had an awful year in the Giants’ rotation but has garnered some attention following a (very) recent shift to the bullpen. In four relief outings, he’s tossed 5 1/3 shutout frames with just one hit and one walk allowed against eight strikeouts. The lefty has ample experience in the rotation and could return to that role if the Brewers feel he’s a mechanical adjustment or pitch-selection alteration away from returning to hi 2017 form, but his recent success in a return to the bullpen is more intriguing.

Black is already 29 years old but is the more appealing piece for Milwaukee. Durability has been an issue for the right-hander, but if he’s healthy he’ll be among the hardest-throwing pitchers in Major League Baseball. Black has averaged 99.1 mph on his heater in a tiny sample this season and regularly hits triple digits with a fastball that draws 80 grades on some scouting reports. Black has averaged nearly 17 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in his minor league career and might not even finish the season with a full year of MLB service, meaning he can be controlled through 2025.

Ok, they say he can start right now, but at the same time the Brewers continued to roll out guys like Tyler Saladino, Hernan Perez, and an underachieving Orlando Arcia instead of giving him a chance, so it shows that maybe they weren’t as bullish on his outlook as some of these scouts.

        • Gobbysteiner

Well the brewers just traded their number 3 prospect for a guy who was nearly DFA’d and a guy who has never had any sort of success at the big league level and is already 30 so maybe they should listen to the scouts more

Smart move by Zaidi. Young, athletic middle infielder who appears to have all the tools. Nice upgrade without giving up too much if it’s just Black and Pomeranz. They had to address 2b. Dubon is young and will have growing pains but a nice move towards the future. Maybe Panik gets released? Assuming Dubon will join the 25 man roster

Dubon may sit in minors till September call ups because Giants also scooped up Scooter Gennett from the Reds. This doesn’t look good for Joe Panik, who I’ve always liked but who has looked over-matched the last two years.

Turang is a MUCH better option at short. He’ll probably take another year at least to develop, but he’s the Crew’s SS of the future. Dubon projects as an average major league SS, so it’s better to trade him if the Crew won’t use him. Still disappointed by the return though.

Nah. At least there’s a little bit of reason behind this one. They need bullpen help and especially lefty help. The Schoop trade was for a scraping player at a position they didn’t need, and they gave up 2 prospects and an MLB player with pretty equal numbers to get him. Don’t like either trade, but I still think the Schoop one was worse than this….

      Reply
      • AaronAngst

Scraping player? At the time of last year’s deadline, Schoop was a raking player and I think Stearns was hoping that would continue after the deal… and into this season. That trade didn’t pan out. At all. The need was, of course, also questionable…, but what he dealt to Baltimore seemed like a fair deal at the time for a guy who appeared to be getting back to what he displayed in 2017. All star form.

All this trade really tells me is that they don’t think much of Dubon. That being the case, you would still think other teams would potentially value him more than this trade would indicate. Seems like the Brewers are not really adding salary in the moves they’re making.

        • mikeyst13

He had had a hot 2 1/2 weeks before that trade, but was not having a good season as a whole and those 2 1/2 were more about running into some HRs and not acutally playing well rounded ball. And Villar who they gave back was also a former All-Star. That trade made zero sense to me. Shaw was playing at 2B, Villar was here, Ortiz and Carmona were both pretty well liked prospects in the system, just bad trade all around.

I agree that they obviously don’t think much of Dubon though. That should have been obvious when they refused to give him a chance earlier in the year.

Good contact, adequate defender at SS but probably better suited for 2B long-term. HR rates are a little inflated in the PCL, as are all the offensive numbers to a point.
Going to be more of a line drive gap to gap hitter. Had decent speed, but hasn’t shown it as much after the ACL last season… Saw him play a lot at Colorado Springs, and I like him and didn’t know why they didn’t give him a shot at the big leagues earlier this season while they scuffled at 2B and SS. Think he ends up more as an average to slightly above average every day player though, not the stud some of these people seem to think he is…..

I like it. Right handed. Second base. Can play the infield. Hopefully a higher average guy.

Austin probably gone. With Longo coming back. The offense might uptick. I think Longo is coming back on Monday vs. the Nats…

Now, To get another outfielder. Sans Slater.

Pom was expendable. The couple outings raised his stock. Good. But toi small a sample to say he’s Great. . .

Goodbye Black. Never got it fully together here. . .

-Still in this thing. Gotta keep taking series. . .

The Brewers have picked up a couple not so good pitchers in the last few hours.

Big Splash by the Brewers! Between the 3 arms we acquired this week we get to inherit 15.58 in ERA. David Stearns coming in clutch in the big chair this week. What a joke!

They actually acquired 4 so far. Lyles, Faria, Pomeranz, and Black) They were desperate for pitching and got some possible up-side in Faria and Black, who are controllable til 2024 and 2025 respectively. Pomeranz has been more effective out of the pen the last 2 years and they needed lefty help out there, and Lyles can eat some innings and cost next to nothing. They didn’t have the prospects do get anything super major done. (though the Jays did give up Stroman for cheap.).

Stearns is picking up hacks and wash outs. Milwaukee needed a stud and they got duds. They will be out of the playoff hunt soon. Cheapskate transactions. Worst starting rotation in NL. Nice job Stearns.

A great trade for the Giants, and I think the Brewers will like the guys they got.

I hope Farhan makes more trades in the next 33 minutes!

I love this! Brew fans thought bumgarner was on the way and got pomeranz instead! Its like being rejected by the model for a date and being forced to take out her ugly out of shape cousin instead. Enjoy arbys you two!

Smith maybe. Any Brewer fan with any common sense at all knew it wasn’t going to be MadBum.

Scratching my head today. I can’t believe I’m going to say this but the trades the brewers did today are making the Jordan Lyles trade look great. ouch

Don’t mind the Faria for Aguilar trade at all. Still has some starter potential and if nothing else should have a decent floor in the pen. Both guys seemed to need a change of scenery. I’ll take that one over the Lyles trade all day.

I hate this trade. Dubon should be their starting shortstop and would have been last year if it wasn’t for the injury. All he does is hit and play a respectable short. Now their stuck with Arcia until Turang is ready. Great job at giving him away for crap.

I’m sorry offseason the Brewers should try and get Iglesias as there starting shortstop.

This will go down as the best deal Farhan made all day. Good for the Brewers, excellent for the Giants.

Seems Giants came out ahead on this one but Pomz has been superb out of the pen.
Black has always been someone you hoped on. Good guy, incredible arm, who knows, maybe the beer will help him out.

Why can’t more comments be like this one? Instead we get dray16 making generalizations about entire fanbases from his mom’s basement while he craps into a bedpan that she’s holding under him. smdh

He has pitched five innings. Ray Black I like, but at this point he is what he is and needs a change of scenery.
