Chris Taylor Diagnosed With Fractured Forearm

By Jeff Todd | July 15, 2019 at 10:09pm CDT

10:09pm: Taylor said he suffered a non-displaced fracture just above the wrist, which typically comes with a four- to-six week recovery (Twitter link via Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register).

5:50pm: Dodgers utilityman Chris Taylor has been diagnosed with a fractured forearm, per a club announcement (via Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times, on Twitter). He’ll be replaced on the active roster by Matt Beaty.

It isn’t known at present what kind of an absence the club can anticipate from Taylor, a shape-shifting defender and steady offensive producer. Initial imaging did not uncover the break; whether that’s good, bad, or indifferent isn’t evident.

With the trade deadline landing in two weeks’ time, the Dodgers will have an opportunity to pursue reinforcements. Corey Seager and A.J. Pollock are both back, reducing the pressure. The organization is as laden with depth as ever, with top middle-infield prospect Gavin Lux among the players waiting in the wings in the upper minors.

The Dodgers won’t worry too much about a stretch sans Taylor. With a commanding division lead, the club can focus its deadline efforts on shaping its roster for the postseason. Unless the injury is quite a bit more severe than it seems at first glance, Taylor ought to have time to get back to health and up to full speed before October.

Dodgers absolutely have the pieces to get Merrifield. Don’t think they will though but who knows. Any 3 or 4 of Dustin May, Gavin Lux, Will Smith, DJ Peters, Jeter Downs, Cristian Santana, Keibert Ruiz, Josiah Gray and Edwin Ucenta can headline to get just about anyone.

I just can’t see the Dodgers trading Dustin May. He has the look of a very solid starter. He’ll probably join that rotation in 2020.

Why? Dodgers have quality replacements for Taylor on their roster and in the minors. No reason to deal prospects.

Presumably they ran him in for an MRI when they got to Philly. It may actually be good news that the fracture was too small to show up on an X-ray and it’s on the forearm instead of the wrist joint. Wishful thinking, anyway.

Muncy would be the move since he was playing 2B earlier this year with Seager out. Now they just go Seager/Hernandez at SS, Muncy at 2B, platoon Beaty/Freese and let Turner play 1B/3B.

To be honest, a decent enough month or so from Lux could mean Taylor is off the postseason roster anyway.

I dont know about that 13/12 in a playoff format. Basically Taylor makes it regardless if he’s healthy, because he can play def and his speed.

Plus 3 Rookies seeing significant time on a team with WS aspirations seems like a tough sell. Not that I would mind seeing Lux, but seeing as he’s been only truly played SS, I can’t see him until Sept.

He’s looking good – .313/.375/.521 and positives about his glove work. And that’s after killing AA with a .478/.520/.848 (1.368 OPS!!) slash. He’s nearly ready, if not already.

I think you have his AA and AAA numbers backward

Either way I will not believe a Lux call up is coming until either Seager is hurt or I start seeing him at 2B in the OKC lineup

Touche, I switched them round. Makes his AAA efforts look even better.

I see he’s had 6 starts at 2B in AA this year, I do wonder if they’re going to give him some reps going forward, or just let him continue to settle at short.

Nonetheless, man..this Dodgers farm knows how to produce diamonds.

Dodgers are stacked. They have all the internal reinforcements needed. Sometimes it’s best not to mess with chemistry. The bullpen is a bit suspect. If they can lock that down, they’re in good shape. Only need 4 starters in playoffs so the odd man out can pitch out of the bully too

Maeda is the one to move to the pen in the postseason if Hill comes back. If Hill doesn’t come back the postseason rotation becomes somewhat more complicated. Either way the crying need is for a situational lefty. They don’t have any good internal options for that role so they need to go shopping for one.

And it seems the Giants have a strangehold on the two “big(ish) names’ with Tony Watson and Will Smith. I’m sure Jake Diekman could be had for almost nothing but I don’t recall many playoff teams entrusting much with Diekman. They might have to just go with what they have.

Would the Dodgers trade with the Red Sox? How about C.J. Chatham for Urías. Sox need a lefty in pen big time.

That’s nice that the Sox need a lefty..but that doesn’t mean the Dodgers will let the Sox Front Office bend them over a table.

You’re not getting a young, established Major League arm for Chatham, especially when the Dodgers have better talent than Chatham in their depth already.

Chatham for Urias is laughable. Not only are the Dodgers not that desperate, they’re also not depleted. Enrique Hernandez isn’t dead. They also have Gavin Lux. They can move Muncy to 2b. They aren’t going to move Urias foolishly. (Although as a Red Sox fan I hope I’m wrong here. But I’m not.)

Chatham for Urias? Is that a joke? Urias is only in the pen to protect his innings, and because the Dodgers have multitudes of starting pitching. He’s a starter, and is probably as good, if not better than Buehler. Chatham is a non prospect, 24 years old, and is still in AA. No chance.

I think the Dodgers have everything… plus some in their own system and should look within first. Top prospects IF Kevin Lux and C Will Smith are hitting well while IF/OF Drew Jackson looks like a similar player that Chris Taylor is. If the pen needs help, RP-R Kevin Quackenbush is doing well in OK and has MLB experience.
